Manila May 11 The trial of Frederick J. Barrows of the Thirtieth Volunteer Infantry quartermaster for charges connected with commissary scandals closed today. Verdict not yet announced. Department forces continue expeditions against Filipino bands and expect Mindoro island occupation soon.
At the general meeting of the Royal Yacht squadron, the Marquis of Ormonde was elected commodore succeeding King Edward. The Duke of Lees was named Vice Commodore.
A bill of exceptions in the John C. Best murder trial of George E. Bailey at Saugus was filed today with the clerk of courts. The document spans 56 pages in fools cap typewritten format.
A hotel recently refurnished for the Pan American exposition in Buffalo caught fire this morning. Four persons narrowly escaped. The Bridgeburg Review plant also burned in the same incident, prompting extensive fire response.

New York May 11 R Westbrook Meyer a real estate broker shot himself yesterday morning in what is described as death by own action triggered by likely stock panic losses. Once prosperous at 59 Liberty Street he frequented H B She brokerage offices 202 Broadway. He died at Mrs Lyons 250 East 50th Street where he roomed, leaving letters to his wife and a Wall Street contact and a note to his landlady apologizing for the act.
L. D. Horne, a naturalized American and member of a St Paul wholesale firm, was forced by the Russian government to pay 350 dollars for not serving in the Russian army. To stop the confiscation of his parents northern Russia homestead, he paid the fine amid protest.
Washington reports Boston postal receipts for April at 284387, up from 254870 last year. Massachusetts city totals for two months show Lowell 11606 and 10779, Worcester 21669 and 20517, Springfield 19929 and 16909.
Boston May 11 Henry E Parsons was found not guilty of willful murder in the case of William T Hammond shot at the Charlestown playground June 18. After 11 hours deliberation the jury returned a not guilty verdict, Parsons embracing his counsel and leaving the courthouse a free man to rejoin his wife.
Sheriff Huskins called in twelve deputies to raid twelve saloons in Lewiston Maine as part of a drive to enforce the prohibitory law. Liquor was seized from several premises and stored at the county building in Auburn while more raids were planned to cover hotels and clubrooms. The sheriff pledged continued action until Lewiston is as dry as possible and promised impartial enforcement.
Cambridge May 11 Attorney General Hosea M Knowlton opened the government case in the Eastman trial calling Eastmans entire story a tissue of lies that began with a lie and ended with perjury.
London dispatch says Kitchener reports from May 5 onward 28 Boers killed, six wounded, 150 taken prisoners, and 183 surrendered. British forces captured 9000 rounds of ammunition, 280 wagons, 1300 horses, and grain stock.
Linemen employed by New England Telegraph and Telephone in Lowell and Lawrence idle after a Central division delegates vote. The plan also suggests extending the present location in Pawtucket street to junction with the up river line to ease heavy travel on the up river route.

Reports from the Presidio in San Francisco say Lowell volunteers cannot agree on a return route and will travel home in small parties. City lands and buildings committee debated granting free use of Huntington hall for three Esther cantata nights to the Y M C A and the Burkes. At the last regular meeting of the Lowell State Normal School Alumni association Hon. Geo. A. Marden assistant treasurer of the United States at Boston gave an informal talk on Money or United States currency and the treasury. Illustrations of counterfeits were shown and many facts were given on the weight and values of gold and silver coin. The talk lasted about three quarters of an hour.
The French Canadians in the city will mark St John Baptist day on the evening of June 24 with a grand ball in Huntington Hall.
