A Pittsburg Chronicle Telegraph verse lampoons a morning mower man who begins at dawn and plows the lawn all day. Neighbors complain of the racket and sleepless months as the mower repeats the cycle. The piece satirizes routine suburban toil and public grievance.
A Lowell man described as a growler runner faces danger from a stone-crusher while a drank beer from stone or pewter mugs may end up in a large Stone jug. The Telegram jokes on boat steersmen and mentions a lawyer who escaped McLean Insane asylum. A stove trust is mentioned as protecting a wide range of combines.
A selection of scattered notes covers French probate practices favoring debt payment, a medieval monastery on St Honorat never admitting women, Prussia’s suicide attempt rates, great ship depths, Panama deaths along the canal route, U S land figures, Rockall island’s remoteness, and a basalt rope described as magnetic and sea bird haunted.
Jos Harvey visited his uncle in Howard City Michigan when a quarrel with the grandmother led Robert Pearson to stab her to death. Harvey then shot his uncle, wounded and fled home where he killed his wife and wounded the three month old child before shooting his father in law and himself. The wife died with remains of her mother nearby. Pearson house shows a desperate struggle scene. Harvey surrendered to the sheriff and was arrested amid threats of lynching.
A Manila dispatch says insurgents landed 10 machine guns at Capiz, Panay. A Journal cable reports insurgents assassinated M. Dumarais, a Frenchman who crossed their lines with a flag of truce.
Hosea M Knowlton of New Bedford attorney general Massachusetts withdrew from his bid for governor citing a recalled promise made a year ago by Murray Crane. The withdrawal was reported in Boston on May 11.
The Cruiser Yosemite departed for Guam this morning under Captain Leary Governor of Guam and a garrison of marines accompanied the voyage.
Augusta Georgia May 11 The Third Nebraska Bryan's regiment was mustered out this morning. It returned home on special trains.
Eben A. Woodbury of Pelham pleaded no contest to breaking and entering and larceny in Manchester Supreme Court. Judge Young sentenced him to three years at hard labor in Concord State Prison after arguments by counsel on insanity and habitual criminality.
The court rejected a light sentence, ordering hard labor in the State prison for three years after respondent pleaded not guilty to breaking and entering the house of Sadie Pollard in Nashua and stealing $20. The prisoner accepted the sentence without flinching, smiling as he was taken away by Jailer Wadsworth.
In the afternoon session John H. Morrison moved the Newcombe v Newcombe case to non contest as alimony was agreed upon with the libellant seeking 10000 and the libellee settling 6200. The round of divorces also covered Judge v Judge with separate maintenance verdict and Duncan v Duncan involving Officer Alexander Duncan alleging habitual intoxication with witnesses heard this afternoon.
The Chelmsford sale of the late E Lincoln Russell's personal property is set for Tuesday at 9 a m with James P Emerson as auctioneer and Martin Robbins as administrator. Also on the schedule is Chelmsford lodge I O O F strawberry festival Wednesday at 7 with Westford talent and a male quartet, plus refreshments. Byfield property auction in Littleton street on Wednesday May 24 at 4 p m by George F Stiles, site a former machine shop. Central Congregational church forms a union under Rev E C Bartlett with officers named. Lend A Hand club nets $16 at recent event. Three Chelmsford Veterans die recently, including James W Patchen, 74, heart trouble, funeral at Baptist church Sunday at 2 p m with Post 185 G A R in attendance. Sunday services list Baptist and Unitarian sermons and events.
The Tyngsboro Grange No 222 installed its new officers Tuesday evening with Mr and Mrs Crosby of Tewksbury Grange conducting the ceremony. Refreshments followed the installation.
The Primitive Methodist conference met at Centre Street Church Methuen with broad interdenominational attendance. Leaders from Lowell and local pastors welcomed the assembly as a revival of Wesleyan ideals. Reports urged counteracting unwholesome literature and promoting temperance, with extensive examination results and next year’s study plans outlined.

Smoke fills the Highland boarding house at Middlesex and Branch streets as fire breaks out on the second floor. 20 to 25 boarders escape via rear fire-escape, one man descends hand over hand on a rope. Fire starts in a water closet, damages upper floor and nearby woodwork, laundry drenched. Estimated upper floor damage exceeds 100 dollars. Fred C. Church held insurance on the hotel and laundry.

The Apollo club held a May party at Prescott hall on a Wednesday evening with about 75 couples dancing to Hibbard's orchestra. Officers listed include Grand director J. W. Latham and assistant grand director Royal Reed, along with floor directors Ed Montmarquette and George Connell and reception chair Omer Turcotte with E. J. Hardy and others.
Two men driving a wagon on Suffolk Street near Broadway this morning lost control when their horses ran away. The wagon struck another vehicle, throwing both men to the ground. One man suffered severe facial and head gashes, the other an injured thigh. Officer J B Crowley aided the injured and the runaway was captured near the LaGrange and Suffolk corner.
St Anne's chapel held a 10 30 ascension day service with rector and curate officiating. Rev Dr Chambre delivered an exemplary sermon on ascension teaching. Roman Catholic churches reported usual masses and large congregations on holy day.
Clarence W Bowles faced charges for illegally selling two quarts of wine and pleaded not guilty as his case was continued until Tuesday next. Fred Lindsay admitted stealing a newspaper from E D Steele Co Prescott Street and was fined $3.
Officials state Merrimack river water is not being mixed with driven well supply. Only two driven well plants are in use while one is kept in reserve. A May 1 joke sparked the rumor. Measles epidemic continues with 111 cases in the month and several fatalities. Health inspectors expect more cases, affecting school attendance. The commons superintendent plans to replace tulips with bedded plants after bloom, not before May 20.
The residence on Princeton Street hosted a 6 30 ceremony for Alicea Lilian Tucker of Ware and Frank Roland Falls of Lawrence. Rev R A Greene officiated in an Episcopal service as guests admired palms and floral decor. The couple departed for a home in Lawrence after a luncheon with Pease's orchestra and the Page company.
Miss Minnie McKeel and Mr. Eugene Ireland wed at Mr George Shougle’s Forge Village home on a Wednesday afternoon. Rev Newbegin of Ayer officiated with Emma Burnett as bridesmaid and John Baker as best man. The couple, in white attire, received guests at a reception and left for New York to reside.
Catherine A. Rogers 36, longtime Lowell milliner born in New York, died at home 19 Rogers Street after two days illness. She worked mainly for Missa Delude and leaves sisters Mrs. William H. Quinn and Miss Rose Rogers. Mother died ten weeks earlier. Funeral from St Peter's Church at 9 AM tomorrow. Also noted Edwin M. Richards 51, of 10 SanteTlapi e, died Wednesday. survived by wife, mother, and two brothers Charles J. in Chicago and Frank P. in Somersworth.
Funeral services for John A. Ryan killed at Glastonbury Conn. were held in Sacred Heart Church with a solemn high mass led by Rev. Fr. Reynolds O M L. Deacon was Rev. Fr. Despotis Forget O M L and sub deacon Rev. Fr. Paquette O M L. Miss Adelaide A. Sullivan led the choir. Bearers were John F. Monaghan Edward McEvoy Edward Cushing Cornelius Sullivan Edward Cawley William Myers. Burial followed in the Catholic cemetery with committal services.

Captain Philip P. Powell of the Ninth U. S. Cavalry will open a recruiting station in the city on the 20th for a few days to enlist men for the cavalry artillery and infantry. Interested individuals may report to the armory for physical examination and enlistment.
Mr and Mrs David H Miller of Belvidere entertained many friends Wednesday evening for their eleventh wedding anniversary. The high school class of 1900 organized with officers Willard Morrison president Fred Russell Anna Coughlin secretary Leslie Adams treasurer Arthur Lovejoy. Harold Caverly and Grant Ford from the city were named among Amherst College freshmen contesting for the Kellogg prize in declamation. Mrs W D Freer of Hartford and Miss Glenna Paige of Detroit are current guests of Mr and Mrs A H Smith of Princeton Street.
In this city on May 10 at St. John’s Hospital, Charles F. Maguire aged 35 died. He leaves a wife and three children.
Mr. Fifield of the board of health was unavailable yesterday, leaving the timing and existence of a garbage hearing undecided. The next steps or date remain unclear as officials seek a decision.
