Rioters in Duluth Minnesota in the night attempted to blow up a West Duluth street car with dynamite. Ten passengers were bruised as the car was overturned and its trucks exploded. No arrests reported. Mobs elsewhere attacked cars and militia talk surfaced to protect company property.
Mayors of San Francisco and eight western cities including Chicago Omaha Denver St Paul Portland Los Angeles and Seattle send a cordial invitation to Admiral Dewey. They thank him for protecting western interests and note the Olympia built in their yards and western volunteers who answered his call. They invite him to return by way of San Francisco across the Pacific coast.
Major Diggles of the Thirteenth Minnesota was wounded in the head while leading a reconnoitering expedition at San Miguel in the Philippines. He is a Minneapolis resident born in Boston and a Yale Scientific School graduate of 1876, who has lived here for 18 years.
Chicago May 10 E Benjamin Andrews superintendent of schools has been tendered the presidency of the state agricultural college in Denver He has not yet accepted but will decide in two or three days The offer comes as Andrews weighs a shift from city administration to higher education leadership
Inspectors Donaldson and Goodwin arrested Clarence W. Bowles at 602 Merrimack Street for sale of intoxicating liquors. Samples of Catawba Port Sherry and Angelica were sent to State Assayer Sharpless, showing alcohol contents above native wine levels. Drugstore sales tours reveal 586 alcohol related sales in late April and 602 in early May under registration law.
The fifth district Republican Congressional committee hosted a complimentary dinner at the Parker house in Boston for Hon. Byron Truell of Lawrence, longtime committee member and current chairman, as his eight year term nears its end. Committee members listed include A G Thompson J C Wilson F I Weaver and others from various towns. Several members could not attend. Some anticipated a possible campaign boom for Truell.
A report notes that a possible bid for the Lieutenant-Governor’s office was not raised for consideration at the gathering. Authorities or organizers did not confirm any agenda item or candidate discussion related to the race.
Middlesex commissioners will finish the East Cambridge registry of deeds building after assigning contractor Thomas H. Connell. Work should restart in a week or two with new subcontracts. Connell’s total abilities are about $92,000, with assets covering roughly that amount. creditors are said to receive full payment.
Thomas Haworth of Syracuse Street fell while cleaning second story windows at 31 Talbot Street yesterday afternoon. He broke his left arm and fractured the skull, was taken by ambulance to St John’s Hospital, and at 2:30 this morning remained in critical condition with no hopes of recovery.
Judge Hardy presided over multiple uncontested matrimonial cases including Moore versus Moore granting a decree nisi and child custody. Eva M Richardson versus Charles B Richardson sought cruelty grounds with custody and $600 alimony. Anthony C C Jewett versus Frances L Jewett granted decree nisi for unfaithfulness. Ida Haskell sought divorce from Howard F Haskell on cruelty and desertion. decree nisi. The Simpson will case proceeded before Theo C Hurd. Witnesses included Henry Blaisdell, G C Saunders, George Harris, Alfred LeBlane.
Members assembled at the town hall Chelmsford Centre last evening May 9 with fatigue uniform and armed with carbine for troop drill. The guard mounting at 8 o clock was led by Lieut. E. H. Keyes officer of the day, Sergt. C. KE. Bartlett adjutant, Sergt. J. J. Monahan commander of the guard and Sergt. J. H. Wilkins sergeant major. Captain Amos R. Leighton was in charge of the drill.
A letter from Mechanicsville Saratoga County New York reports the death of Jane Williams sister of Ellen Murtaugh. Alice Levinus writes that Ellen left Mechanicsville about eight years ago and has since worked in woolen mills in Lowell. Deputy Moffatt seeks immediate information on Ellen Murtaugh’s current whereabouts and status.
The father of Edmund Carriere, killed Sunday in Middlesex street by an electric car, sues the Lowell and Suburban Street Railway company for 25000 damages. J B D Jacques is attorney for the father. The writ is returnable in the superior court the first Monday in July.
Dr Julia Morton Plummer of Boston will speak at the rooms tonight at 7 30. A most interesting and helpful meeting is promised to all who attend. All women cordially invited.
St Anne's church will hold Ascension Day services on Thursday at 10 30 a m with a sermon and holy communion.
Pleasing observance and social gathering closed the John Street Congregational church sixtieth anniversary. Rev George H Johnson greeted attendees, with reminiscences from former pastors and members, including comments on Rev S W Hanks and Rev E B Foster. Longtime members Mrs Otis L Allen and Mrs Sarah Austin noted, and past pastors listed with dates.
Iron moulders expressed confidence of victory at their first Bay State hall meeting last night. They disputed figures from Pevey Bros foundry, noting only seven of 32 strikers from that plant were actual moulders and that three shops were idle. Members cited locals avoiding lower wages and seeking $2.50 to $3.00 per day elsewhere.

By the will of E. C. Ayer filed yesterday in Cambridge the property of the deceased is left to Mrs. Ayer for life. After her death the property goes to Pentucket lodge of Free and Accepted Masons to be known as the E. C. Ayer fund for charitable purposes.
City council debates loan resolutions and sewer funding as June borrowing looms. Mayor Crowley weighs signing or vetoing a $30,000 sewer loan and the Westford street paving. He cites the need for a comprehensive sewer plan tied to water system bonds and vows to decide when loans arrive.
Luke Stevens a lightweight boxer once based in Lowell and later in Buffalo and Providence died yesterday in a Rhode Island hospital at age 19. He fought Frank Zimpher and Oscar Gardiner and had notable bouts with Kid Goulette and Billy O'Donnell, with much of his early training under Martina Flaherty.

Fr Paquette officiated at the grave with bearers Thomas McDermott Thomas Salmon Michael McDermott John McDermott James Judge Charles Quinn. J H Molloy in charge. The funeral of Mary Ellen Gary from 762 Lakeview Avenue included Mass at St Michael's Church at 9 o'clock by Rev Fr Gilday. Bearers were Michael and William Murphy John Callahan John Gallagher John Small and John Conners. J F Rogers in charge.
George I Waugh visited Northfield Vermont on May 1 to celebrate Dewey Day. He is a former University of Vermont cadet and plans to resume studies in the fall after recovering health in the Adirondacks. Meanwhile Edward Kittredge and Wilson, his San Francisco partner, visit East Merrimack Street. Joseph Lacey leaves the Belvidere hotel to work at Hogan's dispensary in Lawrence. Harry Howe retires as Y M C A general secretary. John Willmot to serve temporarily. Joseph Bailey departs for Middle Hope New York to join W D Sams Son. Daniel Fitzgerald shifts from 8 A McQuade to Daniel Conlon in Broadway Lawrence.
