Rev George H Gould a leading Congregational clergyman in New England died at his Worcester home after a prolonged illness. Born February 20 1827 in Oakham he graduated Amherst 1850 and Union Theological Seminary 1853. He served as pastor in Hartford Worcester and Union Church Worcester and married Nellie Grant in 1862. He leaves two brothers. Judge William Lawrence former US treasury comptroller and Wool Growers assoc president died at Bellefontaine Ohio. A Mt Pleasant Ohio native, he studied at Franklin College and Cincinnati Law School, served in the Ohio legislature, eight years as judge, then Congress 1865 to 1877, and became first comptroller in 1880. He authored several books.
Ezra F. Merrill, proprietor of the chutes and toboggan slides at Coney Island, died Sunday from injuries suffered last Wednesday on a slide. A reputed millionaire, he was born in Warren, New Hampshire, 74 years ago and previously worked in lumbering near Stratford and Haverhill. He leaves a wife and three sons.
Morris Basker of 43 Rogers avenue Lynn was killed instantly when he fell from a freight train on the Boston and Maine railroad about a quarter mile east of Swamp Scott depot Monday night. He was said to be stealing a ride.

The funeral of Mrs. William C. Whitney was held at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City Long Island. A special train transported about 300 mourners to the services including Mrs. W. K. Vanderbilt Jr and O. H. P. Belmont.
President McKinley and party arrived in Hot Springs Virginia and will start baths today. Mrs. McKinley and the secretary and Mrs. Gage greeted them on arrival. The trip proceeds with the president beginning treatment this day.

New York May 8 Bishop Potter received a letter from Rev Dr Decosta of St John the Evangelist. He claims a right to a hearing and charges Briggs with teaching contrary to church standards. Decosta says ordination may be postponed or omitted and that public notice is required. If pursued, charges would be brought by three presbyters after Briggs returns in the fall.

Also Joseph Eldredge Wright, 75, died Saturday May 6 after a long illness. He lived in town many years and leaves three sons Sidney B. Wright Charles H. Wright and Frank C. Wright. he is brother of George Porter Wright.

The House of Prayer narrowly escaped destruction when a forgotten candle lit the organ after evensong. The rector discovered the blaze and, alone, quelled the flames. The smallest two manual organ, insured by Fred C. Church, was under repair.
