Williamson accident: William Sheehan died after being crushed by a wheel in Roxbury. Readville pit death: William Fitt, 23, killed by a falling tree. Thos Whipple, 35, a Boston dry goods worker, shot himself in room on Washington Street while intoxicated.
Manila reports detail harder fighting in the week as Lawton led a brigade in attacks on San Rafael and Balinag. Indian tactics saved the division from heavy loss. Capt Case with a white flag attempted to warn noncombatants at Balinag. Young's scouts drove 300 Filipinos after a 23-man force. Two thousand Spanish prisoners at San Miguel suffer rice rations and hard labor. Lawton released many prisoners.

Washington May 5. Otis cables casualties at San Tomas yesterday. Lieut. Toggart of the Twentieth Kansas was killed, and four men, three officers and 22 enlisted men were wounded.
New York May 5 A Journal cablegram reports Americans captured San Fernandino Aguinaldo s stronghold and insurgents were driven back in confusion as the town fell under allied control.
Judge McMaster of Indianapolis orders the Order of the Iron Hall receiver to pay a final dividend of one-fifth of one percent. The distribution closes a seven year receivership involving $2,000,000 with 63,000 members. 45,000 proved claims and total dividends at 35 1 5 percent.
The death notices honor Major Cephas Brackett of Littleton, oldest regional stage driver, born 1816, who began driving at 17 and served in militia roles. Also noted is Rev. Dr. Samuel H. Kellogg of Pittsburg, a renowned theologian who died suddenly in Landour, India, while aiding Bible translation. Kellogg, born 1839 on Long Island, attended Princeton, taught mathematics there, and became a prominent church leader.
Lawrence May 5 A public reception and banquet honored Lawrence soldiers of the Spanish American War. Over 500 seated at the armory banquet under the Young Men’s Catholic Association with city officials and prominent citizens attending. Notables spoke including Mayor James H. Eaton Congressman William S. Knox and officers from Company L and Company F.
Governor Roosevelt refused a pardon for Henry Hendricks of Alleghany county serving life at Auburn for wife murder. Hendricks, about 60, shot his wife over a rival, shot himself, and burned his thumb. Jurors previously stood 11 to 1 for first degree murder. The governor warned mercy won’t come for wife beaters and child abusers.
No arrests yesterday. Catherine Connors was fined $8 for assault on C. J. Durkin. Virginia Poirier, 12, was sent to Lancaster for larceny. Maurice Rogers, a boy, was sent to the Lyman school for larceny of 16 cents.
In Lowell superior court Judge Bond presided over Crane vs Riley a breach of promise case drawing about 300 spectators. A Boston syndicate led by Tucker Anthony and E Rollins Morse plans to form a trust to acquire capital stocks of about four miles of street railways in northeastern and southeastern Massachusetts. The new association will issue about $10 million in preferred and $10 million in common stock, no bonds, with public subscription. It will consolidate management across lines, extend from Boston to Haverhill Newburyport and to Providence Fall River, retire debt, fund improvements, and seek tax-free status. In Lawrence police court eight intoxicated individuals faced charges Thursday morning, all pleaded guilty. Two hailed from Lowell. Judge Stone resumed his routine questioning of Lowell drinkers, asking the men their purpose for coming. Thomas Ryan claimed business but could not specify it. Patrick Hogan joked his reason was pleasure. Each offender was fined one dollar.
Robert O Grady a Boott mills spinner appeared in the district court at Woonsocket to answer an assault charge against George W Cumnock superintendent of Social and Nourse mills. O Grady said he struck in self defence after a dispute over a torn bill and he received nine days in Providence county jail.
Early Friday evening a man was seen near 88 Chardon street and a lodger James Toland reported missing clothing and jewelry while watches and rings vanished from other lodgers. Sergt Hagan and Patrolman Carbee detained a suspect at Prospect and Merrimack, who Toland identified, noting the man wore Toland’s trousers. He claimed the name James Murphy and said he lived in the city, and was jailed at Joy Street.
