At the Paris exposition of 1900 a gigantic umbrella is proposed with a 140 meter diameter top cover and a 40 meter diameter handle, four stories of concert bars and restaurants, and electric lamps. A colossal telescope progress is also reported, with a 70 yard steel tube and 21 000 kilogram weight, eight cast iron supports, and a nearly finished siderostat. Rats are being fed in the Central meat market, London, with tame behavior noted as crowds observe.
Lawrence citizens note a Friday armory banquet marking the departure anniversary of Company L Eighth Regiment with about 30 guests and many ladies. Burglars blew a large safe in the office of Gregory Shaw & Co. shoe manufacturers in South Framingham but did not take any money. The office was left a complete wreck and the watchman heard nothing as the robbers escaped shortly after.
London May 6 Andrew Carnegie announced he has given his young partners terms on which he is willing to sell and retire after the report of transferring his United States business interests to a syndicate. He believes they will buy.
Dewey cables that the Bennington ran aground on a shoal north of Panay Island in the Philippine group. She came off after about 23 hours with no serious damage and will be docked and sent to Hong Kong. No blame is attached to anyone.

A large audience attended Associate hall for a Day Nursery festival night featuring a 150 voice chorus and many solo and group numbers including piano solos, recitations, dances, and songs performed by children and young performers. The event closed with a promenade concert by the Lowel Military band and a High School regiment prize drill followed by dancing from 9 to 10 30.
Winners in the afternoon whist tournament are Mrs. R. H. Walker and Mrs. Hermon J. Smith first. Mrs. Henry B. Perkins and Miss Mary Russell second. Mrs. Thomas Allen and Mrs. B. E. Steele third. consolation goes to Mrs. C. M. Dickey and Miss Dickey. Gifts from donors were used as second and third prizes. Mrs. Buckland led the event with assistances from Miss Stella Cheney and a committee including Mrs. George Bowers, Mrs. Fred Bennett, Mrs. Leroy Turner and Mrs. E. D. Steele.
The state W C T U will hold a peace meeting in Tremont Temple Boston on May 9 from 12 to 1 o clock under President Stevenson. Mrs Mary A Livermore and other noted speakers will address the gathering. Low ell union members are urged to attend and all interested are urged to be present.

In police court Judge Hadley heard two drunken cases this morning. James Breen, of Lowell, recently in Waltham, was released on a $1 payment. Bridget McSorley pleaded guilty and received 20 days in the workhouse. Thorpe, an idle and disorderly person and bartender linked to a city raid, had his case placed on file after arrest in Boston. William Vierra, door keeper at a Portuguese society meeting in French's hall, was found guilty of assaulting Antonio Silva and fined $14.50 for blocking the exit and striking Silva after a dispute over leaving time.
A fire at Jeremiah Ryan’s house on 779 Westford Street damaged the attic where moths were being disposed of with sulphur. Water used by firefighters worsened losses as roof slate and shingles required removal. Furniture mostly saved by rubber blankets though roof and furnishings may lose value. total loss could reach 1000 dollars.
The Dracut board unanimously votes to appoint Lowell Lawrence and Haverhill street conductors and motormen running between Lowell and Lawrence as special policemen with power to arrest intoxicated passengers along the railway within Dracut limits.
