Noted English born actor Nelson Wheatcroft died of pneumonia at his New York home after a week of illness. Born in 1852, he caught a cold during rehearsals of Spiritisme and appeared opening night at the Knickerbocker last Monday. He long served with the Lyceum company and later the Empire Stock. His widow on stage is Adeline Stanhope.
An inward bound car on the Billeri ca line yesterday jumped the track on Dwyer's hill. It skated down a frozen embankment and bowled along for about two rods through a board fence into an apple orchard. The ground was frozen and the car stayed upright. It required a dozen horses to pull the car back onto the track. Passengers were frightened but none injured.
A mine operated by the Kansas & Texas coal company in Huntington Arkansas suffered a deadly explosion last night. After the blast one man was killed and 34 people were injured, with some reportedly fatally wounded. Rescue and investigation crews arrived to assess the scene and assist workers.
The Essex Institute of Salem has received locks of hair from Daniel Webster and Zachary Taylor for its collection, along with hair from General Taylor's war horse. In Boston, laborer William H. Coughlan, 51, died when an embankment collapsed while excavating a cellar for the new Times Building. Near Attleboro a fast passenger train struck two men, allegedly Albert a Mills and Albert H. Clemens, killing them.
Salem reports a tragic incident as two year old John Bertram pulled a lamp from a table late last night and sustained fatal burns. The unit fire department responded swiftly but could not save the child.

Frankfort Kentucky March 5 Governor Bradley appoints Major A T Wood to fill the United States Senate seat left by Blackburn. The move elevates Wood to a national post replacing the retiring senator.
Greenfield March 4 The Franklin grand jury finished its session and filed an indictment charging John O Neil Jr with murder in the Mrs McCloud case.

Miss Grace Carll celebrated her birthday last evening at William Harriman house in Chelmsford street with about 20 children. Grace Carll, Warren Cornock, Engrid Monson, Edith Cornock, and Loyola McCann performed songs dances readings and piano solos before refreshments. Everyone left in good humor.

Empire colony received a prize from the Supreme Governor J Albion Briggs for high member percentage in 1896. Veritas lodge initiated a candidate while Merrimack Valley lodge added members and K P Grand Instructor Foss visited Lowell.
Funeral services for Mary E Ridley were held at the family home on North street with burial in the Catholic cemetery. Annie Lovejoy Paul’s funeral was at the First Universalist church with burial in Lowell cemetery. Charles A Stott oversaw arrangements. bearers included Harry Newell and others. music by Wirt Barrell. undertakers C H Molloy and J B Currie directed the processions.
