Washington June 21 Senator Clay of Georgia urged Democrats to drop all taint of Populism to win in 1904. He said the party must gain business support, secure key states, and nominate a candidate acceptable to conservative interests. He warned against sacrificing principles and sought a broad, liberal platform.
Irving Abrams, a noted bicycle rider in Nyack New York, died after speeding down a steep hill and plunging from an open drawbridge over a Grassy Point creek. He and his bicycle landed about 20 feet into the water, his body recovered half an hour later.
The Traders National Bank provides foreign exchange letters of credit and travelers cheques. It advertises savings with 4 percent interest compounded semi annually, and offers safety deposit boxes. A statue near the altar was struck while two couples stood nearby. Priests kept worshippers calm and prevented a stampede. Damages run into thousands of dollars.
Aden dispatch reports Mad Mullah repulsed by Capt. McNeill near Zaerba then encountered a British cavalry and mounted infantry force that routed his men. About a hundred of the enemy were killed, the Sultan of Nur narrowly escaped capture, and British casualties numbered seven killed or wounded.
Nashua New Hampshire June 22 Rev Michael Burns a retired Roman Catholic pastor died of heart disease at 65. He founded the Sisters of the Sacred Heart home and recently offered to double funds raised for a new church edifice, noted for his generosity.
Paterson New Jersey reports that gangs scoured the Main Street ruin after yesterday's fireworks explosion. By noon today thirteen bodies had been recovered and the head of another remains to be identified.
London June 22 Earl Russell committed for trial at Bow Street charged with bigamy and held in £2000. He is married in Nevada to Mrs Somerville who attended court. As a peer he must be tried by the House of Lords.
A ship sailing seven days from Liverpool suffered a machinery failure and drifted until the British steamer Inishowen Head located her 800 miles from Ireland on June 15. Inishowen Head towed the vessel from June 16 until yesterday, securing safe passage.
Chicago June 22 George S Lawrence famed balloon photographer fell 250 feet while filming from a captive balloon above the stockyards. He dangled on telegraph wires, landed unharmed and walked away, vowing to replace the $1200 lost balloon. Spectators endured awe and terror as the apparatus broke free and the netting snagged the wires. Lawrence plans to resume work Monday if a new balloon arrives.
A mysterious malady has hit horses across New York City since last Saturday, affecting more than 10,000 horses and spreading rapidly. Supt Hankinson of the SPCA warns the condition could force oxen to pull vehicles if unchecked. symptoms resemble a grip, with lassitude, cold, and high fever, affecting horses of all stables and stations.
North Adams June 22 Salem Thayer of Readsboro Vermont aged 73 suffered a fractured right knee when a swinging staging rope shifted, throwing John Bascom from the staging about 20 feet. Bascom escaped serious injury and continued work. Thayer was hospitalized with the leg fracture.
A western donor, unnamed, placed one million dollars in a Denver bank under the Rockefeller Carnegie endowment scheme to found People's churches across the country inspired by Dr H W Thomas.
Chicago June 22 Everything is in readiness for the running races of the American Derby at Washington Park this afternoon. Eleven horses are announced as sure to go to the post. His Eminence Bonnibert and the Parader are the favorites.
Primo Ponti, in Boston to visit a sick friend, was arrested on a Dayton, Ohio shooting charge from two years ago. Nicola Masculi, the alleged victim, had undergone surgery to remove a bullet from the abdomen and identified Ponti as the shooter during his hospital stay.
A Pekin dispatch reports an official proclamation stating the Emperor will return to Pekin in October by railroad from Pao Ting Fu. The plan signals a formal reentry as Beijing prepares for the imperial arrival and related ceremonies.
At a special meeting June 22 the Concord and Montreal company renewed its petition for a location and layout of its electric line. Conditions satisfactory to the city and the railroad were agreed, and the location was granted, guaranteeing construction of an electric road from Manchester to Concord this season.
Queenstown reports the Furness-Allan liner Ulunda captained by Chambers, en route from Liverpool to St. John's and Halifax since June 4, towed into an anchorage after being reported 15 days out from St. John's on June 19, with rescue or condition not detailed.

Molly Varnum chapter of the D A R held a meeting at Regent Mrs H M Thompson s home. They discussed a new Lowell chapter formed without Lowell D A R input and chose not to protest. The chapter received a Massachusetts gift set Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolution for Memorial hall and will loan it to members.
Old Bay State Chapter D A R met at Miss Bernice Jewett’s Willow Dale summer residence yesterday. Delegates elected for the North Adams State Conference on Oct 2 include Miss May Stevens as delegate and Miss Bernice Ranlett as regent’s alternate. Jewett named as alternate for the delegate. After business, a luncheon was served, music and phonograph selections enjoyed, ending with a lake ride. Attendance was large and regarded as one of the chapter’s most enjoyable meetings.
Clarence H. Rollins aged 21 from Bangor Missouri was instantly killed at the General Electric company works while taking an electrical engineering course. He climbed on a platform near high potential transformers and, while descending, touched wires carrying up to 8000 volts. He fell, death was instantaneous, despite insulated wires, as the high potential rendered insulation ineffective.
A stowaway named Gunn, aboard the steamer Virginian from Liverpool, attempted to swim to shore as the vessel neared departure. He shed his clothes, tied them to a leg, and jumped into Black Rock channel but sank in the strong current. Rescue efforts failed.
State police reject reward idea and defer to Boston authorities in the Blondin murder case. Chief Wade, Captain Rhoades, and Boston police will lead the effort with state support. a leak undermined the pursuit and Blondin remains at large.
About nine o clock during a thunder storm lightning struck John E. Hogans house on Gay street North Chelmsford causing damage to two rooms. The strike entered likely through the chimney and ripped plaster and upended furniture while Mrs Hogan and her two year old child were unharmed. Nearby the 75 foot chimney of Geo C Moores mill at Brookside was struck leaving a two inch gash along the stack and possible rebuilding needed for the upper section.
Diphtheria remains high with 24 cases this week though prompt treatment limits fatalities. Chambers street macadamizing finished and Whipple street slated for completion next week. Perry street work to follow. City lodge employs 24 men currently.

In Pawtucket police court this morning John Mathews and John Moval faced illegal fishing charges after a 20 fish haul found in the fish-way at the Pawtucket dam. Judge Hadley imposed $50 fines. six milk dealers were arraigned for milk law violations. The Kid Mulligan was fined $100 for illegal liquor sale. Other defendants faced drunk ness, non support, adultery and jail terms.
Boston and Maine brakeman Arthur Jean aged about 27 was struck and killed at 1 30 this morning on the Western avenue track as shifter 316 arrived. He stepped from the rear of freight 241 from Boston, his body cut in two and mangled. He lived at 21 Tremont street and left a life insurance policy with the Boston and Maine Relief Association.
The Young Women's Christian Association holds its annual meeting next Saturday evening June 29 at 7 30 for officer elections and business. All members are invited and a social follows for all girls.
The Lowell Primary union for Sunday school teachers will hold its meeting today at the home of Mr. G. L. Huntoon on Gorham Street near the city line.
The Lowell Board of Trade filed with the city clerk a petition urging the council to commission a competent lawyer to prepare a clear draft of the 1875 charter and amendments. The draft would unify the charter with statutes and decisions, aiding voters in understanding future changes, with a pamphlet copy to be provided to all qualified voters. Adopted June 18 1901.
Lowell council and Royal Arcanum held a large Thursday meeting with nine membership applications and four initiations. A $250 transfer from the general fund was approved, several officers changed, and a Salem Willows union outing planned for Saturday. Pilgrim commandery rehearsed St John’s day events with 200 knights expected from Lowell and nearby.
