The Hogg brothers retire, stockholders share the sale proceeds, and Whitall’s plant joins his Palmer mill in Wilton and Worcester operations to end local competition.
Buffalo June 14 Patriotism marked the Pan-American exposition with tributes to the flag. The event was hosted by the D A R the G A R and other societies. Mrs Charles W Fairbanks president general D A R spoke. Lieut Gen Miles received hearty applause and Capt Richmond P Hobson naval representative drew a strong demonstration. Hobson praised the army and Gen Miles and reviewed the navy from its origins to the Spanish American war.
The Holyoke paper makers strike is officially called off. The city hall bell rang to signal news as both sides concede. Tour workers approved the grievance committee's agreement at a mass meeting. Mills resume Monday with a new schedule starting July. Stationary firemen meet tomorrow with expected favorable results. The pact caps tour workers at 66 hours per week.
Springfield June 15. City Marshal Stebbins received a Boston dispatch seeking Wilfred Blondin for the murder of his wife in Lowell or Boston. The baggage list showed several trunks and a bicycle matching Blondin’s description left Boston, though the bike did not arrive here and was claimed elsewhere. Police suspect Blondin rode to Worcester then continued by train, reclaiming his bicycle later.
A discrepancy arises between the baggage car’s Worcester arrival and the Boston departure times. The trunk and bicycle reached Worcester on a later train, suggesting Blondin may not have taken the earlier 8 o clock train, offsetting the conflicting dates.
Judge Hadley spoke at the morning police court session on the sudden death of Superintendent George R. Davis, praising his official ability and kindness. Pilgrim Commandery of Laconia New Hampshire plans a big parade in Lowell on Monday June 24 at Mountain Rock grove. About 300 Knights are expected to participate with a special train leaving Laconia at 7 80 a m. Local Sir Knights in Lowell or visiting are invited to join and tickets are selling rapidly.
An undenominational meeting is announced for Stearns's grove near Golden Cove tomorrow at 3 PM weather permitting. Rev Johnson leads, with chorus singing by Mr Noble Charlton and soloist Mr Alexander of North Billerica. G T Parkhurst plays cornet. rehearsal starts at 2 30 PM. invitees urged to bring friends.
A Friday evening birthday gathering for Miss Maxwell was held at the Lowell hospital. Miss Adams presided as games ended with a floral contest won by Miss Cheney who received a pearl stick pin set. Miss Thornton took second with an opal pin, and Miss McCord third. Fudge peanuts ice cream and cake were served. Miss Maxwell received a watch chain.
The new home of Wm. G. Hayes on Fairmount street opened last night to friends who called to congratulate him on the tenth wedding anniversary. A suit of parlor furniture was presented. Hayes is a popular employee of the Massachusetts cotton mills.
