The United Labor league backs 3000 seamstresses mainly soldiers wives widows and daughters who say government contracts deprive them of livelihoods. They claim the contract work is done in filthy sweat shops and urge the President to halt new clothing contracts and have the women work at the arsenal.
Funeral for Capt. Henry Nichols of the Monadnock was held at Cavite with naval honors. He died of sunstroke after months of active service as the fleet aimed to seize Paranaque and secure occupation by American forces. Officers of the fleet attended. His ship had faced continual fire.
Tacoma June 12 Gen King recently back from the Philippines was overcome by exhaustion while giving a speech to a serenading band. He was carried inside and must cancel engagements though the stroke is not serious.
The General Butler Veteran Firemen association, in full uniform, held services at Catholic and Edson cemeteries for four deceased members: John J. Ball, Joseph Purcell, John J. Mealey, and William S. Knapp. Flowers were laid on each grave as a decoration.
A friendly match between Newton Centre club and Vesper Country club was played at Tyng Island. The Vespers won by 8 holes. Wadsworth scored well despite Grover’s form, Bean Allen match was close, and Ramsey beat Wilkie with a 86 medal score. The Long Meadow Golf club held a handicap medal tournament, Rev. C W Huntington winning with net 55.
The United States Bunting and Lawrence Cricket clubs played a draw on Wigginville grounds Saturday afternoon. Mohair Cricket club defeated East Boston 56 to 2 on Chelmsford Street grounds Saturday.
Freight handlers on the railroad docks in Buffalo quit work in sympathy with Erie and Lackawanna dock workers. Little work is done on the docks as leaders oppose the strike.
A second body section was recovered in the upper bay on June 12 matching parts from a dismembered body found Saturday. The man is described as having a sandy moustache.
The Lowell Veteran Firemen's Association decorated graves at Lowell and Edson cemeteries and others in Salem Rochester Windham and Tewksbury Centre. Memorial exercises at Grace Universalist Church featured hymns invocations and readings with a roll of the dead including John H. Conklin Alvine Thompson James A. Pierce John F. Williams and others.
Lawrence police report an unprecedented surge in arrests with 59 offenders held since Saturday. Most charged with drunkenness and 24 residents from Lowell. A large exodus from Lowell required extended patrols and an extra patrol wagon to maintain order on main streets.
Supt. Gillow stated there have been no changes to the school janitors list and none are planned in the near future. He added no significant changes have been made in the department since he assumed charge.
Referee Charles B Barnes held a brief bankruptcy session at the courthouse this morning. In Demers, Fay was named trustee by creditors. Donovan named trustee in Chochos case and Burns in Renwick case. Fay represented petitioners. Carr case continued to July 18. Merchants National Bank designated United States depository for bankrupt estate funds.
Letters note Lowell no longer a license town and compare to Lawrence where the majority favors license. Lowell voted for no license last year but it is not a true temperance victory. Lowell papers say law is being enforced there thus far.
Rev Charles E Spaulding formerly pastor of Grace church Springfield is a Lowell native born in 1864. He attended Lowell High School class of 1882, then Wesleyan University earning A B in 1888 and S T B from Boston University Theological School. He received an A M from Wesleyan in 1890 and served in West Chelmsford from 1886 to 1888.
Joseph Macey of Providence Rhode Island, seeking work in Lowell, collapsed in the round house at Howard and Chelmsford streets from illness. An ambulance carried him to St John’s hospital where doctors diagnosed fever as the cause.

Voices of the little ones filled the church as children in white gowns gathered flowers and diplomas on a dedicated Children’s Day. Songs recitations and messages of love marked the observance, with well wishes for absent relatives.
At John Street Church a 27 child chorus performed with floral framing from the Young People’s society. Mary Wing and Elizabeth Blandin guided the younger class, with welcome by Helen Johnson and others. The Ayer Home sent five children in a Bible themed program, a baptism was given to Thyran Bennett Curtis, and each child received a potted plant.
More than 400 children attended a Children's Day service at the First Congregational church on Sunday despite illness keeping some home. The event featured a plant-decorated pulpit, a student-led program, baptism of one child, and plant distribution to attendees after the sermon.

The Children s day service at Kirk Street church featured laurel blooms and daisies adorning the platform. The primary department led with songs and recitations including a memory scripture by Willie and Doris Bartlett. Three children were baptized and Rev. Bartlett gave an illustrated talk with plants presented to the children.
Children’s day observance featured a morning service with the Sunday school children taking prominent roles in responses and singing. Rev. Mr. Huntington delivered a sermon to the children from the text One Thing Thou Lackest. Diplomas were awarded to primary to intermediate department promotes: Clarence Fairburn, Arthur Booth, Frank Bennett, George Morse, Russell Dana, Joseph Barry, Samuel Chase, Lawrence Jackson, Rossie Wirt, Joseph Gilchrist, Mary Wheeler, Pauline Coggeshall, Alice Bentley, Ethel Bullis, Mera Thornton, Mildred Boulser, Elizabeth Wilder, Sarah Fielding. Potted plants were given to each child. decorations were green and white. Mrs. F. EB. Burtt, with Miss Edith Marshall and Master Chester Conant, led the arrangements.
The church held a large Children’s Sunday with a decorated auditorium, a crowded choir loft, and a program of songs and recitations led by Mrs. George F. Kenngett. Many children took part in solos and recitations, four dozen received special roles, and fourteen were baptized along with twelve young people joining the church. The Sunday school set a record attendance of 6380, as each child in the processional received a potted plant.
A Paige Street morning program marked the annual promotion from lower to higher departments with Rev A E Wilson awarding diplomas after remarks. A large crowd witnessed June flower decor, choir singing, and a cradle roll reception with diplomas presented to many students across primary, junior, and intermediate classes.
Morning service honored Children’s Day with seating on the floor for young attendees and floral altar decorations. The program featured singing, readings, and exercises by children, highlighting kindergarten to main school graduation, with potted plants presented to the primary department by Superintendent H. L. Tibbetts.
Rev S T Ford of First Baptist preached Sunday evening on A Religious Potpourri from the text Thou hast the words of eternal life. The subject was suggested by a convention of free religious thinkers held at Hollis street theatre Boston. Continued on Page Six.
The Middlesex county grand jury reported at East Cambridge with Judge Bond on the bench. They returned true bills against numerous individuals for breaking and entering larceny robbery and related charges with many named defendants from Somerville Malden Lowell Cambridge and other towns. Burial services for Michael Connell were held at Immaculate Conception Church with Holy Name society delegation and interment in the Catholic cemetery.
The jury found no bill against Eugene Oliver and Igna tius Bagdasarian for assaults with dangerous weapons, and against Leon 1. Merrill for breaking and entering and larceny, plus Byron Fader and Arthur W. Higgins for respective offenses. Mrs Blennerhassett faced no bill after shooting at a presumed burglar. Several pleaded guilty, including John Hillson Edward Hines Benjamin Walker Eli P Leblanc Manuel Oliver and John Kelley, two insane persons. Walter J Mower of Somerville was committed to Worcester asylum and Anna L Robart to Danvers after mental breakdowns.
Mrs Frances C Fisher died yesterday morning at her son Rev C H Fisher 165 Branch St Lowell aged 67 She had lived in Lowell a little over a year after a long life in Provincetown where she raised her family Survived by son and daughter Rev E Fisher of the First Universalist Church Brockton wife and two daughters including Mrs Mayo of Brockton Ex Councilman Joseph F O Rourke died this morning at 34 years He served in 1892 Ward One councilor and leaves three brothers five sisters and several in Brewers union Samuel W Burford died at 60 with widow one son and a married daughter in Minnesota.
The funeral of Albert Barrington who died suddenly at his home in North Billerica occurred Saturday at 2 pm from the Baptist church. Rev. Knowles officiated with pallbearers Archibald Ritchie Richard Perry James Sutcliffe and Lerbert Ellis. A quartet sang and Thomas Bateson played the organ. Barrington, 80 years old, a Swinton England native, lived in Billerica 17 years and left a wife, two daughters, and his parents. He worked in the Talbot mills spinning department. Members of North Billerica council and Royal Arcanum attended.
A family reunion marks Mrs Ann Page s 81st birthday at 626 Rogers street with four generations present including her son D L Page three grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Also covered are public notices of local figures travels and engagements with multiple names and dates.

A Sunday morning alarm sent engine 56 to the boulevard where a lively fire burned, reportedly started by men smoking pipes. George B. Evans of Rice and Evans in Boston has been named a Ludington water works appraiser and departed for Michigan for the task. Michael Kelley and Fred Lovejoy of Lowell pleaded guilty to larceny in Nashua police court and are held in $500 bonds for the September term of the supreme court for allegedly stealing $60 from Martin Van Buren Thompson�s house.
