Shelter and feeding mix boost profits for dairy and other stock
W A Hart urged the National Berkshire association on practical feeding and housing. He cited shelter increasing dairy cow profit by about ten cents daily, and shelter reducing pig feed needs by around one quarter. He noted soaked corn boosts pig gains about 25 percent and cattle 20 percent, while pigs grazing with cattle save about five bushels per 100. Cooked feeds hurt gains and health except potatoes, salt daily raises feed efficiency, wood ashes or bone meal lessen corn needs, ground corn saves only 8 percent for pigs, and wet ground feed raises pigs 7 percent over dry. Dam feeding matches direct young growth, corn alone is cheapest lamb ration, ripe corn has more nutriment, and forage nutrients rise with maturity while wetting reduces efficiency.
