Stockholm July 23 An explosion aboard the American schooner Louise Adelaide in the harbor caused the deaths of Captain Orr and ten crew members, along with four Swedish customs officials and a Brazilian consul. The schooner was set afire and blazing petroleum spread the flames. two crewmen were rescued.
The report states two women, alleged to have been on the wrong side of the road, will be summoned as witnesses. A 17 year old boy, a student at South Lancaster academy, was working during the vacation and his family was notified.
A 443 train from Boston to Whitington narrowly avoided derailment at the Abington overhead bridge after a high feed wire snapped its guy ropes. The cable tore parts of a house roof and telegraph lines, toppled a tree, and injured a lineman before the locomotive sustained damage. no fatalities occurred and telephone service was restored later.
Winnipeg reports Beaudette Manitoba ruled by lawless crowd as workers on the Canadian Northern bridge flee to Beaver Mills. Saloons run wide open and no municipal or police authority. Sheriff and marshal in town, warrants served, many toughs fled. Bridge work halted until order returns.
Victoria July 23 The Nell’s master reports seeing a large two masted passenger steamer, possibly American, afire ten days earlier below Port Simpson. She drifted toward Dundas Island with smoke towering above the masts, hull obscured by steam, then vanished as if making for shore.
Manila reports that Adjt. Gen. Corbin and Gen. Chaffee plan sweeping reforms in the Philippines Army. The total cost of maintaining US forces could drop by 60 percent in a year, with forces cut to 20 000 to 30 000 men and districts abolished. Three brigades will be stationed at Manila Dagupan and Iloilo or Cebu as core posts.
Much gossip arose in London on July 23 after American ladies presented a hospital ship Maine medal to King Edward with a request to pass it to Queen Alexandra. Several influential committee members oppose the gesture saying the King did not want the medal.

New York reports five suicides yesterday amid hot weather. Five individuals reportedly ended their lives as investigators note a rise in personal crisis reports during the heat spell.
New York July 23. George Lederer theatrical manager sues for absolute divorce after winning child custody with legal aid. Mrs Lederer files for separation and requests alimony and Maitland aged five. Co-respondents named later. Mrs Lederer, formerly Adele Rice, alleges unkind and cruel treatment. The child remains in court custody.
Washington July 23 1901 the comptroller of the currency has issued a call for the condition of the national banks as on Monday July 15 1901 The agency requires banks to report their capital surplus undivided profits and resources to assess stability and compliance nationwide.
Ralph Wheeler of East Wakefield New Hampshire died after a bicycle collision with a carriage on the South Lancaster boulevard. A shaft struck him in the left breast breaking two ribs and piercing the heart. Death was instantaneous and an inquest was ordered. Dr G L Tobey noted Wheeler did not seem to feel the impact. The body was moved to the Seventh Day Adventists sanitarium and later to a local undertaker.
An officer of the trades and labor council states there will be no strike at the brewery over the ice freezer dispute. The statement signals a pause in labor action and outlines avoidance of industrial disruption at the facility.

Otis W. Newhall an 82 year old former sea captain jumped into the Lynn and Boston steamboat wharf water to save Arthur Green a six year old boy who had fallen in. Newhall held the child above the surface until others pulled both to safety. Arthur regained consciousness after artificial respiration and is recovering at the hotel.
Peter Kelly was found not guilty of assault on Officer McCloughry and discharged after a contested alibi. Judge Pickman doubted Flemings's statement, but accepted Jos Garity as another witness. Mrs. Fannie W Mills aged 78 a lifelong Dracut resident died Monday night at her Willow Dale Road home. She was the wife of Robert Mills and daughter of Peter and Mary Coburn. Mrs Mills was born near the house where she passed away.
Springfield reports Receiver Ellis B. Pepper says shrinkage in Pynchon National bank securities will total about 196000 dollars, nearly wiping out capital stock. Depositors are expected to be paid in full, but reorganization for continuance seems unlikely.
Fall River Globe reports the Fall River Daily Globe Publishing Company secured clear title to a central 4567 square feet parcel from James H. Chase of Providence and Jonathan Chase of Central Falls Rhode Island for 50000 dollars. The firm plans a new modern newspaper plant on the site.
W S Fenn of Bristol Connecticut won the international five mile pursuit at the Velodrome before 1000 spectators. Gascoyne of England fell behind from the start and was passed within the eighth lap as the two and two thirds mile race concluded in five minutes and six seconds.

The mayor city engineer city solicitor and Boston and Northern Street Railway official plan a conference at city hall this afternoon about the rights of the company in the old right of way granted to the Lowell and Suburban company to lay tracks across Moody street bridge. A new Pawtucketville line is proposed. Both branches of the city council meet tonight and a revived public bathing house may be considered.
A morning blaze reported from box 216 at Lawrence and Abbott streets damaged the roof of a two and a half story dwelling owned by George Green and occupied by the families of William Barrel and William Corcoran in Joiner's court on Lawrence Street. Sparks from a chimney started the fire, with damage estimated at about $50.

In Fitchburg police court Frank B. Cherrier faced two wives on a bigamy charge and was held in 1000 for the superior court next month. First wife Nettie J. Clark of Ashburnham, wed Feb 22 1898, they lived together three years and remain married. Second wife Margaret W. Cherrier wed Aug 30 1899, she lived with him until about two months ago when she learned of the other marriage.
Philadelphia July 23 United States Commissioner Craig held Capt Jacob Swain of the steamer Benefactor in 1000 bail for trial on manslaughter in the drowning of Francis Fisher a prominent society man of the city The yacht Spalpeen of the Corinthian Yacht club fleet was run down near Sea Girt on July 13 and Swain is charged with refusing to lower a boat to aid the yachting party leaving Fisher dead.
Weymouth July 23 Frank Tirrell aged 16 son of Mr. and Mrs. Barton B Tirrell died today from lockjaw caused by injuries after falling from a tree several days earlier.
