The Pawtucket city council elected Avery J. Marshall superintendent of commons amid votes on several sewer loans and a $55,000 paving order. The body approved $27,500 for Meadowcroft and related sewers, $5,400 for Crescent area sewers, and passed the acting superintendent’s pay, while delaying reconsideration of the $55,000 loan. Marshall, a gardener by trade and nine-year veteran, is a Democrat who will serve with the Republican council.

The system spans about 400 miles across northeastern Massachusetts and part of southern New Hampshire with plans to add a Melrose to subway route for a 5 cent fare and direct Lowell to Boston service. Cars will carry only the new system names as old company names are phased out.
Constable Gately arrested John Phillippe a Pole in Westfield yesterday afternoon after he reportedly skipped the three month jail sentence for drunkenness. Phillippe had appealed and obtained bond but disappeared from Lowell, claiming he planned to appear at the superior court trial date.
