C H Hanson & Co will sell at public auction on Tuesday July 25 all tools and appliances formerly used by L F Kittredge & Son general contractors. Sale by order of Co O Davis trustee and is positive. Rare opportunity for buyers as everything is in first class condition and must be sold.
The Universalist Summer Meet at Saratoga runs July 25 to August 27 with round trip Fitchburg Railroad tickets from Boston at $6.00. Departures July 29 to August 5, train leaves Boston 11:00 a.m., arrives Saratoga 5:00 p.m., races begin July 25 and continue through August 27.
New York July 22 reports Brooklyn strike ended with schedules restored and maintained. Police remain on cars though overt acts ceased. Manhattan strike resolved with most officers released and trains running on schedule. Nearly twenty workers who struck but did not join demonstrations returned to work.
Passengers aboard the Brunswick report a man travels from Kotzebue sound to Washington for about 1000 stranded miners. They urge government aid with revenue cutters to avert loss of life. Twelve hundred miners went seeking gold. two hundred reached here, others await return while many are sick.
Chief Surgeon Woodhull urges 40 more surgeons for the Philippines to handle rising sick rates. Otis rejects the plan. About 3000 sick are in Manila area hospitals and quarters, with 1800 listed last week and hundreds elsewhere. Many on duty are unfit for service.
Park House at Nantasket struck by lightning at midnight on July 22. Guests narrowly escaped as fire wrecked the Nantasket Beach property. Loss put at 30000 dollars.
Washington July 22 The President has tendered Elihu Root of New York the secretaryship of war Root has accepted and will assume the post.
Maggie McCall, 17, living near Norans hotel in Greece, was brutally beaten by her father Nathan McCall who objected to her engagement with James Parsons. The intoxicated man fled after packing a bag. Maggie lay unconscious from head and body injuries with possible internal damage. her mother urged the meeting despite the attack.
Rain halted Detroit racing after three heats were run at Grosse Pointe contingent on a postponed two days’ program. The unfinished 2.15 pacing race and a Chamber of Commerce Consolation heat were completed as spectators watched two days’ races packed into one day. Hontas Crooke led early while Nerva Patchen trailed Wiltranby before home stretch drama.
In a pacing meet a horse led then won with Hontas Crooke second and Nerva Patchen third. The Maid led early to win another heat as Nerva Patchen and Wiltranby followed. Maude Emperor dominated the 2 1/4 pace stake with The Private and Hipless placing behind.
Portland Maine reports a day of violent electric storms with several buildings struck. A barn burned on an island. later continuous lightning caused widespread awe though no major damages reported by 11 p.m. Local reports note trees shattered and animals killed in a few instances across the state.
A severe afternoon storm in Livermore Falls Me caused lightning to strike several sites. Ed E Pomeroy's barn caught fire destroying the structure and thirty tons of hay with an estimated loss of 1000 dollars, partially insured.
A severe storm hit Hanover New Hampshire today with strong winds and heavy rain. Trees were uprooted crops injured and a barn on Lebanon road known as Freshman chapel owned by George Allen of Manchester collapsed under the force.
An Arlington fire at 9 PM reached box 26 on Warren street and damaged a boiler plant water tank and a carpentry shop at Warren W Rangson’s estate. The blaze consumed stock and tools with a loss around 2500 dollars, partly insured. cause remains unknown.
Rev John W Day longtime pastor of the First Unitarian society in Hingham resigns to accept the pulpit of the Church of the Messiah in St Louis with a seven thousand dollar salary. He was born in Wo burn on June 13 1861 and educated at Meadville Theological Seminary and Harvard Divinity School. He plans to read his resignation on Sunday and depart in September.
New England Chautauquans draw large attendance with a 2 pm talk by Rev Edgerton R Young on Indians wigwams and campfires. 4 pm youth class led by Prof George W Peace. physical culture class in Normal hall under Miss Annie Swan. Hymn session in Auditorium led by H F Conant. paper on Sunday school grading. Marlboro Brass then an open air concert and a 8 pm public concert in the Auditorium directed by Jules Jordan. Columbia council O U A M installs new officers in Pythian hall with Deputy Gale presiding.
The Lands and Buildings Committee voted to recommend the city council erect a new stable with ten common stalls and two box stalls in the ambulance yard to house the departments horses. The project would cost about $8900 including flooring and sewer work, but some members urged coordinating with the board of health and city resources to avoid duplication.
About 40 men employed on Westford Street paused work for two hours Friday to protest a plan to raise their day length from nine to ten hours without extra pay starting Monday. They blamed Mayor Crowley, planned to march to his home, but a foreman arrived after talks with the Boston Paying Company and ordered a return to the old schedule.
Major Alexander Greig now a captain in the 26th regiment received orders from Col. Rice to report at once for duty at Plattsburg where the regiment is organizing. He leaves tomorrow night and expects to return in about ten days.

Mrs Allen wife of the Worthen Street M E church pastor will lead the gospel meeting at the city farm tomorrow with her son assisting in the music. Services begin at 3 o'clock.
Marie Bergeron and Romeo Vezina, who fled Lowell seeking marriage after defying parental opposition, reportedly wed in New Bedford. The couple had previously been prevented by Romeo's father, who alerted authorities during earlier attempts in Nashua and Lowell, and MIssive efforts to stop them failed. The bride is 18 and Romeo reportedly 21, with family regrets voiced by the father.
In a police court session Judge Pickman convicted Peter Lenardes a Greek of larceny after he admitted taking a watch and chain valued at 24 dollars and 19 dollars in money from Harris Spudeas who lived at 18 Fenwick Street. The items were secured and later returned. Lenardes admitted guilt though denied the money. A prior assault conviction is noted and liquor seized on July 3 and 6 with forfeiture to the State. The Ryan and Co. Bachelder case regarding pretending to be innholders is mentioned.
