Bernard McKean aged 82 died after a fall from an electric car at Wier Village near Taunton Thursday evening. He died about midnight at Morton hospital. He was unmarried. Hon Moses T Stevens is the town of North Andover’s largest taxpayer this year with personal tax of 2975.51 dollars. M T Stevens & Sons pay 2519.59. William Sutton of Salem assessed 1918.20. Anna M Stevens trustees 1683.67 and Charlotte E Stevens 1363.14. Davis & Furber Machine Co pays 5587.72 and North Andover mills 1233.95. Henry L Gregory, former Pittsfield merchant, sentenced to State prison for 3 to 4 years for forging notes totalling 2000. Jack Larouche, 7, drowned in Clark's pond Amesbury on Friday after raft mishap. body recovered. James McNeil, 14, drowned in clay pit near Tufts College. body recovered. Spasmodic efforts to enforce Sunday laws in Worcester seem to have subsided as druggists and restaurant keepers removed coverings from cigar cases and sold cigars and tobacco freely.
Indiana Senator A J Beveridge has not been heard from since June 30. He was quarantined aboard a ship at Nagasaki Japan with Asiatic plague aboard a ship carrying Chinese victims from Hong Kong. Mrs Beveridge is at Kioto. Beveridge has traveled extensively in China and around Manila on horseback and was with Lawton's advance under fire several times with several escapes.
Hundreds of African Americans gathered in Chattanooga Tennessee on July 24 to perform a voodoo style dance. Participants traveled from Alabama and Mississippi to join the ritual as drums echoed through the area. Officers plan to curb the gatherings after the large turnout and prolonged dancing.
Cleveland authorities ended an all night session after scenes of disorder during the street car strike. Early today cars ran on about six lines with few passengers as city leaders planned to request additional troops following the prolonged unrest last night.
San Francisco July 24 The transport Tartar carried the Nineteenth Infantry the largest force in the country 1800 men to Manila Gen Joseph Wheeler and his daughter were aboard among the passengers.
During a thunder storm at the Charlottenburg cycle track in Berlin forty people leaned against a wire railing. The wire was struck by lightning and three were killed while twenty were severely injured.
New York July 24 the body of the man who shot himself at Priscilla Saturday was identified today as R. W. Brownell of Bristol Rhode Island. No cause is known for death by own action.
The Czar is escorting the body from Koskowoc to St Petersburg. The body reached Koskowoc last night and the Czar traveled there to meet it. They are expected to arrive in St Petersburg this afternoon.
The week after Dover’s meet all horses racing at Rigby will join entries from Old Orchard and other New England meetings. Entries are large in some classes and Secretary Huntington forecasts a very successful gathering. Rigby trainers praise the track and footing as the best yet, hoping for good weather to ensure a grand meeting.
Overseers from Tremont and Suffolk mills played a baseball match at Beaver View Park on Saturday. Suffolk won 22 to 10 with Farrell of the Silent club pitching for Suffolk and Gerten for Tremonts. Other events included tug of war, hitch and kick, and shot put. Suffolk captured shot put and hitch and kick while Tremonts won the tug of war. Refreshments followed.
The annual meeting at 10 o'clock at Railroad National bank rooms elected Sewall G. Mack George F. Richardson Joseph H. Read Jacob Rogers George S. Motley Alexander G. Cumnock and A B Covel as directors. George F. Richardson named President Frank B. Dunbar Clerk and Jacob Rogers Treasurer.
The semi annual meeting was held in Odd Fellows hall Saturday evening with Geo L Fowler presiding. Reports showed the society flourishing and a dividend of 11 cents on the dollar was voted. A C Richardson and Hampden Spiller were elected auditors for 12 and 6 months respectively. George L Fowler John H Colburn and Henry Smith were elected directors for one year.
A Sunday night brush fire near Belle Grove burned quietly with no cottages or camping shacks in danger. The flame, visible from electric cars and high ground on Andover street, resembled two great barns but consumed only brush.
Boarding places on farms near Lowell are sought for Country Week children. Apply with references to Mrs A M Paxson on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons from 2 to 4 at the Ministry-at-Large office, Middlesex Street, Lowell.
Transactions show Lillian Sayles selling to Ellen O Hearn and Patrick Donovan selling land for $1. Other deals include James Day administrator to Herminne Brodeur for $2500 and Joseph Duffy guardian to Agnes Maguire for $1200. Multiple parcels, mostly $1, appear across Lowell and neighboring towns including Tewksbury Dunstable Wilmington and Billerica with varied buyers and small sums.
A Boston meeting of the New England Roller Polo league granted franchises to James Blake for Lynn and Toby Lyons for Newburyport, completing the circuit with Lowell, Lawrence, Manchester, Salem, Lynn, and Newburyport. Applications for other cities were tabled. The season will run about November 1 to March 17 using a composition leather ball. R P Kelly, the Boston secretary, will oversee player applications and league affairs.
Ex-Councilman Charles H Boisvert receives a letter from Thaddeus Ducharme of Dawson City describing a 1898 gold journey. Ducharme left Lowell March 19 with Caron Page Lafortune George Casse and N David. David returned to Lowell and Page Lafortune left the party at Testin Lake. Ducharme and Casse located claims 22 miles from Dawson adjoining rich claims and expect to begin work July 15 after winter employed by the Canadian government at Dawson City.
A grand entry is assured for the mid-summer meeting opening at Maine's parlor track on Tuesday August 1 for four days of racing. The event features prominent entrants and a full program across the four-day run.

Rev S T Ford’s sermon last night contrasted Robert G Ingersoll with Voltaire and Thomas Paine. He argued Ingersoll’s agnosticism did not warrant condemnation and questioned what un belief has accomplished for civilization or distant peoples.

He argues time equals opportunity for service and love, urges restraint in leisure, warns against pleasure excess, and urges meditative walking, reading, and devotion. He notes rapid transit and bicycles tempt waste of time and urges balance between work, rest, and spiritual growth.
Lieut. Thomas Talbot of North Billerica is notified of appointment to a captaincy in the 26th regiment under Col. Rice. The War Department and Governor Walcott have signaled approval. Talbot, about 29, previously led Talbot mills staff, served in the Spanish war, and joined Porto Rico campaign with the Sixth regiment before resigning to tour Europe. He prepares for departure pending formal notification.
A strike breaks out at the Boston Paving Company after foremen order ten hour days for gravel pit workers at Pawtucketville. About 15 men refuse to dig gravel and walk off the Mam moth road site, protesting the ten hour schedule and alleging political motives in the contract dispute involving Mayor Crowley. Approximately 150 workers are affected across two jobs on Westford street and Mam moth road.
The officers and prudential committee met with Rev. George C. Wright in the Free church this morning to arrange the October gathering at Ayer. Speakers include Rev. Samuel A. Eliot Rev. Wright Mrs. Preston Keyes Rev. Minot J. Savage D. D. and a speaker from the Woman's Alliance.
