Mayor Dimon stated his aim to secure temporary relief for the Pawtucket bridge issue until a new bridge is built with strong safeguards and traffic limits. The city will repair stables, begin work after Sept. 8, and band concerts are scheduled at North and South common and Fort Hill park in July and August. Manchester tax abatements totaling 120000 may be paid by the city, a point of interest to Lowell city officials due to lack of experts at trial.
Philip Emmons of Garwood New Jersey fought a 100 pound sea turtle at William Wussler's Broad street restaurant in Elizabeth. The turtle bit his calf, four diners tried to intervene with sticks and canes, and an icepick through the neck ended the attack. Emmons was treated by a surgeon and the turtle was decapitated.
Lawrence reports 47 year old Richard W. Walsh committed death by his own action by turning on the gas yesterday after a quarrel with his wife who left him on Wednesday. He had been despondent since the separation.
The Traders National Bank transacts general banking and offers foreign exchange in English French German and Swedish money. It provides safety deposit boxes private rooms a 4 percent savings rate compounded semi annually with monthly interest and a ladies banking room. It serves as depository for United States and Massachusetts. Banking hours are 8 a m to 4 p m Saturdays 8 a m to 1 p m and 7 to 9 p m. Banking rooms located at Middlesex Street 30 to 46 and Post Office Avenue 11 to 24.
Hazelton Pa July 20 Leaders of United Mine Workers after talks with Stationary Firemen's association return home. A truce is declared pending a joint convention at Wilkesbarre tomorrow. Miners favor firemen returning to work and delaying grievances until spring when the miners’ one year agreement ends.
In Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania on July 20 operations restarted at the Avondale mine of the Lackawanna company. Striking firemen resumed work and the overall situation improved as miners expressed willingness to return.
The Reading reports 4700 Boer prisoners at St Helena and Ascension Island. Only 17 percent are Transvaalers or Orange Free Staters. others are diverse nationalities, mainly Scandinavians, many deserters from South African ports. Boer officers at St Helena Club play games and relax. Col. Schield offers to aid the British, blaming surrender delays after Pretoria. Boers work at breakwater earning five shillings daily. Gen Cronje shows weariness but says little.
In San Francisco on July 20 the Epworth league convention entered its third day with animated enthusiasm. Dr. Berry cautioned delegates against excess sight seeing while sunrise prayer meetings drew large crowds. Open air meetings across the city attracted many attendees and the speeches were engaging.

Sixteen shipwrecked whalers from the bark Balaena have arrived in Seattle after their vessel struck a reef near St. Lawrence Island. The rest of the crew remained at Nome. The ship sank and was burned.
Steamer Ophir with the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall aboard was obliged to put into Albany for safety amid rough weather. The vessel reports all well and unharmed as of July 20.
Telegrams to the State police prove the man arrested at St Anne s des Monte yesterday is not Blondin the suspected wife murderer. Boston reports confirmation that the suspect identified earlier does not match Blondin thus closing that lead in the case.
The Mayflower with Governor Allen from Porto Rico arrived in Boston today and he immediately departed for Washington.

The Lowell and Boston Street Railway constructs a double track at Billerica Centre opposite the post office. The Lynn and Boston Railroad plans to connect its tracks at Andover and Main streets with the Lowell and Boston lines to form a curve near Luther Faulkner’s property and remove previous nuisances. Connections to Lexington and Boston lines are anticipated on the south side of the common, improving conditions. a shared waiting room for all roads at Billerica Centre is expected to be built soon.
Supt P F Brady said after the mayor signed the order for repairs that materials will arrive before stripping begins, likely in a week. He noted the floor will be raised nearly a foot and the upper structure braced, with new timbers and strengthened approaches, all to be done by regular department men.

The last five are college graduates with Dane a Framingham alum and the rest graduates of Lowell normal school.
The Lowell police court sentenced William F Winn a young man with a troubled record to fourteen months in Lowell jail after a guilty verdict on drunkenness assault and battery and assault on an officer. He appealed and was required to post bonds of six hundred dollars. Witnesses, including Officer McCloughry and Mrs Merriam testified to Winns intoxication and assaults. The court also fined or jailed several other defendants including Kenworthy for illegally keeping liquor and Kenworthy was fined fifty dollars on appeal. Others received probation or jail terms from one month to three months.
Friends of Miss Marion Doherty of Agawam Street surprised her Friday evening with an opal ring. William F. Sadler gave a presentation speech and Miss Doherty responded. A musical and literary program followed with piano solos, songs, recitations, dances, a Buffalo quartet, and refreshments served by Rose Lynch, Kittle Doherty, and Jennie Hanglin.
