The south bound Illinois Central flyer left St. Louis at 9 a m and wrecked near Lenzberg Illinois. The engine overturned and derailed cars. Fireman Thomas was killed and four passengers injured including A J Elflein of St Louis who is not expected to live. Cause of the crash is unknown.
West Derry New Hampshire July 18 a carriage mishap near Nottingham hurled Mrs I B Bartlett of Haverhill Massachusetts and Rev Dr and Mrs G L Demarest of Manchester from their vehicle. All three likely fatally injured. Dr Demarest age 34 is a leading Universalist clergyman.
A reported explosion on the Fifth avenue elevated line near 30th street Brooklyn blocked the line. Police fear the blast was the work of strikers after a riot on Fifth avenue earlier in the evening.
Pittsburg July 18 The Pressed Steel Car company has contracted with Carnegie Steel for 30 000 tons of steel plates monthly for 10 years. The deal is the largest steel contract awarded to a single firm and totals about 150 million dollars. A company representative said the material cost will be about 15 million dollars annually.
Assistant Secretary of the Navy Charles H. Allen arrived in Portsmouth and inspected the navy yard this forenoon escorted by Admiral Remey. He was greeted by the marine guard with honors and a salute aboard the U S Dolphin before it sailed for Marblehead at eleven.
Joseph Lamarine age 45 was struck by a passenger train today while crossing the New York New Haven Hartford railroad tracks in Willimantic Conn and will probably die according to officials.
The grocers and butchers held their annual picnic today at Willow Dale with the electrics to Lakeview crowded all morning.
A petition in bankruptcy has been filed by EB N Wood and Company of the city. Secured claims total 173.70 dollars and unsecured claims amount to 2296.41 dollars.
The Common Council held a two hour session to address many finance items. A $30,000 sewer loan was approved in concurrence with the aldermen after debate on whether to delay for summer. Several sidewalk and street improvements were ordered or referred, and discussions covered city finances, debt, and the summer adjournment with bids and staff concerns noted.
Joliet Y M C A general secretary P Harlow has submitted his resignation to president A C Johnston. The executive board will meet Monday night to decide whether to accept or seek to prevail upon him to withdraw. Harlow has led the association for over five years, guiding efforts amid a heavy debt and limited resources.
Nine drunks were tried before Judge Pickman this morning. Edward F. Tighe placed on two months probation, Thomas Lynch sent to the State farm, and Scully placed on one month probation. The State fire marshal is in town today investigating the Scoville fire on Forrest street Monday night. Several witnesses were summoned. the hearing was in Chief Hosmer's office. Driver Fuller of the Central fire station attended revival services with his family at Chelsea, Vermont.

In Lowell two men Michael Reagan and Philip Murphy killed at the Lowell Gaslight works on June 28 prompt suits for 5000 each. Damages will also be sought for Jeremiah Sullivan and Louis Gaza killed at Graniteville on June 28. The Hogans represent the plaintiffs in all cases.
Mary Slattery, 11, who delivers dinners to her father at the Lowell gas works, fell into the elevator pit this morning just before noon. She was taken to St John’s hospital where examination found no broken bones, though she suffered severe shock. The girl resides at 8 Madison street.
A mad dog, found by two men on Market Street, was brought to the police station. The animal foamed at the mouth and several residents narrowly avoided bites before Humane Society agent Richardson dispatched the dog with two tranquilizing bullets.

In Billerica Rev. D W Hardy preached at the Congregational church on July 16 from the text Ye Shall be My Witnesses. Sunday school met at noon in the vestry. At 6 80 Miss Alice B Hall led the Y P S C E on A Friend in Need. The service was interesting, helpful, and well attended.
Levi Wright aged 29 pleaded not guilty and waived examination in district court before Judge Wallace. He was bound over in eight hundred dollars for his appearance before the grand jury in October.
In this city on July 18 Katie Regan child of Cornelius and Bridget Regan died at age six at the family home 15 Richmond street.
