In Melrose on July 17 Italian laborers attacked contractor Everlin over wage claims linked to sewer work. Everlin was seriously injured but police restored order. A later meeting secured police protection and about 50 workers returned to site.
Rose Heimbach, driven by jealousy over attentions to Mrs. Thomas Smalley, hurled a pint of sulfuric acid at Smalley in Smalley's parlor in Butte. Smalley is reported to be dying from the injuries. Mrs Heimbach and her sister were arrested. Haskins, the sister, is said to have become a raving maniac.
In Boston on July 17 arrangements for ex Governor Russell’s funeral proceed slowly awaiting arrival from Canada. Cambridge residents hope the body lies in state at Cambridge city hall Monday for a final viewing, with burial likely Tuesday. Dr Swan arrives from Magnolia with Mrs Russell and the children.
St Louis July 17 The middle of the road populists seek opposition to Bryan and the Chicago platform. Leaders say the party and its principles must be preserved and that it should run its own candidates. A conference of state silver leaders is set for July 21, the day before the national silver convention.
Miss Rachel C Fairfield of East Brookfield aged 62 was instantly killed at 5 11 am when struck by a North Brookfield train at the crossing She was thrown about 20 feet from the track and found to have both legs and arms broken with a terribly crushed shoulder.
In Boston on July 17 an unidentified man jumped from the steamer Pilgrim off New Haven. A boat was lowered but no trace of his death by own action was found. The man stood about five feet eleven inches tall, weighed around 200 pounds, and wore a light suit.
SOLID FOR GOLD. St. Cloud Minnesota July 17. The Sixth district republicans have nominated G. K. Morris of Duluth for Congress. The convention endorsed unequivocally the St. Louis platform. The district is now represented by a silver man, Cc. A. Towne.
The U S S mail steamer Columbia is stuck on rocks near Tuscadore California and cannot be pulled off though movable cargo has been removed. A storm or high tide is expected to finish breaking her up.

The American Flint Glass Workers convention adjourned sine die after electing officers. The 97th convention location was decided and will be in Pittsburgh.
London July 17 Humbert bicycle works in Coventry burned last night destroying 4000 unfinished wheels and causing a loss of 80000 pounds.
New York July 17 official bulletin reports Cornelius Vanderbilt passed a quiet night at 9.30 a m continuing his condition remains stable with no major changes described in the update.
In Cleveland July 16 a seventh inning rally gave the home team a 7 to 1 victory over Boston. O'Meara debuted as catcher, excelling behind the plate and at bat while Stivetts and Cuppy pitched well. National League scores included Cincinnati 5 Baltimore 0, Philadelphia 5 Pittsburgh 3, Louisville 12 New York, Brooklyn 7 over St Louis 1, and Washington 17 over Chicago 8.

City Hall defeated the Lowell Police by 19 to 11 at the Dracut oval yesterday afternoon. McGuirk pitched for City Hall as Owens and Swan starred for the police. The game ended with City Hall extending a lead after sixth inning, amid errors by the policemen and steady hits by City Hall. Umpire Frank Fagan officiated, and reporters floated the idea of a nine made up of press members.

The sports budget left funds unspent, raising questions about returning money to the treasury. The baseball prize was rumored at $25, yet bills show $62.50 for the fair grounds game and another $62.50 for the unplayed Y M C A game.
Veritas lodge number 43 I O O F hosted Grand Master Austin S Esty Deputy Grand Master Winfield Nevins and Grand Instructor Joseph York. The initiatory degree was conferred on several candidates and the grand instructor spoke on degree work. Speeches were delivered by other grand officers.
A Dorcas Temple Rathbone Sisters group hosted a picnic at Crystal Lake Grove yesterday with about 100 attendees. The successful event was credited to the committee comprising Mrs S A Potter Mrs C H Glidden Cora Stiles and Mrs Clarence Lockhart.

An elderly woman over 60 was seen walking with a large bundle along Middlesex street. She refused ambulance aid, said she intended to walk from Lowell to Worcester, had hoped to meet friends in Lawrence who had moved, and was nearly destitute after her money ran out.
All street committee members are summoned to testify before the grand jury on the horse purchase matter. Additional men who did not testify at hearings have been served papers. The jury determines if evidence supports a court case. attendance is required. The attorney general is reportedly interested in the proceedings.
An elderly woman was thrown from a carriage last night near the residence of Charles W. Philbrick at Methuen street in Centralville. She walked home unaided. The horse was captured at Methuen and Twelfth streets.
