First Lieut. Henry Crane of Company C Ninth Infantry M V M died Monday. Born in Brookline he was educated in Brookline and Boston public schools. He joined the Ninth in 1883 and rose to first lieutenant serving in the Cuban campaign. He was well liked for his kindly disposition and military acumen and sank suddenly after ill health.
Atlanta July 15 a special to the Journal reports the Blue Ridge railroad was auctioned here today for 100000 the upset price. Purchasers Patrfax Harrison of Washington and B L Abney of Columbia are directors of the Southern railway.
The Brockton police committee Aldermen Lane and Bradford quit Monday night over disagreements with the mayor. Jerome Davis, 35, was found dead on Surfside Nantasket Beach Monday evening. Medical Examiner Spooner cites drinking and sun exposure as probable causes. In New York, July 16, Katie McVeight of 263 East 13th Street died after a quarrel with Mary Jennings of 240 East 46th Street at the restaurant 123 University Place where both worked. Magistrate Mayo remanded Jennings to the coroner, and she was committed to the Tombs for the inquest.

About 2 30 o clock Sunday morning Officers Downey and Freeman spotted smoke from 284 Gorham street and found a brisk blaze. They entered and quenched the fire before any damage occurred.

Police charge Old Lowell tavern proprietors John J Reagan and Michael P Reagan with illegally keeping liquor after police found beer served with sandwiches on Sunday. They argue a Boston judge's Dewey decision allows it, but police proceed to court Thursday for a ruling.
A break at a local variety store led to the loss of cigars and tobacco. Officer Fox effected an arrest in connection with the incident, with details indicating the proprietor reported the theft.
John Cereia a Grecian boy living on Emory Street was taken to the police station with his mother who claimed he carried a revolver. He denied possessing a weapon and said he works in Appleton mills earning $5.50 weekly, giving most to his mother who wants the extra quarter. Deputy Welch urged the boy to return home and be a good son. The boy preferred living independently though he is employed and has only been idle a few days in two years.
A man named Victor Smith of Mammoth road West Dracut reported his bay horse and end-spring square box buggy stolen from Market street near Dutton street around 9 PM. At midnight two boys in a bay horse and open buggy were found driving through Palmer street and brought to the station. The older boy, 12, identified as William Breen of Pawtucketville, and a younger boy claimed to be Joan Folland of Cross street. Four new bars of toilet soap were found on Breen. Breen admitted previous thefts and both boys face charges including breaking and entering and larceny, with Breen also charged with stealing the horse and buggy.
