Levi W. Jackson alias James D. Blake, a nine year felon released for good behavior, claims John Reed staged a long bunco career, fled Worcester by dummy, rode from Providence to New York, San Francisco, and London. Reed allegedly carried $100,000, hides under an assumed name with Mrs Reed in London, and cannot be extradited.
A. G. Pollard & Co. advertises hardwood finish screen doors with bracket corners and heavy framing. Stock reduced from $1.25 to 0.85 each, walnut finish doors from 0.89 to 0.69 each, with only 17 remaining in stock since spring.
The Trades and Labor council voted to hold Labor Day sports on the South common with a parade and an official programme. A mocking remark about the kissing bug warns it will be held responsible for mosquito bites and potential illnesses.
Gen Wood imposes absolute quarantine in Santiago to stamp out yellow fever. Officials and employees barred from entering the city, American hotels and saloons closed, intoxicants barred for Americans, and transport halted. Troop movements concentrate at Songo and Morro. rail and ship lines barred from bringing Americans in. Cristo to house headquarters.
A Maine Steamship Co vessel named Horatio Hall, a 3000-ton three decker with 300 passengers and 60 crew, ashore near Woods Hole after leaving New York for Portland. The ship floated at high tide and moved off seemingly uninjured, resting near the shoreline.
The cruiser Olympia, returning from Colombo, arrives in Suez with Dewey and crew in good health though many suffer malaria. The ship is quarantined with shore contact prohibited. After canal passage, Olympia will dock at Trieste.
Four men stopped a south bound Colorado Southern train near Folsom New Mexico last night blasting the express car with dynamite. Passengers were not harmed though the heist repeats a prior incident at the same location last September. Local authorities investigate the robbery with no arrests reported yet.
The Paris is reported fully afloat and anchored safely in a small creek near the rock strike. Pumps work well and a tow to Falmouth is expected at high tide, with the vessel cleared of the rocks and stable for passage.
Indianapolis July 12. The Order of the Iron Hall receiver filed a final report and court order closes the trust immediately. Since the receivership began, nearly $2,000,000 has been distributed to 45,000 claimants.
Southampton July 12. The cup challenger Shamrock will sail only one race with the Brittania and then proceed to the Clyde to be fitted for her Atlantic voyage. She remains in dock, petticoats on and fence built, guarded by police.
Jamestown N Y July 12. At 3 this morning lightning caused the destruction of half the business portion of Frewsburg. The loss is $20,000. There is no fire apparatus. It was the most severe electrical storm ever known here.
Dedham July 12 John W and Joseph B Seery were arraigned this morning for felonious assault on their mother Ellen 70 as the result of which she died The charge was really one of murder.
The Grand Army of the Republic pension committee, led by Col. R. V. Brown, opened its inquiry in Washington. It toured the pension office, reviewed files, and will report conditions and propose reforms if needed. John A. Palmer of New York said the committee will examine the entire pension system and make recommendations to the G. A. R.
Senator T C Platt and Governor Roosevelt conferred in the Senate office this afternoon. Roosevelt then left for Oyster Bay. Platt said they discussed Roosevelt's conference with President McKinley on appointing State officers to new volunteer regiments and endorsed uniting Independent and Republican groups to oppose Tammany Hall in the coming campaign.
Ambulance records two incidents last night in Lowell. William H. Cowell of 1082 Gorham street had the end of his right third finger severed in machinery. Dr. Burnham treated him, then Dr. Halpin. At about 9:30 p.m. another bicycle crash occurred on the boulevard. a young man injured in a carriage ride to Fletcher street was being taken home. The crash near the double path junction echoed Miss Lapierre’s death, blamed on poor street lighting and bicycle lamps.
A Cambridge dated list names numerous individuals connected to wills and administrations in jurisdictions including Everett Belmont Concord Watertown Somerville Stoneham Winchester Malden Newton Waltham Marlboro Framingham Natick Sudbury Needham and Nashua. The long roster includes Mary Ruthven Gee Mary Wilder Adelaide Rowell and others across Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
In Putnam Connecticut at midnight Mrs Chauncey Talbot aged 28 drowned herself and her two year old son in a incident described as a fatal double tragedy. Local authorities investigated the scene and reported the deaths as a deliberate act tied to family crisis.
City aldermen approve a 50000 loan for the high school annex and a separate order for a chemical engine in the Oaklands. They also hear plans for the annex and consider pole location petitions, paving projects, sidewalk repairs, and a projected water tower move.
The committee on electro wires met before the aldermen and signed a report urging underground placement of Electric Light Telegraph and Telephone wires. Beginning at the electric light station on Perry Street, wires would run to Church Central Merrimack Streets to City Hall. The wire inspector’s statement outlined several underground installation methods.
The street car company says passengers stranded near the Shawsheen river were attended to as quickly as possible and that waiting for another car was unavoidable. They deny any delay at Billerica Centre after arrival there.
Burglars entered Henry W. Tinker’s Elm street home and stole over 35 dollars in cash plus a 50 dollar check. They ransacked rooms, opened a dining room window, and left unnoticed. Mrs. Tinker reports chloroform and 2 to 6 am timing with a yard noise. Police notified. other case notes include Peter Wood’s liquor charges with a 50 dollar fine and postponed sentence.
Three drunkenness cases were heard in the police court before Judge Pickman. James and Katharine Harding, a couple, faced charges with prior appearances. Powers faced larceny of four railroad tickets from Adele Garceau, with complex circumstances and medical notes detailing the exchange scheme, police involvement, and eventual guilty verdict with suspended sentence and probation.
The Mr Zion lodge of Good Templars held a Tuesday evening session at their hall on Gorham street. Under Miss Maude M. Mountford the good of the order featured auto harp by Carl Santesson readings by Florence Gurtin Phoebe Crabbe Jii lian Curtis and Maude Curtis, with the last singing. Remarks were made by Ida Tileton Wm J. Smith Samuel Gordon C S Varney and others. The lodge was invited to the Elven lodge reception for Hector Turnbull Thursday evening.
If bicycle statistics would influence the license vote next December it might be noted that punctures are higher this year due to an abnormal amount of broken bottles in the streets. One rider counted six shattered bottles on Appleton street between the post office and Thorndike street early this morning.
David Cunningham died yesterday at his home on Village Street West Andover. He was born in Lowell. Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed.
Funeral services were held yesterday for Agnella Rhonberg from her parents home in Dracut with burial in Catholic cemetery. Ellen Sullivan who died in Boston was laid to rest from the Northern depot with burial in Catholic cemetery under Undertaker O'Donnell. Patrick Boylan's funeral from Marion street home was followed by burial at St Patrick's cemetery Fr Leonard officiating with bearers named. A Roxbury death from Tuesday noon was buried in Catholic cemetery after services at Mission church.
