Nebraska bears heavy losses, with fewer than 200 in rank, while South Dakota has 275 on duty. Montana and Kansas show not more than 280 available, and 24 Nebraskan officers are on the sick list as regiments endured heavy fighting. Regulars suffer 123 killed or wounded in the Third Artillery.
The Paris entered Falmouth harbor under strong wind and tide and its stern struck a crowded wooden pier. The pier shook with panic among onlookers, but the ship was controlled and anchored without injuries.
Edwin J. Brogan surrendered in Lancaster after killing Marion Wiley aged 20, a neighbor. He says past annoyances and a Tuesday incident where Wiley threw stones at his dog justified the act. Brogan is married with three children.
Perth reports two British vessels wrecked in a severe storm. The Carlisle Castle sank off Rockingham with the crew perishing. The City of York foundered on Rottnest Island with the captain and 11 crew members missing.
Lexington July 12 The Republican State convention in Kentucky settled into business with district meetings and a strong showing for Attorney General W S Taylor for Governor. Opponents push attacks aimed at weakening Taylor while acknowledging the Deboe Taylor coalition controls the process. The Taylor faction secured the temporary organization and prel iminary points at the State central committee meeting last night and began the convention with momentum.
The Wholesale Saddlery association held its second day with visits to the navy yard in the forenoon and an executive officers elected. A. B. Turner Jr of New York was named president H C Noble of New Britain Conn vice president Milford Lewis of Cleveland treasurer and William A Mooney of Columbus Ind secretary. Delegates later traveled to Nantasket for dinner and concluded the convention with a Brunswick banquet.
The Electrical Review calls all interested in automobiles to meet in New York City in September to form a national automobile association. It argues police and park boards threaten the legal rights of self propelled vehicles and urges united action for enfranchisement and betterment of industry.
More than 100 wholesale and retail liquor dealers and patrons of the Harvard Brewing company travel from various New England cities to visit the brewery. James Stott of Billerica, visiting Point Allerton with family for the summer, fell downstairs Tuesday and dislocated his shoulder. At over 70 years old, the former superintendent of the Talbot mills, his injury is regarded as serious due to age.

Judge Pickman yesterday ruled for the plaintiff in the case of T. E. Adams versus William Cogger in a contract action. The defendant appealed. Walter F. Leighton represented the plaintiff and D. J. Donahue the defendant. A parallel suit, James F. Hill versus Wm. E. Riggs, was also decided for the plaintiff.
A Chicago committee now in Europe was appointed by the mayor to meet Dewey in Europe possibly at Suez or Gibraltar and extend an official invitation for a Chicago visit in the fall.
London July 13 Marchioness Salisbury wife of Lord Salisbury premier suffered a paralysis attack yesterday. Lord Salisbury cut short a diplomatic reception at the foreign office and hurried to the castle by special train.
In Bridgeton New Jersey on July 13 striking glass blowers attacked a car carrying 15 non union workers, wrecking the vehicle and scattering the men. They warned of further trouble if non union workers are brought in.
A lightning strike last night destroyed the Plaisted sisters Olive and Zelpha Plaisted barn near Varnum avenue road. The fire killed about 35 cows, 4 horses saved, 25 tons hay, 10 tons grain, several vehicles, and farming gear. loss estimated at 10,000 dollars, partially insured. Neighbors tried to save animals. the barn collapsed around 8:50 PM, with flames visible for miles.
A heavy thunder shower hit Phillips on July 12 with lightning striking at least ten places. Nearly every telephone line burned out and a barn on Eldridge hill, two miles from the village, burned to the ground with 70 tons of hay, farming tools, a horse, four sets of harnesses and a bull. Loss about $3000, insured $1000.
A thunderstorm struck a barn owned by Mr. Crowley on Lowell road West Andover destroying the structure and livestock were removed with difficulty. The loss to building and contents is estimated at 2000 dollars.
Townsend July 12 a thunder shower last evening brought lightning strike that hit farm buildings on the Bemis estate in Vermont and left all structures completely destroyed. The loss is estimated at 1200 dollars.

T. J. Dalton of 259 Worthen Street enlisted Monday in Col. Rice’s regiment set to deploy to the Philippines. Dalton, about 36, born in Waterford Ireland, has ten years in the regular army and served with the Second Regiment of Infantry in the Cuban campaign. He was with Gen. Kent’s brigade in front of Santiago from July 1 to 10, 1898.
At a Nashua city government meeting on Tuesday night the Nashua street railway company was granted a franchise to extend its tracks from the Main street terminus to a point a mile beyond. Work is expected to start soon on the remaining four miles to connect with the Tyngsboro cars of the Lowell and Suburban line.
Mayor Crowley and Superintendent Gillow awarded the Huntington Hall contracts. Farrell & Conaton won the plumbing bid at 5522 to 6158 with eight bidders. Barker Company won the heating and ventilation bid at 14364 to 15475 with five bids. Work can start once Boston and Maine ratify the lease.
The Cambridge city treasurer notes a satisfactory bond filed by Boston Paving in the Lowell suit. An attachment on city money to July 1 is removed. A commons committee meeting tonight will address band concert funding and the concert program. Alderman Peirce shows improvement, while aldermen push underground wiring, funded by utility companies, with city ordinances to follow. The aim is to place most wires underground, starting with crowded streets.

Miss Evelina A. Baril, a noted singer, wed Mr. Noe Champagne Thursday afternoon at St. Josephs parochial residence. Rev. Fr. Nolin, O. M. L. officiated with Miss Bella Baril as bridesmaid and Arthur Champagne as best man. A reception followed at 472 Moody Street, with guests from Boston and nearby cities. The couple will reside at 510 Merrimack Street after July 30.
Mr. Thomas Middleton and Miss Lila Miller both of this city were married Wednesday evening at St. Pauls church by Rev. L W Staples.
Veteran photographer John Haigh, long plagued by neck cancer, died Wednesday at 48 years. He resided at 135 Third Street and left a wife and one son. Also reported is the death of John E.
