Washington July 1 Uncle Sam to day will make himself a present of 40,000,000 as the new fiscal year opens. Treasury officials say it will be the most phenomenal in government history aside from the war measures. Stamp taxes on bank checks promissory notes telegrams money orders leases receipts medicines and other items are lifted. Internal revenue receipts rose to 307,566,116 for the year ending with one day remaining versus 294,451,587 last year.
Two men died from heat in Boston on July 1. Luke Eustis, 34, collapsed while sitting by a window. James Murphy died from prostration suffered Saturday. G. R. Whidden held part of an insurance claim on the Harris property damaged by the fire at the Rugg building Sunday morning.

Boston July 1 A fierce fire on Pier 5 of the Hoosac tunnel docks in Charlestown damaged the Warren line terminal. Six freight cars and a large amount of merchandise were burned, with losses estimated at $200,000. Spontaneous combustion in shellac started the blaze.
Mary Clark 65 was found dead in her Turner street room in Manchester New Hampshire after heat caused death. A police search uncovered a hidden wealth of 897 dollars in gold sewn inside a pair of corsets, weighing three and a half pounds, beyond the four five dollar bills found.
About 200 Illinois Central railroad workers in Chicago retire today under a pension system approved by President Fish and General Manager Harahan last May. Pensions are based on average monthly pay. The company funds $250,090 and will set aside up to $100,000 each year for pension payments.
Wrecking steamers with large derricks have begun the task of raising the sunken Mohawk of the Storm line, which went down Saturday night after leaving Glen Island with hundreds aboard. The captain said the vessel could be easily rescued though the cause of the wreck is not yet known.

Peter Bergerson set a new standard targets at 200 yards world mark firing for the Cheyenne Rifle Club. He scored 98 of 100 with the record official and to be recognized. Bergerson previously held the 97 point former record.
Buffalo New York July 1 The City National Bank placed in receivership by the controller of the currency Saturday night did not open this morning due to the action.
New York reports Thomas G. Barker will not appeal his five year term for shooting Rev. John Keller. He will use raised funds to support his wife during imprisonment and expects possible gubernatorial clemency after serving part of the sentence. Barker seeks immediate transfer to begin serving and predicts aid from friends and a pardon eventuality.
A series of drowning incidents across New York and surrounding areas occurred as youths and adults swam in rivers lakes and piers. Victims include Jimmy McDonald 11 at West 47th Street Harlem river swimmer George Williams 17 and veteran instructor John Goodwin 20 at Passaic river Bryan lake and Red Hook pier. Other deaths involve Andrew Kline 19 Seymour Pius 9 Hamilton J Johnson 17 John Phillips Patrick Gahns 45 and John Finnerty in bay river and harbor swims.

Fletcher S. Heath resigned by wire Saturday as president and director of the First National Bank of Oxford. Directors elected George C. Munns to fill the vacancy. Heath had retired Friday as director and vice president of the Miami Valley Bank in Hamilton. He was a longtime banker in Oxford and later worked at Hamilton and the Seventh National Bank of New York.
Last evening the house officers and brother physicians of Dr John F Mc Hugh of the City hospital staff held a farewell supper for the newly appointed resident physician of Lowell General hospital. McHugh has served at City hospital and earlier in New York, bringing influence and experience as he assumes the Lowell post once held by Dr F Herbert Coffin.

Englishman Joseph Barnes aged 39, recently from Lowell, was found dead this morning in New Bedford. Police report his Lowell address as 103 South Water Street, possibly South Walker Street, with sisters unknown. The body is at Wilson's undertaking rooms and sisters are asked to report to the police to claim it.

Lewis Lecuyer was removed to Lowell General Hospital after his arm was caught in a loom at the Lowell Weaving Company this morning. He lives at 70 Fourth Avenue.
A Lowell jail inmate Thomas F Cahill died Saturday from heat effects after heavy drinking. The city endured extreme heat through Thursday to Sunday with several prostrations but few deaths, including Hugh Scanlon and Alice Brown who were hospitalized. Heat affected workers and residents across multiple locations in Lowell.
Children of the Free Church Middlesex Street held a floral service Sunday afternoon led by Minister Mrs Kilparrick and organist Mr Charles Nichols. A large crowd attended and sang well.
