A London tailor notes that American gentlemen all wear stays but only two men in Massachusetts, Messrs. Storti and Amilian, wear them by court decree. The city endures a heat wave while a writ of error sends a dunning letter to the wrong man as summer cool fails to arrive.
Heat waves across the region push fatalities to 87 in 24 hours in Greater New York, with 183 prostrations. The past five days total 136 deaths. Highs reached 98 in New York City and 102 in Hackensack. Prostrations, illnesses, and multiple deaths reported from Albany to Pittsburgh.
Lawrence July 2 At a meeting of the aldermen last night John McKelligott was the only one of seven probationary policemen confirmed as a regular officer. Debate over who holds appointment power continues as civil service rules are cited. Pending a decision the men remain on duty. Council elected Charles H Choate as president replacing W B Bartley who resigned after a six month term. The $25,000 sewer ordinance was killed again by a party vote with Hagar voting with Democrats.
The Traders National Bank offers foreign exchange payable worldwide in multiple currencies including English French and Swedish money. It provides safety deposit boxes private rooms and savings accounts paying four percent per annum compounded semi annually with monthly rest. Banking hours are 8 AM to 4 PM daily, 8 AM to 1 PM Saturday and 7 to 9 PM for banking rooms. Locations include Middlesex Street and Post Office Avenue.

Buffalo July 2. The Niagara bank a state institution closed its doors this morning. Superintendent of Banks Kilburn is in possession. The main reason is the failure of the City National, in which the Niagara is involved. It was not deemed safe to continue business.
A six year old boy, Harry Giboney, reportedly drowned in the canal near Moody street bridge this noon while playing with other boys. He lived with his widowed mother in Dempsey place. Witnesses say he fell in from the east bank. undertaker Albert went for the body but it had not yet been recovered by 2 30.
Thomas F. O Connor 28 died suddenly just after midnight at his home 118 Adams street likely from heat prostration. Dr Irish attended. He leaves a father and two sisters in Ireland and five sisters and two brothers in the United States. Brothers reside in Boston and sisters in Lowell.
The Lowell City band led by I Therien performs a Wednesday night concert featuring March Bombasto Farrar Overture Star of the Sea Legger Bleger Schottische Rosy Cheek Laurendeau Baritone Solo Sea Flower Polka and a clarinet Sonata Sonnambula Night Express Galop plus a Waltz and a song sung by band members.
Petitioners from Dracut and Lowell seek an injunction to stop the City of Lowell from operating the Dracut rifle range citing unsafe embankments inadequate safeguards and bullets landing on adjacent lands and buildings. Lowell Massachusetts July 2 1901 Mayor writes to Supt Saunders denying approval for an $85 fireworks requisition for the city farm. He argues the funds should aid the worthy poor and notes public fireworks funding is separate. The decision follows a prior approval of $700 for public fireworks, deemed not parallel to this case.
The city ordered 75 000 bricks at 25 a thousand for the Aiken street paving from Merrimack to Ford. Bricks measure 9 by 4 by 3 inches and weigh 10 pounds each, twice an ordinary brick. The street department will lay them, leveling the pavement, with work expected in two to three weeks and a $5000 appropriation.
Work on the Lawrence street bridge includes new abutments piers flooring and sidewalks. Twelve to fifteen of one hundred catch basins have been built and the corner Middlesex and Marginal now has a completed settling basin. A Montreal despatch dated July 1 says police hopeful they may capture Wilfred Blondin, accused of killing his wife. A French-Canadian postmaster reported a man resembling Blondin near St. Remy for six to seven days, with Detective McLoughlin investigating alongside him. Blondin’s old home is near St Polycarpe.
Miss Lizzie Robinson, a cook at Coffin's boarding house at 712 Suffolk Street, died last evening from heat prostration. She collapsed about 9 pm and an ambulance took her to Corporation hospital, where she expired en route.
