West Indian troops on St Helena mutinied January 2 near Cronje’s imprisonment, raiding the town and injuring many before being subdued at dawn. The clash began over a quarrel between blue jackets and Indians, with all troops posted to guard streets all night. The censor suppressed the report, but the Associated Press received it by mail.
London Jan 30 Kitchener reports from Pretoria that De Wet has been engaged by Knox 40 miles north of Thabanchu with no details. De Wet intends again to invade Cape Colony. Earlier a Boer force entered Boysburgh damaging two mines and Commandant Marrais was captured.
A hotel fire at the Hotel Jefferson on East Fifteenth Street in New York killed two women, nurse Eleanora Downing, 25, and waitress Elizabeth Reynold, 30. Downing jumped from a sixth story window, Reynold suffocated. Damage estimated at $50,000 amid numerous dramatic escapes.
A report from Calcutta dated January 30 states that Kitchener plans to send 1000 Boer prisoners to India and place them in the Nilgira region of Bengal. Also noted is the creation of a scholarship in the academic department from which the late graduate departed two years ago, following a death by suicide attributed to depression.
Washington reports Brig. Gen. James F. Wade will succeed Gen. MacArthur as commander in chief in the Philippines to allow MacArthur a long overdue rest. Wade and Ludlow will be relieved and sail for Manila after March 1, Otis to command Dakota temporarily. The move follows a War Department policy to limit tropical assignments to two years to protect officer health.
Pittsfield veteran and former police chief James MacKenna was arraigned before U S Commissioner Wood on charges of sending indecent letters through the mails. He was arrested by Deputy U S Marshal Waters, with the case continued until Monday in bonds of 2500 dollars. This marks a second arrest on the same charge, the first case previously placed on file.

William H. Tucker was sentenced in Salem this morning to a total term of 15 to 23 years for three counts of larceny and two counts of forgery. He faced charges of larceny in Andover Derry New Hampshire and Lawrence.

James Welch a prominent Hudson resident and longtime Western horse dealer for Providence, Boston, and local markets, died at his High Street home after a brief illness. He was about 70. His wife died Tuesday night after a lengthy illness. The couple recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
