In Chicago on January 2 fifty three persons were overcome by the cold. About fifteen hundred sought shelter at police stations overnight as Mayor Swift ordered police to assist in locating the needy. The city mobilized relief workers to address the suffering poor.
Mrs Annie M Du Pont was discharged in Boston municipal court after arrest on a fugitive from justice charge, clearing the way for Supreme Court review of New York extradition papers signed by Gov Wolcott. The case is described as a possible persecution.

The blaze obliterated what was described as the finest library of rare books in the United States, with losses estimated at $200,000.

Brockton police raided seventeen places with many arrests and four drug stores raided Sunday morning seizing whiskey and other liquor including two quarts found at Eugene Linnehan’s Main street store.

The state bank commissioners present the annual report to the Governor listing 2 state banks 75 savings banks 12 trust companies 19 building and loan associations. Savings banks show 68 312 966 in assets 63 215 175 deposits 162 444 depositors with net declines from the prior year. Despite heavy withdrawals the sector remains in better condition than in 1893 following stricter investments and no unearned dividends.
Charlotte C. Cole aged 73 died Friday night from heart failure and was found in her bed Saturday morning at her Mount Vernon street home. Widow of Danville Cole, she left three children Forrest A. Cole Marcus D. Cole and Isabelle C. Cole. Born in Shirley Massachusetts she lived in Lowell for 50 years.
The report lists several funeral services. Phoebe L Conger died recently with interment at Edson cemetery. Catharine Nash was sent to Nashua for burial. Michael Hiland's funeral was at Catholic cemetery with bearers named. Mrs Scovil's funeral occurred from London street with arrangements by J B Currier. Services conducted by various clergy.
Luther Blodgett died Saturday morning at his son-in-law Rev. Dr. Samuel H. Virgin’s home in New York. Born in Peterboro New Hampshire in 1811 he supervised a weaving room then led mills in West Chelmsford and Brunswick Maine. He later ran a Boston business and during the Civil War manufactured swords at West Chelmsford sword factory. A friend of the fugitive slave he married Almira C. Glover in 1835. she died soon after. One of their three children survives. Interment at Mt. Auburn.
Measles remain prevalent in the city with a slight drop noted last week. Through Saturday noon, 70 cases were reported, down from 78 in the prior week.

Late Friday Harry L. Fowler sought help from Judge Hadley after alleging Eloy King and his wife Mrs. Fowler eloped to live together in Lowell on Chelmsford street. A patrolman and Capt. Moffatt led to a police station arrest, with the couple to appear in court today. Mrs Fowler had reportedly been missing from her home since last April.
Liquor inspectors Goodwin and Donaldson seized 20 gallons of wine and 7 gallons of cider from Christopher Picard at 18 Aiken Street on Saturday. The proprietor, who claimed he made the wine from raisins and sugar, was taken to police court for illegally keeping intoxicating liquor after samples were sent to the state assay er for analysis and found over 10 percent alcohol.
S J Garland's team vanished from a shed after a Chelmsford meeting. Police recovered it in Marlboro street and brought to Murphy & Wringham's Stable. A second victim, P A McKenzie, had horse and carriage taken from Central street. officer Maher recovered it in Middle street. Thomas F Greenhalge faces Police Court on multiple charges including assault, attempted knife attack, drunkenness, with a mysterious second man involved.
Joseph A Roy the popular young grocer and Georgiana Vigeant will wed tomorrow afternoon at three o clock A preliminary observance of the event the Rossini choir of which Mr Roy is a member will give him a reception this evening in St Joseph s hall Dutton street
