Chicago reports that plans were accepted for a silver palace at the trans Mississsippi exposition in Omaha in 1898. The structure will measure four hundred feet square with grand towers and the entire building will be clad in rolled silver.
New York January 22 Howard Scott the negro wife murderer was sentenced to be electrocuted in the week of March 15 Arthur Mayhew also colored and the murderer of Stephen Powell was resentenced to die in the week of March 7 Both men face executions in the near future as ordered by the court.
Madison January 22 John Dowd a University of Wisconsin literature instructor despondent over drinking and job loss killed himself with laudanum in a self inflicted death.
New York on January 22 three men Jacob Decker, John Murphy, and Martin Davidson were arrested for the bold hold up of banker Henry P. Pincus. They threatened him with a pistol during the incident.
Cecil Rhodes arrived in Plymouth from South Africa to attend the parliamentary investigation of the Transvaal raid. He traveled to England to participate in proceedings related to the case and to witness the inquiry as a central figure.
London report states the British steamship Salisbury collided with an unknown steamer off Ilfracombe. The other vessel sank and twenty persons were drowned.

Portland Mo Jan 21 The storm today caused several thousand dollars of damage to harbor wharf property. Tides rose higher than in eleven years and harbor currents swept away movable items. The lower harbor is crowded with vessels and no coastwise steamships sailed. Several schooners tied to docks reported minor damage from collisions with the wharves.
Boston January 21 The Fifth Congressional District Republican committee met at the State Republican committee rooms to elect officers for two years Byron Truell of Lawrence was re elected chairman and Representative Fredericks of Methuen was chosen secretary.
Bernard Shaughnessy and John Ryan were arrested by Officer Crowley at Merrimack Square after a fight in which they attempted to punch each other.
Amos Pendleton known as Captain Smith dies in Hingham alms house at nearly 92. Once valued at 100000, he earned a reputation as the hermit of Weir River.
Michael J. Dowd a Berkshire division brakeman for New Haven railroad was found beside Gilbert street Bridgeport Conn with his head severed from his body. Horace G Harwood of Dorset Vt died after being cut by a large saw at his mill. Frank Eddy son of D P Eddy of Clarendon Vt and worker for Burlington and Rutland railroad was instantly killed by a freight train as he lay on the track.
Neighbors report a South Loring Street eviction where a wife and children were ordered out for unpaid rent. On a cold windy night the doors were removed, forcing the family to seek shelter with neighbors who provided protection from the storm.
On January 22 a Greek resident filed a complaint alleging violence by fellow countryman George Theophilus. A warrant issued, Theophilus was arrested, but the Greek withdrew the complaint and Theophilus was discharged. Harrigan, a drunkard, jailed 20 days. Moran fined $3 for drunkenness with warning. The Ladies' Auxiliary of the Reform Club met last night to set a coffee party for Thursday evening, February 25. They will observe their anniversary on February 14 with a concert. Reform Club's Sunday meeting will feature Mr. B. F. Earley speaking on Phrenology the Science of the Mind. All are invited.
Semi annual examinations for admission to the training school began this afternoon at 1 30 o clock at the high school with an attendance of 44. The subject was Arithmetic followed by music or drawing. Supervisors A K Whitcomb F R Woodward and J F Williams oversaw the applicants.
Friends gathered at Parker's last night to form the Greenhalge club honoring Gov. Frederic T. Greenhalge. Gen. Curtis Guild Jr. was named president with Gen. E. R. Champlin as vice president and Col. W. M. Butting as secretary, aiming to promote Americanism and patriotic civic action within the Republican Party.

A subcommittee was formed to draft an amendment giving the Council power to elect department heads.
The plant and accounts of the Middlesex Record, formerly the Lowell Herald, were sold at auction yesterday. Union Printing company bought presses and printing material for 2520 dollars and the accounts totaling 850 dollars were sold to the treasurer of the Middlesex Record company for 350 dollars. The company will pay its debts, but stockholders are expected to lose their investment.
Parish petitions urged Rev D N Forget O M L to be recalled from Canada. The Ob late superior in Paris answered, praising Forget’s popularity in Lowell and indicating his replacement will not likely be recalled. The note, signed by Fr Antoine, commends the new pastor to the people.

The purchasing agent's office will be repainted and tinted for a more attractive appearance. Barnard will call for bids on 209 tons of six inch cast iron pipe and 150 barrels of flour. F. M. Barney & Co. flour tested satisfactory at the city farm and will bake bread similarly to a pricier brand. A car load of hay was purchased yesterday at $16 a ton. Supreme court arguments are expected around February 1.
The funeral for Kate Maguire was held at St Peter's church at 9 this morning with Rev Fr Mc Manus officiating. Interment followed in the Catholic cemetery, with Undertaker McDermott in charge of arrangements.
Edward Reynolds of this city was arrested in Manchester yesterday for burglary. He has just been released after serving a term in the Maine state prison. Phebe L. Conger aged 63 died at her home 277 Hildreth street yesterday evening. She leaves a husband John Conger and one daughter Mrs. Charles Guthrie.
Obituary notices report Margaret Collins aged 75 died in the city on January 22 at 62 Adams Street. Michael Hiland aged 51 died at home on Mammoth Road in Dracut on January 22.
