In Waltham on January 20 Patrick Clark John Doyle and John Green pleaded guilty to setting fire to a barn in August last. Two of the men were volunteer firemen and were paid for their work. They were held in 1500 dollars each.
Consul General Lee reports to the state department that Henry Delgado, correspondent for the New York Mail and Express and a Havana prisoner, died at the hospital last night in Cuba.

Bellevue hospital part of the medical college burned this morning a three story building with loss estimated at about fifteen thousand dollars. Many valuable instruments were destroyed in the blaze.
Auburn, Jan. 20. John Hoch was executed at 12.20 today for the murder of Minnie Ingersoll, sixteen, who repulsed him and was shot in July 1895. The case drew wide attention as Hoch killed the girl in cold blood after she rejected him.
Lynn January 20. Chas R Rumsey a shoe manufacturer filed an assignment today citing poor business as the cause.
Parts of the 1896 annual prison report show 237 admissions to the state prison by various means and 141 total discharges. The reformatory records 799 admissions and 805 liberty permits, with proposed $30,000 for a new hospital building and $214,800 yearly operating estimate.
Purchasing Agent Barnard plans a extra hire in his office and intends to name Clinton R Carpenter as the new temporary clerk at City Hall.

A mob removed John Johnson from jail and burned him alive at the Cotton residence for the Cotton family murder. Arch Joiner, his accomplice, was hanged, and Williams, accused of murdering his wife, was also lynched. The trio were all Black men seized by the mob.
At a Tuesday night meeting at the Park Street church in Boston the resignation of Rev. I. F. Lansing, tendered days earlier, was read and accepted. The N E A A U board voted to ask Boston Mayor Quincy to host the amateur championships of 1897 on Boston Common and to grant $1000 for the meet.
The Manchester New Hampshire will leaves $1000 to Trinity Commandery K T and to the Franklin Children's Home. Frederick E. Smith a 64 year old war veteran and house painter died instantly Tuesday afternoon when a scaffold hanging while painting a residence in Orange Connecticut slipped and caused a fall of about 80 feet.
Frank Riley Luke Donnelly and Rid ward Doyle were arrested by Officer Holland after attempting to dispose of 125 pounds of cable wire at a Market street junk shop. They claimed to have found the wire on a dump, a tale seen as unlikely. Riley and Donnelly are 21 and Doyle 20, with no admission of guilt yet.
Hessium Hessen a 19 year old born in Turkey shot himself in his room at 7 Chapel street during the noon hour. He had planned marriage with Marie Lepine a 17 year old from 7 Suffolk's court off Market street and had hoped to flee to Canada. The bullet grazed the ribs and was removed by surgeons at St John's hospital where Hessen lay in critical but improving condition as Marie Lepine remained with police before leaving toMedford plans.
Funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon for Mrs Ellen Buttrick Stanton at 11 Grand Street. Rev I J Lansing of Park Street Church Boston officiated with Rev A P Foster and Rev Dr E B Foster assisting. A floral letter from Old South Church Weymouth noted her lingering influence. Bearers included Deacon Pettee Albert Stanton E D Fletcher and A A Robinson. Flowers came from South Weymouth Sharon and others. Also mention Hessen and Miss Lepine hospital visit. Annie Connors body sent to Manchester NH for burial.
The Middlesex County Fourth Class Postmasters association met in the post office building with President C H Danforth of Tyngsboro presiding. Representatives included T Frank Lyons from Billerica vice president, William H Hills of Chelmsford secretary treasurer, Charles L Hodge of Dracut, T L Hazen of Shirley, Daniel F Splain of Forge Village, and Thomas M Foy of South Natick. Adjournment followed routine business.
The Police Board adopts new rules requiring all theatrical posters to be submitted for infection inspection before use and bans Sunday night performances without special permission. The measures aim to curb recurring complaints, especially over posters.
Lawyers for both sides and the Massachusetts Attorney General push for a rapid ruling on who holds the post of superintendent of public buildings in Lowell. The respondent Charles F. Varnum argues the City Council elected him by concurrent vote on January 6, 1896, re-elected January 15, 1897, and that he has continuously served since. The case to be reserved and presented before Judge Barker by February 1 with possible court action by Monday.
Inmates were finishing supper when a fire appeared in the ceiling above the school room at the city farm. The room was cleared calmly and Col. Pindar and his men found and extinguished the blaze. Damage estimated between 50 and 75 dollars. Fire blamed on rats.
At the annual meeting the High Street Church adjourned to Tuesday evening for the annual supper. Maj. C A Stott will preside and Mr Marden postponed a western trip to attend. Mrs Florence Burtt leads the supper with helpers. Choir likely to attend. music promised.
Police Court Hadley on January 20 disposed of several cases. John Campbell and Joseph Larochelle paid $10 fines, three amateurs received the usual $1 fine, and Samuel Garritt charged with threatening his wife was continued to January 30.

Miss Susie A Dutton of Wakefield daughter of Dr Charlies Button died Tuesday in Hyde Park while visiting her aunt Mrs ER O Taylor. She was about 27, educated at Westford Academy and Mt Holyoke, taught in Dunstable and Dracut, endured long illness with brief relief from North Carolina and Maine. Survived by brothers Paul Dutton Chelmsford Richard Riberot Hope Dutton Wakefield sister from second marriage and multiple aunts and uncles. Forrest G Coburn aged 47 died at his home 119 Prf hree street after short illness leaving widow son and siblings in Vermont.
