A New Orleans Times-Democrat account describes a raucous scene at the Playhouse where a spectator dreads a large, clomping patron in the audience. The narrator recalls a wild fall of the curtain and the disruptive impact of the big-footed man on fellow attendees.
Feagan trims religious imprecation while Bryan proclaims truth cannot be crushed. A jab at policy leads to a flare about Naples and Vesuvius, Manila’s dawn, and no Dewey Eve yet. The gypsy moth hums as farmers face a costly crop push and Nicaragua canal hints at a shortcut to success.
Lawrence common council convened Monday night and voted to concur with the board of aldermen in electing John P. Stone as city solicitor after twenty nine ballots. The meeting also noted various church calls and bequests including Mary A Barnard’s will funds for Amesbury and nearby institutions.
Frederick Milliken of St Louis was attacked by highwaymen who robbed him of money watch and valuables and dragged him onto the tracks. His body was struck by a passenger train and hurled into a ditch with severe injuries. Recovery chances are slight. the assailants fled.
Pittsburg January 17 Michael Ruminski known as the Polish dude who killed his wife and burned the body died by his own action this morning strangling with a bed card in the county jail. He was under sentence of death for the murder though the date was not fixed. He had proclaimed he would never hang. Before the woman's death his baby died under suspicious circumstances. Ruminski was well educated and cultured but regarded as the black sheep in a Polish family of royal blood.
The funeral train from Washington reached Boston at eight this morning and joined a through express at nine toward Lewiston. Senator Hale led the Senate delegation, and Congressman Bowtwell represented the House. Adjutant-General Dalton met the train to convey state sympathy, and a four foot square floral design from the Commonwealth attended the event.
Major General Shafter and his staff halted in El Paso to speak on the Santiago campaign. At the city park he praised volunteers while the crowd, including several local girls, asked for photographs and kissed him in the audience, causing embarrassment to the general.
President McKinley told the cabinet he has determined to court martial Gen Eagan. Secretary Alger was absent, but Adjt. Gen. Corbin was at the White House and in conference on the matter before the cabinet meeting. The order for the court martial will likely be issued today.
John Russell Young, librarian of the Congressional Library, died at his residence in Washington this morning after several weeks of illness. Physicians reported the cause as acute Brights disease with complications, attributed to overwork and excessive brain work.
The Fourth Infantry Regiment from Fort Sheridan with 1400 men, commanded by Gen. Robert Hall, arrived at Jersey City and will sail tomorrow on the Grant bound for Manila with Maj. Gen. Lawton and his staff aboard.
Albany January 17 Hon Chauncey M Depew was selected for United States senator by the Assembly receiving 84 votes. The minority backed Edward Murphy Jr the present incumbent with 60 votes.
In a close session, the Senate chose Depew as the Senator by a 27 to 23 margin with the minority backing Murphy. The vote reflects a split outcome and names Depew as the appointed official.
Two probate court sessions occurred this forenoon with Judge McIntire in the large court and Judge Lawton in the small room. The Parker will case was postponed to Feb 21 while the Plunkett will decree was ordered and may be appealed. Petitions and multiple wills and administrations were noted for probate or continuation with dates February 15 and 21. Formal proof concluded in the Blood and Davis contested wills without further trial.
Five youths including Thomas Berube George Martin Alfred Beausoleil Philip Gagnon and Napoleon Lajoie arraigned in police court for breaking and entering the John Lee variety store at Tilden and Moody streets last Sunday night and stealing tobacco cigarettes candy and coins. They were continued to the juvenile session Friday. The coal theft case against John B Plant who spoke only through an interpreter resulted in a $10 fine on a larceny from Boston and Maine railroad cars he appealed and was held for the superior court in $200. William Collins in bastardy case continued one week. Drunks Francis Doyle Dennis Downing Charles Bancroft and Joseph Bashaw taxed $1 each. Thomas W Dugan and William Monahan sentenced to four months at the workhouse.
Seven year old Thomas Mann of 712 Gorham street was struck by a two horse team near Gorham and Carter streets on his way from Carter street school. At St John’s hospital doctors found a fractured skull and a deep scalp wound requiring 40 stitches. He is expected to live.
The Assabet Manufacturing Company at Maynard resumes operations after a temporary shutdown for stock taking sparked by a recent assignment. Amory Maynard takes over the agency from his uncle Lorenzo Maynard. Earnings invested by workers total about 138000 dollars, seen as a savings fund with many workers expecting under 75 cents on the dollar from the adjustment. In Lowell the first Armenian baby born is Samuel Babigian, son of Asadoor and his wife. He was born Saturday. Mr. Babigian runs a fruit store at Tower's Corner.
City officials including Mayor Crowley Supt. Doherty and City Solicitor Quo will meet with Boston and Maine railroad President Tuttle and Locks and Canals representatives to discuss Huntington hall future lease expiring in 1902 and a proposed front addition with two entrances. Quo expects rail authorities to consent, and a settlement is hoped within ten days. Also covered are the Battery B Cuba discharge question, Montauk theft inquiry, burial grounds trustees meeting, Edson cemetery superintendent, and a memorial tablets committee.
A senior officeholder offers guidance to secure reelection and shares alleged tips on rival candidates while noting the superintendent of schools' clerk is exempt from civil service rules.
The Eliot church society met Monday evening with FE Pease chosen moderator and F P Haggett named clerk. The treasurer reported 223.30 on hand. Prudential committee led by Jesse H Shepard estimated annual appropriations at 4040 including salaries and repairs. Officers elected included Haggett King Fletcher Haworth Shepard and Nichols. Fletcher and Haworth declined continued service but were reelected. A sympathy vote for pastor Rev Dr Greene in illness and thanks to ushers were recorded.
The Worthen Street Baptist society met Monday evening. Officers elected include Moderator Findlay Stevenson and Clerk Walter W. Carr. Treasurer William H. Wiggin and Collector J. Kimball were chosen along with sexton O. F. Warren and auditors Packard and Wiggin. Standing committee includes Staples Wilson and Dodge. Pastor's salary set at 1500, music 450, sexton 200, collector 3 percent of pew rentals. Meeting adjourned 10 40 subject to committee call. Prior committee meeting led by F H Butler with Arthur Staples as secretary.

A State House hearing on the county commissioners petition to spend 12000 for 15 acres and a cottage at the North Chelmsford truant school. Speakers urged future expansion, noting rapid growth from 106 to about 285 boys, and suggested authorizing purchase of additional land beyond 15 acres.
Charles Meyottero a Lowell tailor died in jail after a spree linked to alcohol withdrawal. Agnes McDonald, Bridget Mooney, John Murray, and Mrs Maria Dyke are also noted in funeral and public notices. Funeral details include St Patrick's and Immaculate Conception church services and Gage family tributes.
Hampden F Crane aged 16 and William J Mooney aged 17 were arrested by Officer McCann on Middlesex street last night. The youths, who belong to Charlestown, said they came to Lowell to visit a friend who recently moved here from Charlestown. Parents will be contacted and arrangements made for their return to Charlestown.
Deputy Inspector R F McCrillis says liquor dealers face much red tape to reclaim the $1 a barrel assessment on fermented liquors ruled erroneous by the attorney general. About $5000 will be refunded in the district, with most payments going to Peter H Donahoe and D J Murphy in Lowell.
Madame Marrianne, one of four popular palmistry queens, has fully recovered from grip and resumes duties at the gypsy camp located at 382 Central Street. Daily crowds flock to the camp, underscoring the fortune tellers' prior popularity during their previous stay in Lowell.

At the Oblate Fathers residence on Merrimack Street, Hilaire Paradis and Mary Louise Lemin were married yesterday at 2 30 pm in a ceremony performed by Rev Fr Marion O M IL. The quiet service united the couple in matrimony officiated by the local priest.
