A Cleveland Plain Dealer print ad extols a tonic called The Grip describing its effects causing dizziness swollen nose puffy lip and unsteady steps. It markets quinine as a key ingredient and promises rapid relief though its dramatic language suggests caution about its potency.
A satirical note suggests Alfred Vanderbilt will no longer study French and mocks a late Cuban Schools superintendent. The item quips about frying pans, wood, and a non existent hazing at the electoral college while claiming Roosevelt shot a lion and senators governing themselves.
Manchester loses a long standing industry as Bisco and Denny plant in the electric light building on West Brook street will close and machinery move to Lowell. The branch has operated since 1857 and its removal will be felt by local business leaders and residents.
The Young People’s society of Gorham Street Methodist church held a Monday evening officer installation for six months. Rev N W Matthews installed Miss Orpah Sutcliffe as president and a slate including Lizzie Ogley, Richard Potter, Herbert Hadley, Thomas Woodcock, Mamie Hadley, and Mary E Ogley in key roles. Officials assisted. refreshments followed. The pastor noted a successful junior class and renewed vigor for the group.

In Kroonstad January 15 the burgher peace committee distributed Paul Botha's From Boer to Boer among Republicans provoking De Wet who vows to shoot the author on sight. Refugee camp hosts 2000 Boers as activity grows northward toward Lindley and more commands rally to De Wet in the south.
Opposition leaders concede Mathew Quay will be elected United States senator by the Pennsylvania Legislature. Both House and Senate vote at three o'clock. a majority in each chamber is expected. Joint session to canvass the vote and declare election tomorrow.
In Troyes France January 15 Coquard shot himself in a garret with arms and ammunition during a police chase and killed a citizen who came near. He was found dead hanging in the garret this morning after firing a gun under his chin with the shot exiting through the eye. The apparent self inflicted death occurred yesterday.
Report notes 63 passengers aboard a vessel that struck a reef during fog. The ship ran fast on a reef as a northerly gale blew. Despite the situation, no immediate danger was reported. In a separate update, the President is improving rapidly and does not expect to return to his office for several days.
In South Lawrence on January 15, William Hayward 21 confessed to police that robbery motive drove his attempt to chloroform Miss Katherine Cotter on Andover street last Thursday evening. He admitted buying chloroform after failed drugstore purchases and claimed desperation over stolen theater ticket proceeds and a missing $5 loan, leading to the assault with intent to rob. He faces charges of assault with intent to rob and breaking and entering linked to two Watts Laundry burglaries on Broadway.
Andrew C Remick of Hyde Park an inmate at Dedham house of correction escaped Sunday night through a roof hole after obtaining carpenters tools rope and overcoat. He is 35 170 pounds 5 7 light and a reward is offered for his capture.
Mary L. Burnham, a missionary in China, reports criticism of American policy by missionaries and foreigners. She says all is quiet now, but English and German circles fear the Boxers will strike once winter cuts Pekin from supplies.
John Stafford a 26 year old U S Marine private at the Brooklyn Navy Yard was killed early today by John Henry a Bowery bartender. Stafford was intoxicated and resisted removal after a dispute leading to a fist blow to the chin during a melee.
James R. Chapman, electrical engineer for the Union Traction Company, has been employed by Charles T. Yerkes to supervise the construction and equipment of London's underground railway system.
William P Frye secured renomination to the U S Senate in both Maine chambers today. The Senate vote stood Frye 24 Staples 1 while the House tallied Frye 107 to 13 for Staples.
The Ward line steamer Vigilancia with 53 passengers ran aground on the banks of Los Colorados 100 miles west of Havana in fog while en route from Vera Cruz to Havana and New York.
Lawrence Democratic Councilmen seek writ of mandamus to compel Republican members to show cause why they should attend a Lawrence common council meeting. Nine Democrats met, quorum lacking, meeting dissolved. Dispute centers on board presidency and Republicans' attendance.
Boston January 15 Patrick Lordan who turned state's evidence in the Cambridge fraudulent naturalization cases was discharged by Judge Lowell in federal court yesterday afternoon on the recommendation of Assistant U S District Attorney Casey William Corcoran another defendant pleaded guilty and on Casey recommendation Judge Lowell imposed a 300 fine
The Worthen Street Baptist society held a lengthy annual meeting last night with officers elected including Clerk Walter W. Carr and Treasurer John C. Wilson. The John Street church followed with reports noting thirteen deaths, long-lived members, benevolence totals, and new officers and committees for the coming year.
The annual meeting of Eliot church was held last night with a large attendance. Members discussed plans for the coming year and elected officers, highlighting community outreach and financial reports.
At the annual parish meeting last night the First Universalist church announced a yearly intake of about $5600 and invested charity funds exceeding $9300. George E. Roper was elected moderator. reports by J. M. Sprague, treasurer, David Chase, auditor, and W. F. Lane, collector were accepted. New officers include W. F. Lane treasurer and collector, Arthur D. Gilbert clerk, and George R. Lockwood, Fred H. Pearson, Robert G. Dudley, Sylvanus Bartlett as two year assessors. George R. Lockwood was named charity fund trustee.
At the union revival meeting Rev. George H. Clarke delivered an excellent sermon from the tort Rev. 22-37. A deep interest followed as an after meeting led by Rev. A. J. Wilson. A large number testified in favor of the gospel region and several persons asked for provers.
Directors and committeemen of the Y M C A and Ladies auxiliary met for a business conference with two speakers. pledges for foreign missionary work were taken. C L Rogers spoke on army service in Cuba and Porto Rico and praised regular troops. Alvida Almeda discussed Y M C A work in Brazil and leadership needs.
The First Spiritualist Society met Monday night and elected officers for the ensuing year. Frederick H. Coggeshall was named president, Willard Ireland first vice president, Mrs. W. H. Pihl second vice president, Joseph J. Devine secretary, James Gregory Jr. treasurer, Ella and Favor as collectors. Reports show the society in good financial standing.
Mr. T. FE. Parker and Mr. W. S. Fox depart tomorrow for Bermuda and will stay until February 1.
In police court this morning Charles Cochrane and William Lajoie pleaded not guilty to breaking into Simon Rostler’s Middlesex Street store and stealing $1.50, cigars, and stamps. Cochrane held on $500 probable cause. Lajoie’s bond pending other charges. Others faced related counts, including hen house burglaries in Chelmsford with 70 to 100 hens stolen, and three Greeks charged with larceny from person. Several defendants were released on bonds or placed on file as cases proceed to grand jury February 11. Also noted: minor fines for Sunday cards and drunkenness, plus a man cited for selling mortgaged property and non-support.
The Capt. John Ford society C A R held its first meeting since its new president Mrs C M Williams took office. Young patriots plan future labor among their peers and voted to present a flag to the Boys' club of Lowell to promote good citizenship and honor for the country.
A social hour preceded a meeting set for Saturday February 9 where the president will greet potential members. Eligibility requires descent from an ancestor who served in the War of the American Revolution, with age limits of under eighteen for girls and under twenty-one for boys.
Asa Osgood a 72 year old Pittsfield resident and longtime Lowell area trader was found dead in his Washington House room on Saturday evening. He cut his throat with a razor amid heart trouble and despondency. Friends reported his illness and a funeral is set for tomorrow at F. D. Osgood’s residence.

Within a year a new organ bells and sanctuary fresco. parish accepts the Margaret McGuinness estate. parochial school planned. ongoing upgrades to the 1869 church built with mass first offered Christmas day 1869. dedication of the current building was June 17, 1894.
The widower Mary E. McCauley’s funeral plans were set in motion today as he arrived from the city farm to oversee arrangements. He denies desertion, says a $3 postdeath payment was sent, and claims he pawned clothing to cover it. He works for Berlin Bridge company at $3 daily and vows to support their children, boarding them briefly before sending them to his New Brunswick parents.
