The government expedition to relieve Klondike miners will sail from Portland on the steamer Oregon January 23. The advance party includes sixty men, one hundred mules, and 250 tons of supplies.
Lawrence reports State Officer Hammond arrived to summon eight or nine men to Salem for grand jury testimony on alleged pay for influence in obtaining street department work last year. The Good Government association raised the issue at a pre election meeting. DeCourcey named a councilman, but the written communication was tabled. The district attorney ordered Hammond to investigate.
Announcement that Henry Varley, renowned English evangelist, will speak in Lowell at Immanuel Baptist church on Blossom Street for two evenings next Monday and Tuesday. Varley, 40 years in the Gospel, has preached in major cities and helped Moody during Chicago's world fair services. Currently based in Melbourne Australia.
Twenty years after his first U S visit Mr Varley travels widely with his wife spreading the Word of Life. He has preached in New Zealand Malacca Straits India South Africa Canada and the United States converting Buddhists and Hindoo devotees and even influencing Moody’s England evangelism during the early seventies.
Elzear Gaudette of 176 Barker Avenue says a highwayman stood at the corner of Bridge and Hampshire streets at 1 am and demanded money. When none was available he surrendered his brown ulster and gray top coat, and was sent home in his shirt sleeves. The assailant was a tall young man with a smooth face, wearing a dark ulster and a black slouch hat.
About 30 of 50 to 60 workers at Conant Houghton and Co suspender factory at Littleton went on strike to protest a new pay schedule that cuts wages by roughly 6 percent and reduces fabric shrinkage calculations. A meeting was held to consider the firm’s offer of a revised schedule aimed at restoring wages close to prior levels, with a favorable outcome anticipated.
In Hadley Police Court this morning five drunken defendants appeared. Mary E. Moran was sent to Sherborn for one year, appealed, and was held in 200 dollars bail for the superior court.
In the membership contest of L'Association Catholique Adelard Guimond received the top prize a gold medal and a society badge. Prosper Cossette earned the second prize a five dollar gold piece. Ten members with five or more names added to the roll each received a society badge.
Rev. James McGrath O M I of Buffalo and former Lowell priest collapsed at Albany Union Station on the way to Lowell for an Oblate chapter. He was 60. The body was shipped to Lowell for burial with funeral in Lowell and interment in St Patrick's cemetery. He led the Immaculate Conception church dedication in 1877 and served as Oblate provincial until 1892.
Members of the National Wool Manufacturers association attended their 34th annual meeting in Boston and toured the Lowell Textile School. The visiting group, including John N. Carpenter and others from across the Northeast, met Director C. P. Brooks and trustees, toured every department, praised equipment and student work, and finished with a luncheon before departing at 1.40 PM.
No word from the mother. The agent took charge of the child at the boarding house and an effort will be made to locate the mother.

Mary McCarty, a mill operative living at 117 Paige Street, gave birth to a girl about ten weeks ago and left notes of intent to seek work in Boston. She never returned, leaving the child in boarding house care. Mrs Watson notified Agent Richardson of the Humane Society after the mother’s prolonged absence.
Supt Cleveland J Cheney assumed control of the street department this morning at 6.10 o clock, greeted by cheers from the assembled men at the city stables. He met with the mayor at city hall, with no immediate changes announced though many are expected soon.
Albert Warren Ober of Chelmsford died at his home after pneumonia and complications including paralysis and meningitis. He leaves a wife and three daughters Ethel Bertha Ena Ober and sisters Sarah J Drew Elizabeth Skinner Priscilla Holden and Harriet Larcom. He was active in temperance work with the Good Templars and a member of Mechanics lodge J O O F of Lowell.

John Kerwin longtime Low ell resident dies at 26 Hall street. He leaves a wife, a son and a daughter and a brother Thomas Kerwin, a hackman. Mrs H Alberta Perley wed George E Perley of the City Institution for Savings at 37 Varney street. she is 21 and has two infant sons. Mrs Will George of Manchester NH survives.
Funeral services were held for Mary E. Martsin at Immaculate Conception with Rev Fr Reynolds officiating. Burial followed at Catholic cemetery under C. H. Molloy. Celinda M. Dickey died recently and was interred at Edson cemetery with Co M. Young directing. Three year old Ross Waite Merrill was laid to rest at Lowell cemetery with Rev F. Stratton presiding. Katie Augusta McLean formerly of Lowell Bleachery died at 23. high mass by Rev Fr Mec Rory with burial in Catholic cemetery. bearers listed. Rogers undertaker in charge.
Representative James P. Ramsay has been elected clerk of the public service legislative committee. Editor Aime Gauthier of L EtoHe has returned from a brief Canada visit. Mrs Geo Hedrick is seriously ill with anxious prognosis. Henry J Mailloux lost many valued items after his Pelham house burned. his citizenship certificate was destroyed and later replaced with a new naturalization record dated Novy 9, 1891.
In this city on January 12 and 13, three children and a young wife are listed among the deceased. H Alberta Perley, 28, widow of Geo E Perley, died January 13 at number F Varney street. John Kerwin aged 6, died January 12 at 26 Wall street. John Shea, ages 5 years 8 months, died January 13 at the home of his parents Patrick and Mary Shea 151 Lake View avenue. Funeral Friday afternoon.
