Emanuel Ross, a Natick, Rhode Island grocer who vanished three months ago, was found dead at the Hopkins Hotel in Providence on Sunday morning. After his disappearance he traveled to San Francisco briefly, returned east, and recently told a Providence bartender he planned to kill himself. He died from a self-inflicted shot to the right temple, leaving a note claiming his wife and child were dead and she had joined them.
Moses How former Haverhill mayor dies at his home aged 78. A former leading shoe manufacturer he retired six years ago. He served on the Governor's council for three years and on the state ballot commission for two years.
A Venezuela World Copyrighted special from Merida reports an anti English meeting urged the government to immediately close Venezuela ports to British subjects. The event reflects rising tensions as authorities weigh measures affecting foreign nationals and trade.
A Perry Oklahoma Territory report says officers chased a gang of horse thieves led by Jeff Coates. A running gun battle left Coates dead, three companions wounded and captured, one posse member wounded, and two gang members escaped. Sheriff Woods led the pursuit with his men.
In Boston on January 13 Joe Tye, a 44 year old Chinese man, was arrested for the larceny of 14450 the grand prize of a Chinese lottery from 1890. Complainant Jung Fat says he won the prize but Tye, custodian of the money, fled to China with it. Police used clubs to extract him from a crowd of twelve supporters. He claimed a Chinese receipt showed he paid 6000 to Jung Fat and the rest was his commission.
Grand Rapids on January 13. Albert Johnson a 25 year old motorman was shot by fellow boarder G C H Holmes after Holmes returned with a revolver. Five shots were fired, three hit Johnson killing him. Holmes, a civil engineer from a prominent family, surrendered to police.
Bantamweight Frank Macienski is hospitalized after an assault by two men in Cincinnati on January 17. One suspect threw lye in his eyes, risking permanent blindness. Macienski had defeated local lightweights and drawn with Billy Murphy twice.
Wichita Falls Texas reports Lieut Sullivan and a body of Texas state rangers head to capture the noted desperado Bill Doolin who is said to be badly wounded after a recent clash and lying concealed in a dug out as pursuit continues.
Havana authorities were stirred by rumors of insurgents marching on the city last night. Investigation showed the alert stemmed from a torpedo explosion in Dedado, a nearby village, with the cause still unclear.
An unidentified man was struck and killed by a southbound New York and New England Railroad train in Providence this morning. Local authorities were investigating the incident as a fatal railroad accident.
Advices from Canada say the survivors are fairing fairly well. Second Officer Thomas is the worst sufferer with severely frozen hands likely to be lost. Government steamer Newfield reached Canso and reports not seeing the other vessel.
Jan 11 Johannesburg Transvaal report that passport restrictions are lifted and campaigning halted while burghers remain under arms near the city. Dr Jameson and officers stay at Pretoria as Sir Walter Heley, Natal Governor, arrives. The high court bars bank balances and property of revolution arrestees. Journalist Jetty of Ritter’s News Agency is released after detention.
Cecil Rhodes cites Capetown dispatch noting 70,000 newcomers and 14,000 old inhabitants in the Transvaal. With gold development, newcomers could reach 500,000 in five years and a million eventually. He argues for immediate civil rights for the new population and highlights Americans as mine managers amid Anglo tensions over South American land.

In Saco Maine on January 11 a verdict found Rev John D Waldron guilty of conniving to induce Mrs Marty J Frost to sign a confession of authorship of anonymous letters causing trouble in West Buxton in 1894 Damages of 500 were awarded The other three defendants I A Smith Cyrus F Davis and Leroy McCorrison were acquitted
The Cunard steamship Cephalonia, afloat again after grounding at South Stack near Holyhead, had sailed from Boston December 21 and struck a rock early on New Year’s Day. Tug boats and pontoons aided in freeing her, then she was beached to prevent sinking at the harbor’s upper end.
London January 12 Sir Claude McDonald has been named British minister to Pekin replacing Sir M R O Connor who becomes ambassador to St Petersburg in a reshuffle of diplomatic posts.
In Chelmsford on Sunday January 13, 29 people faced the police court. Several were fined for drunkenness. others received sentences to state farm or jail. Notable cases include a boy Alexander Morin warned, Daniel Curtin sent to the state farm, and John J. Tracy jailed after pleading guilty. At the Unitarian church Rev. M O Simons preached on faith and reason. The Unitarian Guild annual meeting elected a board: President William H Hall, Vice President Thomas Parkhurst, Secretary Kiva Hutchins, Treasurer Hawthorne Howard.
Trustees approve H M Francis plan for a two story red brick academy with granite trim and separate entrances for boys and girls. Main floor houses classrooms and trustees room, second floor a large school room and labs, third floor a gym and dressing rooms. Allan Cameron donates two acres on Main Street. Building aims for occupancy by September 1.
Judge Hadley declared that foreigners must respect laws or leave as Sun day card players arrested by Officer Wiley in the Lawrence corporation were fined five dollars. Fifteen more from Sergt Palmer and Officer Fo in Suffolk street pleaded guilty for being at a card game. Half the group were 17 or 18 years old. A Greek priest acted as interpreter and relayed the judge’s demand to obey the law. The fines were paid.
The Democratic city committee filed its report of receipts and expenditures for the municipal campaign. Receipts totaled 976.25 from numerous donors including William F Courtney William F Kirby Fisher H Pearson John J Burns and others. expenditures reached 970.64 mainly for headquarters rent clerk hire and voter turnout.
Rev. Frederick Harland Page, former assistant at Union Congregational Boston, resigns to accept a call from Trinity Congregational Lawrence. He will succeed Rev. Mr. Keese, of Lowell, who died last September of typhoid fever. Page, 35, born in Haverhill, long a newspaper man, trained under Curtis Guild on the Commercial Bulletin, later editor of the Advertiser before entering the ministry.
The D. L. Page company in Lowell leads a wholesale push into a new carrying trade with a Tinkham tricycle. The two rear wheels hold a cabinet for merchandise, enabling swift service. In England the model is popular with over 100,000 in use, and W. P. Brazer & Co. will exhibit one as exclusive Lowell agents.
A review was held in Krugersdorp of 6000 burghers who have been in the field. They appeared in fine force, well mounted and armed. There is strong feeling against the Uitlanders, but it is believed the burghers will be disbanded on Monday.
London Jan 12 Gladstone replies to a Chronicle telegram from Piarritz stating his opinion on arbitration remains unchanged but he cannot usefully appear in a public discussion at this moment. The message signals continued support for arbitration while avoiding public debate.
Cape Town January 12 Charles Leonard chairman of the Transvaal National Union was arrested yesterday at Seapoint a coastal suburb of Cape Town.
Three Congregational churches yesterday heard reports of the past year and found encouragement in the figures. Other churches had routine services, but Evangelist Needham held noteworthy meetings. Reports of various services follow.
Rev George H Johnson preached on blessed are the pure in heart explaining how the heart may be cleansed by divine grace and Jesus blood. The evening session reported church work with membership at 225, new classes formed, and record-high missions collections.
The annual church meeting in the vestry was led by Deacon O A Merrill. Deacon Andrew Liddell read his report showing 85 new members, 74 by probation and letter. 11 deaths. 21 non residents. 40 removed. Total membership Jan 1 1896 was 905 with 283 males and 672 females. About 200 non residents. Infants baptized 13 and adults 42. Died: Jessie Abbott Martha Stott Louisa Hill Elmer A Baird Charles Freeman Catherine McKee Lavina Miller Carrie Shaw Nettie Gordon Harriet Graves Annie French BF W Fletcher chaired the church committee and reviewed yearly condition, officers, services, prayer and youth activities. Kimball reported 632 pupils in Sunday school with 538 in adults, 93 in infant, 140 in juvenile. school collections gas expenditure 291.95 balance. Mention made of resignations of Miss Harlow and Bertha Wood.

High Street reports annual results and elects I. N. Chase as superintendent replacing E. W. Clark who was not eligible for re election. Carl D. Burtt becomes assistant superintendent with W. F. E. Kezer secretary and S. N. Wood treasurer. Auditors chosen as Deacon Samuel A. Chase and C. W. Marshall. Committees named for music library charity with several members listed and sewing meeting set for Tuesday at 2 PM.

He cites a Zacharias text Is not our s a brand plucked out of the fire and outlines union meeting arrangements at Paige street and First Baptist churches with Bible lectures in the afternoons and a Sunday school lesson at the Y M C A.
Rev Dr Court preached from 1 Timothy 1 15 at First Presbyterian. He argued the word came means math and that Christ existed before coming. By coming he bore humanity and endured condemnation as he was under the law.
