Lawrence January 13 John O Batters hill takes over as city streets superintendent by mayoral transfer. He declares all positions vacant then hires a new staff led by foreman William Paisley replacing John Mc Carthy, adding six teamsters and four cesspool men while retaining current workers. D C O Sullivan remains clerk and John Sheehan with Hubert Finn as foremen.
John McCarthy, drinking earlier, attacked his wife at 285 Common Street in Lawrence this afternoon around 5 o clock. He drew a razor after she refused him money, slashing her and was arrested by Inspector Rennick for assault with a dangerous weapon. Her condition may prompt upgrading the charge.
A Boston fruit steamer sank after disaster claiming the lives of nine sailors. Rescue efforts were mounted by nearby vessels and coastal authorities investigated the wreckage to determine the cause and any salvaged cargo or survivors.
The Gloucester schooner Fortuna was sunk after colliding with the Boston fruit steamer Barnstable off Highland Light at about 7:30 PM. Nine sailors drowned, fourteen saved. Captain Greenlaw and crew of 23 aboard. Survivors say visibility hazy, Fortuna attempted to swing clear, strike forward, then sank within four minutes. The Fortuna belonged to Gloucester and was 116 tons, in its first year of service.
Chicago authorities deny Peter Hougard asphyxiating his wife and five children. James Hansen now suspected as the planner of the deadly act, with reports that the deed was carefully prepared.
Des Moines Iowa January 14 Senator Allison arriving from Washington denies reports of a rift with his Iowa managers and says there is no disagreement to report.
Port Jervis wire recalls a herd in Deposit Broome county where 59 cows testing tuberculosis were killed. Devereaux's son recently died of consumption, and two butter makers who drank milk from the herd are ill. In Crawford Orange county 34 cows and two bulls from Irving Col Comfort’s herd were also killed for tuberculosis signs.

Five Lowell National banks convened for their annual sessions this forenoon, with results listed. Directors across First National, Appleton National, Prescott National, Merchants National, and Railroad National Banks were elected. The group unanimously re elected E. T. Rowell as president.
After five people were released on charges of drunkenness in police court several were fined for like offences. Mary Dube received one year at Sherborn and Mary Manning ten months at state farm. Laurent Bernier was continued until tomorrow under $200 after assaulting his cousin Mrs Elise Gagnon. Michael Gibbons and his wife Mary were convicted of illegally keeping liquor at their Adams street home on Sunday and fined. they appealed. The man paid $50 and the wife $75.
George H. Manotte was found unconscious in his room at 10 Tyler street by a servant. Dr. Holbrook revived him and he was sent to St. John's hospital where he stated he took a mixture of chlorodyne and morphine to relieve pain. He denied intent to end his life and noted he works for the YMCA in French service and has a Sumter, South Carolina home.
Funeral services for the late Amos Green were held this afternoon by the first Spiritualist society at Welles hall. The program included singing by Mrs. H. A. Bullens, a prayer and poem by Mr. J. O. Perkins, brief remarks by RE. B. Varney, and an address by Mr. A. B. Plimpton praising Green's faithful service as treasurer and long dedication to Spiritualism. The remains were placed in the receiving tomb at Chelmsford. Floral offerings were contributed by society members.
Gen Francis C Barrow once attorney general of New York and Civil War officer died in New York City after grip illness. Harvard graduate and Tribune writer, later New York secretary 1865 to 1868, practicing law since 1873. John L Bremer a Boston commission merchant died at 4 Beacon Street aged 71. Known as selling agent for several mills, led to firm name changes, retired 1895, firm liquidated, estimated worth two million dollars.
Paris dispatch reports Sir Blokland, Transvaal representative, saying the Transvaal situation is now satisfactory and that everything will end well.
High water swept out the old ice bridge at Niagara Falls this morning washing away the Canadian dock and part of the American dock. A new bridge is forming and is reported larger than the first.
Police report a break in at a Polish boarding house on 27 Common Street this afternoon. Stolen items valued at about $200 include clothing jewelry money and other valuables.

A blaze at the old Boston and Maine freight house near Central street damaged 200 bales of Hamilton company cotton stored in the 1100 bale stock. Fire started mid building and spread along the cotton surface. firefighters and Hamilton mill overseers worked hours to wet and shift bales. Insurance on the stock is held by H. C. Church & Son.
The alarm from box 113 at 9 25 last night sent the department to the Holbrook boarding house on John street where a lamp was overturned and started a fire in a closet but only minimal damage occurred.
A dozen local horse fanciers gathered on Andover Street for lively afternoon races. Ex-Mayor Palmer drove a young horse against I. C. Bean steering John H. and Henry Wheeler guiding David Wilkes. Other riders included Dr. C. R. Wood, Hugh Green, John Jessop, Thomas Lennon and Dr. A. H. McCann.
Eugene I Hodge aged 20 and his brother Gilbert 16 were arrested after police traced stolen print cloth towelling and robes from Merrimack mill and Chelmsford deliveries. Eugene admitted stealing cases of prints and nails totaling over $100 in value while selling goods through A G Pollard Co. and partners. Gilbert faced charges for receiving stolen goods as the ring expanded across Lit tleton Acton Chelmsford and surrounding towns.

An adjourned meeting of the Chelmsford Social Library Proprietors chose officers led by Clerk Albert H. Davis and Treasurer Mrs Eben T. Adams. A committee was named to transfer two legacies to town trustees and dissolve the society’s corporate role as books move to the public library.
