A playful snowball fight turns sour as a girl aims at a boy who catches the snowball on his cheek. The male sibling, a tall baseball pitcher, watches the scene and afterward smiles. Harlem Life notes a mix of jokes and local chatter about Hoar, Platt, and railway fears.
Thomas Daley 25 of Somerville was struck crossing railroad tracks at Perkins Street Charlestown and lost a leg with severe head injuries. Hieronemus Maurer 55 of Hyde Park was killed by a New England train after leaving Universal loom works Readville with skull fractures and other bruises, leaving a widow and six children.
Patrick Casey died at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence from a head wound hemorrhage inflicted when Patrolman William H. Place clubbed him to save Patrolman William S. Kent. A week earlier Casey had attacked Kent with a revolver, shooting him in three places. Casey was shot in the head but died from the hemorrhage caused by the club.
Hon. Joseph G. Ray reports a letter from Senator Hoar on the Philippines question. Hoar says he will aid islanders in choosing their preferred government and then withdraw, aiding the inhabitants to establish their form of rule.
Gen. Wood, military governor of Santiago, traveled aboard the transport Mississippi to Washington. He reported some dissatisfaction at Santiago but nothing serious, noting organized schools, a thousand miles of roads built, and higher customs receipts paid into the Spanish treasury. He said funds exist to pay provincial administration expenses and only army costs fall to the United States. Wood is in excellent health.
New York reports that 16 victims were identified from the West Dunellen collision with Lehigh Valley trains yesterday. Three died in the night, two unidentified men and one woman remain among the injured. Seventeen stayed at the hospital, two in critical condition, others stable.
The Supreme Court denied the petition of Senator M S Quay his son and ex State Treasurer Haywood for a writ of certiorari to move the conspiracy trial to the Supreme Court. The case is remanded to the quarter Sessions Court of Philadelphia with costs charged to the petitioners.
Washington January 10 Mr Dingley’s condition is unchanged this morning. Little hope of recovery is held out. He is in an extremely feeble condition, aggravated by a general infection of the system with pneumonia, making the outcome very doubtful. He is conscious only at intervals.
Gunboat Yorktown departs San Francisco today for Manila under full steam. She carries complete instructions to Admiral Dewey and General Otis concerning the Philippines situation.
Madrid January 10. Responding to a dispatch from General Rios the Spanish war minister demands the release of Spanish prisoners held by Philippine rebels in the field.
A bank run in Concord on January 9 frightened out of town depositors over a rumor the Middlesex Institution of Savings held Assabet Manufacturing paper. The bank, which did not hold such paper, paid all in full and did not seek thirty days' notice. The bank is among the oldest in the state, incorporated over a century ago.
Trustees including Samuel Hoar and Henry J. Hosmer address town uproar over alleged bank losses. Hoar is abroad while Hosmer confirms the Middlesex Institution for Savings and Concord National Bank hold no papers of the concerned concern. He says all demands met today and the bank will continue to meet them.
Arthur Lord and A. S. Wentworth receivers at 60 State Street Boston distribute about 200000 in dividends to holders with death policies prior to August 17 1897 and a few predated disability claims.
Mr Erdie T Swift of Reading formerly a leading Charlestown lawyer died at 88 on Sunday. Born January 8 1811 in Corinth Vermont he moved to Charlestown in 1830 and later practiced law since 1858. He served as chief of police several times and held council seats before moving to Reading 20 years ago to live with his only child Mrs D M Houghton.
The John Street Congregational church and society held its annual meeting Monday evening with supper under Mrs. A. K. Whitcomb. Rev. George H. Johnson led, officers re elected include Clerk W. H. G. Wight Treasurer William Morey Sunday school Superintendent W. H. G. Wight and standing committee Dr. S. G. Bailey J. J. Judkins Mrs. C. H. Chadwick Miss M. Leslie Allen. John Osgood re elected deacon for three years. Society meeting followed with F. W. Qua presiding and John A. Osgood as clerk. Officers of last year re elected: Assessors James Gibson William A. Hayward treasurer and collector John J. Bancroft Jr Standing committee John C. Osgood Thomas Collins W. H. G. Wight Frank Morey C. H. Chadwick. Reports read and accepted.
At the Chelmsford Street F B society annual meeting officers were elected including Clerk W H Harris Treasurer Albert Grant Collector BE L Gray and trustees J K Grant A L Russell O A Draper E L Gray Auditing committee Harry Kittredge Walter Chase. M V B Perkins who had served 13 years as treasurer declined renomination due to poor health. The society accepted the pastor Rev H Lockhart's resignation.
The Mason Safety Tread company secures orders to equip eight cars of the Lowell, Lawrence and Haverhill street railway with brass treads and receives additional contracts for tread equipment for three large steamships and for the battleships Kearsarge and Kentucky to be shipped to Newport News, with the Indiana recently fitted out with treads.
Ortho Pennock of Washington DC testifies Hood's Sarsaparilla and Hood's Pills cured his grip after repeated winters causing weakness and dizziness. He reports no recurrence since using the products and notes his improved health and flesh. The ad promotes Hood's Sarsaparilla as America's greatest medicine available from druggists for $1.
Rumors swirl at city hall as aldermen prepare for tonight's meeting. Reports differ on attendance of Gen Dimon and Lieut McNulty due to illness. Republicans discuss potential appointments to public buildings and city messenger posts, while Lorenzo Smith supporters push for messenger role. Mayor Crowley to receive committee lineup, Paige to present. Cemetery trustees seek annual appropriation talks, with Penn requesting a cemetery trustees meeting. The cemetery chief remains a holdover from Mayor Fifield. Auditor urges electing a member of the accounts committee tonight. Lawrence board of health links typhoid spread to Merrimack river questions, noting Lowell has had no cases this year.
Bank directors were reaffirmed across Merchants National, Railroad National, Prescott National and Appleton banks. Re-elections included Pollard, Ayer, Rowell, Fifield, Pickering, and Parker among others as presidents and vice presidents were confirmed. the Appleton and First National banks named continued boards for 1899.
The Traders and Mechanics Insurance company held its annual meeting led by Mr. Levi Sprague. Reports showed assets of 720,534.50 with liabilities 35,087.26 and net surplus 361,447.24. losses paid 72,000 and dividends to policy holders 104,000. Officers re elected included president Levi Sprague and secretary FE. M. Tucke.
The following board was chosen for three years: Charles Hutchinson, Charles H. Coburn, Edward M. Tucker, J. Tyler Stevens, Jacob Rogers, Levi Sprague, George F. Richardson and Frank P. Putnam. Walter H. Howe was elected for two years in place of his deceased father.
The eighth week of the Hast Merrimack street alley tournament shows little change in team positions since mid November. Favorites lead with 901 as a high team single, while individual scores include Hennessey 526 in three strings and Lyons 210 in a single string. Standings list Lyons Tigers at 159, Fee Favorites 156, Lyons Defenders 15354, and others with averages 140 or higher.
Prosper Cossette and Mary Louise Perron married in a quiet ceremony at the parochial residence on Merrimack Street yesterday morning at seven. Rev Fr Perron assisted. Attendants were the bridegroom’s father and the bride's brother. A breakfast followed at the bride’s parents’ Moody Street home. The couple will live on Merrimack Street after a short wedding tour.
H. J. Martel, Rice & Co.'s overseer, celebrated. A daughter born to Mr. and Mrs. Finley Monroe of Los Angeles, Mrs. Monroe formerly Miss Barbara Gordon from the Spindle City. Fred E. Medina returns to Bellevue hospital college after a pleasant vacation with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Medina. Miss Bessie Moore of North Chelmsford remains absent from school due to illness since holidays. Mr. Arnold Daly, actor in Because She Loved Him So, visits Rev. C. E. Fisher while in the city. Daly also played in Arabian Nights for Highland club two years ago. Thomas H. Connell, contractor, a patient at St. John's hospital, shows rapid improvement. British American association elects officers: President Joseph Harrison, Vice President John Barnes, Recording Secretary G. F. Humphries, Financial Secretary Fred Harrison, Treasurer Charles Jenkins, Guard William Liddle, Delegate G. F. Humphries. By-laws laid over. concert and ball planned for St. Valentine’s Eve.
Samuel Griffin Parker born March 18 1820 in Nelson New Hampshire died Monday morning in Lowell. A cautious honest man he built a notable career in the meat and soda-water trades and shipping New England apples abroad. He married Sarah Stevens in 1844 and left four daughters. He lived at a Belmont avenue home and owned the Indian Head hotel with Col. Scripture in Nashua. Funeral Thursday at 11 a.m. at his house.
