John Cockerton and William Aylott received the same sentence after pleading guilty to criminal libel on the Earl. Trials included sensational moments as Judge Hawkins called Lady Scott the origin of the Earl’s unhappiness and her response drew court tension.
The night fires claimed Edward Fenton at Hunter's farm in Carbetton Ontario and burned Christopher C. Harris's home in Tuxedo Park Missouri. Debris show losses at 25000 insured. Frederick Bauman in Louisville admits killing Frank P. Arbuckle in New York last November. Brayton, a drowned man in Norwich Connecticut, left a widow and two children. Orrin Dockman at Togus Soldier's Home died by his own action in Maine after drinking. Anna Driscoll was attacked on Fifth Avenue by Harry Chatfield who attempted to steal her purse. he is the son of a lawyer. W B Parker of Buford & George admits embezzling 5000 over two years in Kansas City. Oscar Hammerstein transfers to wife and son spark a receiver. Hammerstein's Olympia sale interest noted at 3 million by English syndicate. Frank Snell found dead at Waukesha Wisconsin. fate unclear if poison or natural causes.
Sing Sing prison inmate Frederick Hoffman attempted self harm by leaping from a 75 foot railing after expressing fear his mind would break without work. He landed fatally, amid state abolishment of prison labor statewide January 1.
Sumter South Carolina January 8 Simon Cooper the man who killed five people here last week was found in a friend's house five miles from Sumter this morning. He is well armed and making a fight. A small cannon has been secured but no ammunition so it will be loaded with bolts and nuts. If caught alive Cooper will be lynched.
W C Creede the Creede Colorado mining magnate separated from his wife in Los Angeles announced plans to sue for divorce on the grounds of desertion. The note links Creede to the town named after him, Creede, Cal., and places the action in January.
Bombay reports severe plague exodus reducing population by about one half. Weekly mortality runs at 200 per thousand as the city grapples with ongoing health crisis.
Funeral services were held for James Queenan Francis Donnelly Alice Rose Marten and others. Rev Fr Burke Dacey McManus and Nolin officiated. Burials occurred at Catholic or St Joseph cemeteries with various undertakers in charge The obituaries note gatherings, attendance and pallbearers.
In Haverhill a Currier block bakery fire caused about 4000 damage after an overheated oven failed. Roxbury resident Mrs Anna M Oddy was seriously injured when run over by a hose carriage en route to a fire. The Massachusetts Single Tax league held a Boston dinner with Thomas A Shearman as principal speaker. Haverhill official Harlan B Eastman suffered a partial paralytic shock in Lawrence. Worcester Catholic Lyceum banquet honored Dr Thomas J Conaty who was made life member with a diamond badge. Boston police raided a gambling house in the South End. an escapee leaped from a window and fled before officers could act.
Michael Collins of Collinsville, after a recent hospital visit, suffered a bad turn Wednesday night and was admitted to the Corporation hospital. His illness led Collins mills to shut down today for an indefinite period, awaiting his condition.
City Hall procurement center under the purchasing agent fuels talks of hay orders and small wares while 30 clerical candidates vie for positions and Harry E. Murray acts as temporary clerk. Chief Hosmer reports annual fire losses totaling 2.1 million with 379 alarms, and water department revenue rose by 9284 with 12000 in new charges. 300 water services yearly.
The lands and buildings department must requisition through Clerk Kidder for Mayor to sign. Officially his honor does not recognize Supt. Varnum. A special Aldermen meeting is expected Tuesday night.
Creditors of Frederick G. Mitchell met in East Cambridge and admitted several new claims the largest at 4000 dollars. Mitchell offered to pay 50 cents on the dollar. Judge Fowler presided as an advisory committee of Harvey Ainsley Burke, with the sheriff, was appointed to work with the panel. The meeting adjourned to January 21 to consider the offer.
Mystic Conn Jan 8 It is reported that Cuban sympathizers plan to buy two steamers at auction January 19 by executors of Samuel Brown estate. The vessels are valued at seventy thousand dollars.
A busy Police court session heard five youths aged 17 to 19 charged with multiple break ins at stores from Oct to Dec. Belanger Germain Ducharme and Borasso pled or faced charges with various bail amounts totaling 1800. Additional minor cases included several individuals fined or jailed for assault and related offenses.
A frightened animal with a buggy attached ran along Central Street this morning at eleven o'clock. A crowd watched as the creature passed Tower's Corner and dallied briefly before speeding up the hill. The owner remains unknown.
The St John’s church group named officers for the coming term. First vice president is George H. Walker, second vice president Herbert L. Bishop, secretary Harriet Greene, and treasurer Heaton Binns.

A Memorial hall audience heard Capt. Charles B. Dahlgren recount the Dahlgren gun's role in U S naval history. He noted its stability and accuracy, cited key Civil War battles, and described the gun’s manufacture and testing from 1836 onward.

The Vesper Country club janitor on Tyngs island plans an outdoor artificial ice polo rink by building an embankment around level ground and repeatedly sprinkling with water to form a solid ice field. He hopes weather will not halt the project before leveling.
Hiram Lewis of Merrimack Street was thrown from a carriage on New Boston Road Wednesday night. His female companion was also thrown out as the horse frightened and ran away, overturning the buggy. The occupants escaped serious injury, but the buggy was wrecked.
The final special meeting this week at the Y M C A is conducted by Rev. F K Stratton. The topic is Home Missionaries. Time is 3 30 p m. Everyone is invited.
