The jury failed to reach a verdict in the $30,000 damages case J. J. Redmond versus Butler et al. announced in Cambridge before Judge Bell. This marks the fourth trial in the matter arising from an injury at the United States Camrridges factory, with rulings and novel circumstances noted during the proceedings.
In a city in the fall of 1891 a man named Redmond suffered severe injuries after pouring scrap lead into molten lead, causing an explosion. He faced a $30,000 suit against the Cartridge company as defense argued prior instruction and promised light work. The case zigzagged through trials and appeals, with Dunbar leading for the plaintiff in the final trial and Boston lawyers for the defense.
New York January 4. On Calvin S Brice death the surrogate records show a personal estate of 600000 with no real property. He had lived at 693 Fifth Avenue with a spending rate of about 200000 yearly and invested mostly in railroads. Mrs Catherine Olivia Brice is named administratrix with Stewart M Helen O Margaret K Walter Kirkwood and John Francis Brice as heirs.

Arthur Freeman of Chelmsford employed at Stover's shoe factory ran a leather splitting machine and pushed the leather too far. The knives split three fingers of his left hand, a workman heard his cry and stopped the machinery. He was taken to Lowell hospital and amputation is not expected, though he endures much pain.

Alfred Welch, employed by Daniel Gage, was hurt at Forge Village when a loading platform fell and crushed him. He was brought by ambulance to Lowell Hospital, then returned home before being moved again as his condition worsened. Doctors hope for a recovery.
The Ladies of Charity of St. John's hospital hold their first meeting under new rules at the Y M C A hall on Stackpole Street. It is the regular monthly gathering with social features, music, light refreshments, and an expected large attendance after business is transacted.

Van Volkingburgh found guilty of larceny watch valued at twenty dollars and sentenced to Massachusetts reformatory.
The Volunteer Aid association met at the Ministry-at-Large to arrange a closing session for general work. A date will be set later with reports to be heard. Mrs. H C Fuller Mrs J W Bennett Mrs George C Wright and President Mrs H M Thompson lead the committee. Mr Salmon secured work for 14 soldiers and turkey aid reached 20 families at Christmas. One hospital soldier memory was reported and Joseph Delorme has sailed home from Porto Rico.
The physical examination of Company C men at the armory, delayed because the surgeon was absent, will now occur Friday by order of Major Maguire. The armory buzzes with activities while some soldiers fall ill or recover. Privates Crowell and Waugh remain sidelined, with Crowell at St John’s hospital and Waugh slowly improving at home. Fred H Pearson donated two large photographs to Company C and G for display at the armory.

Matthew Morning of North Chelmsford died at home from consumption aged 42. He was a Scottish native, an engineer by trade, and married. Ill for about two years. Burial at North Grafton. John Dowling died last night at 505 Gorham Street aged 71. Longtime Lowell resident, 45 years here. A wife survives him.
The funeral for Inez A Mowe was held Tuesday at 2 PM from 520 Varnum avenue. Rev George Fr Kenngett presided. Pallbearers named Arthur Marshall, George F Willey, James Howard and Frank Corey. A second funeral for Hannah Page Holkten followed from 46 Race street at 2 PM with Rev Smith Thomas Ford conducting and hymns sung by Mrs Walter Merritt. grandsons served as bearers.
