The Supreme Court finds the 1895 statute unconstitutional as it alters prisoners’ rights for good behavior credits and liberty time, applying retroactively to offenses before its enactment. A conference between Mayor Crowley and Supt Doherty announces progress on Huntington hall reconstruction. About $5000 spent, $4000 for roof work by a railroad firm. It was nearly 10.30 o'clock before court began this morning. There were no cases of importance, all being drunks. Henry Drury was released and the other three John Kneafsey John Williams and John H Powers were each fined 1. Powers is an old offender and was only released from the State farm last September. He has not been in Lowell since until Wednesday and he pleaded for leniency saying he had work to go to in Fitchburg. The court allowed him to go on a light fine.
At the annual stockholders meeting of the Boston & Lowell Railroad company, directors Frederick E. Clarke Edwin Morey William Powell Mason Charles T Cotting T Jefferson Coolidge Walter C Baylis and George A Gardner were re elected. Bond issue approved totaling 620000 dollars. The year shows income from revital 876216 expenses 7000 interest 346864 and dividends 522252.
Thomas Hixon a boarder at 27 Warren Street and employee at the Union brass foundry on Wortham Street suffered two rib fractures this morning when a barrel rolled into him in the foundry cellar. He was taken by ambulance to St. John's hospital and after treatment walked home.
The dwelling policy owned by Thomas Nesmith has been settled by Nicholas G. Norcross who placed the entire coverage. Contents insurance, arranged through Nicholas G. Norcross and H. C. Church & Son, is in the process of adjustment by those agents.
A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Geo H Stevens at noon yesterday as part of a district society update. Newly registered residents in New York include St Denis and P R Warren among others while Hon Frank D Currier, speaker of the New Hampshire House, is noted for his schooling in local schools.
Death notices from this city report Martin Grady son of William and Margaret Grady aged years, Annie Riley daughter of Thomas and Mary Riley aged four, Mrs Franklin Martin aged 84, Mrs Mary Knowles wife of Isaac Knowles aged 69 years 8 months 18 days, and Mrs E P Wilson aged 73, with details of dates and addresses for each.
Charles B. Wilson and Mary Stewart of Lowell wed at Central M. E. Church on December 31. The ceremony was performed by Rev. W. H. Meredith at 37 Eleventh Street address noted.
Mr. R. H. Tyler found a striped snake a foot and a half long at Atherton in the morning. He killed it and brought it to the city, claiming it is a sign of an open winter.
