Special to the Courier reports Hon. George Fred Williams filing a writ of mandamus in the Supreme court to stop the Fanueil Hall convention members from seating on the Democratic State Central committee. A hearing is set in two weeks as the committee meets with four guards at headquarters. Many members doubt Williams’s tactics as a publicity move.
Chicago on January 2 reports that nearly every oat meal and cereal mill in the United States has joined a trust agreement to regulate production and prices of breakfast cereals. The move signals a broad industry accord aimed at stabilizing the market and preventing price wars.
In Rockland Maine the special election approved a 5000 bequest from the late Hon Joseph Farwell of Unity to be held in trust by the city with income used for benevolent church purposes. A Boston bowling meeting defined a professional bowler as one who bowls for pay or salary, declaring no current professionals exist. Managers owners or alley employees are not considered professionals, aligning with the New York bowling congress. President Charles Dolan led 17 delegates in the decision.

Norcross Bros. of Worcester, famed contractors and builders, dissolved Friday by mutual consent. The firm, consisting of O. W. and J. A. Norcross, will continue as O. W. Norcross. They built the Ames building and Exchange building in Boston, Trinity church, and several other large structures, and are currently constructing the State Mutual block and Worcester City Hall.
Six Black men were arrested Friday for the murder of Capt. Miller, proprietor of the Southern Pacific hotel at Milan Tennessee. His body was found in an unused bar room with his head beaten in. If proof of guilt is obtained the men will probably be lynched.
Joseph Salois, an 81 year old French Canadian, was buried in Lawrence on Tuesday. He left 126 descendants including children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was married once, his wife having died a few years earlier. The 12 children averaged 12 offspring each in their families.
Halifax reports 1896 coal shipments from Cape Breton collieries reached 1 052 000 tons for Dominion Coal company, up 177 570 from 1895. General Mining Association led single mine output at Old Sydney with 278 000 tons, surpassing all prior records, with Reserve mine next in total.
Chief M. J. Ryan of the Norfolk fire department was shot five times by Assistant Chief Frank Wood on Friday. One bullet struck his back and another his right thigh. Wood had been reported for drunkenness as Mayor Mayo prepared to suspend him when the shooting occurred.

Rev. O. H. Denney presided at the Mt. Vernon church annual meeting last night. W. H. Kimball was re elected clerk and W. O. Coram treasurer. Several committees were appointed. It was voted to hold revival services during the coming week.

Funeral services were held for Marine Burns Newcombe in the cemetery chapel yesterday at 2 30 o clock. Undertaker directed the interment in the cemetery.
