Portland Maine February 7 an explosion demolished part of the Oriental powder mills at Newhall injuring no bystanders but blowing to atoms two employees J C Ross 35 married and Thomas Field widower with four children. The two men were the only ones nearby and the cause will never be known. The blast shattered glass for miles and caused about 3000 in damage.
New York February 6 The Journal reports J Pierpont Morgan and associates have gained full control of the Carnegie steel company in a secret settlement completed Monday The deal places Morgan and partners including the Rockefellers as owners while Carnegie cashes out with about 140 million dollars for his stake The move aims to bring peace to the steel industry and Morgan has been influential in Federal Steel American Bridge and National Tube companies
Control of the American steel and wire company and allied firms has shifted to Morgan interests after long efforts to gain Carnegie company influence failed. The merger aims at economies in manufacturing, pooling work, and reducing operating costs. Carnegie declined to comment, while Schwab could not be seen and Schoen remained in the city. Stock strength appeared across steel issues.
Theodorio Carranza a wealthy Spanish merchant and hemp buyer was arrested in Manila on charges of supplying copra and clothing for insurgent use and paying insurgent assessments. New York February 7 The approval of the city officials was given yesterday to Battery park as the site for a naval arch to commemorate the deeds of valor by the U S sailors. Mayor Van Wyck gave his approval of the site selected by a committee of the Naval academy alumni association and he said that 1000000 should be raised for such a purpose.
In Sudbury the Old Maids' Convention was moved from Tuesday to Wednesday evening February 13 due to impassable roads after a heavy snowstorm. The storm dropped at least 12 inches of snow, drifting in northern and southern routes, delaying travel and causing no school. Selectmen drew Geo W. Gilman and James Tulis as jurors. illnesses with the grip are widespread.

The police court list was short this morning. Patrick H Fallon, an old offender, was sentenced to the State farm. Fred E Pettis pleaded guilty to larceny of clippers from Peter Watson and a hammer from Everett F E Nichols. Pettis had sold the clippers to Joseph Mullen, pawnbroker, and the hammer to George S Griggs in John street. He had been drinking heavily to raise money for rum. Pettis fined 10 dollars to be paid in five months. Probation six months. John Reynolds, who neglected his children since May 1, pleaded guilty. His sister testified against him. Reynolds fined 20 dollars to be paid to the sister over six months. He promised to quit drinking and become industrious. Hugh McHill fined 2 dollars for drunkenness.
The regular Pawtucket church social occurred Wednesday in the vestry with supper and games. A list of young women in charge is provided. The Worthen Street Baptist junior group hosted a separate vestry social with a 5:30 refreshment break and a linked program featuring readings music and sketches led by Miss Ada Reed and Rev. C R McNally. The appropriations committee planned an afternoon visit to the city farm to study requests.
