In Rumford Falls Maine a fight among Italian laborers left Carlo Vello dead and Francis co Nicolozzo fatally injured. Nicolozzo barricaded others in a shanty and was arrested after Vello’s death and Nicolozzo’s skull fracture.
South Norwalk December 26 Work began today on the Starm line steamer Erastus Corning wrecked on Copp's island off this harbor by the Merritt Chapman Wrecking company. A bulk head will be built around the bow to cut away the jagged rock and float the ship to New York in four days. The wreckers do not consider the vessel seriously damaged. The cargo has been lightered by the Stalin company. A thick snowstorm began today but the sea remained calm.
Hopkinsville Kentucky December 26. Threats of mob violence have grown over two days. Nine negroes charged with murder have been spirited away to Madisonville for safekeeping. They face murder and mutilation charges in an unknown man’s death a week ago. One prisoner confessed the stranger was murdered and robbed by himself and companions.
Washington December 27 Stephen Valla and John A Gleason were today appointed postmasters at Alexandria and Dublin New Hampshire respectively.
London Dec 26. Japan is negotiating to purchase two Chilean warships the armored cruiser Esmeralda and another likely the battleship Capitan Prat. Baron Hayashi said Japan wants more ships as a precaution. no time limit on Russia's reply is known and talks with other South American governments continue.
Valley Falls R1 December 26. Weavers at Naushon cotton mills halt work after a wage cut and belief cuts of cloth lengthened. New light from Supt Rounds clarifies no extra labor required. workers to return Monday as plant reopens.
In St Louis on December 26 Albert Chambliss a colored man held as a hostage for a confederate was fatally shot by the latter a Negro named Alington who also wounded Patrolman Peter Dolan Alington retreated to a cabin surrounded by a dozen policemen and 200 citizens firing 50 or 60 shots and the police refrained from bombardment due to a Negro girl in the cabin until Alington ran out of ammunition and was arrested.
The body of Sophia Engstron, about 50, a Swedish former cook, was found near a cliff by the William Gammell estate in Newport on December 25. The medical examiner ruled death as suicide by drowning. despondency believed to have caused the act after an illness and operation left her incapacitated.
Geo Calhoun, a Black man, ran amuck in Montgomery on December 26 fatally injuring his wife and wounding four others with a double barrel shotgun. Calhoun fired on the door, then into the house before escaping as bystanders pursued him.
Phoenix December 26 Conti nental Exploration company will form a new corporation to merge mining interests in Colorado and Arizona owned by William K Ryan of New York and associates with several Californians. Ryan is named to be president. The combined properties are valued at about 5 million dollars.
A series of robberies in Pawtucket Rhode Island alarms residents after five highwaymen attack confectioner George A. Baka and his clerks near St Marys cemetery. He resists with a 15 minute struggle and the assailants flee. Edith Bennett and Sarah Cullen report separate encounters on Coyle and Prospect streets demanding money.

The Salvation Army distributed Christmas dinners to 25000 of New York's poor at Grand Central Palace. Starting at 10 o'clock, 6000 baskets for five person families were handed out. In the evening 5000 homeless residents will dine on turkey and sides under Commander Booth Tucker's supervision.
G A Sanders secretary treasurer and chief owner of Pepper Manufacturing drowned in Lake Winnipesaukee near Glendale while on a fishing trip en route to Gilford. His body was found through a hole in the ice. He was 52, a former Laconia city council member, survived by a widow and daughter.
Paris December reports that Rome’s Figaro correspondent confirms the Pope received several millions through Cardinal Gotti held back by the late Pope Leo. The money was invested and a memorandum of investments was transferred to Pope Pius without the actual securities, with denials addressing only that point.

A Denver telegram says he appeared there and proceeded to Boulder to discuss a settlement offer from attorneys for Mrs W K Vanderbilt Jr and Mrs Herman Oelrichs.
A passenger train from Harrisonburg to Washington D C ran into the rear of an extra freight train near Clifton last night injuring five crew members.
J Watte Kearney 26. death reported in New Orleans Louisiana. Kearney served as postmaster of the city and his passing marks a notable local loss.

Telluride Colorado December 26. The striking union miners charged with vagrancy were all released and ordered to work or leave. They have not yet complied with the orders.
In Meyersdale Pennsylvania four striking Slavic families were evicted at Pine Hill after a strike order. Sheriff Coleman witnessed no resistance as Somerset Coal Company moved miners from Elk Lick and Summit into Pine Hill and others. Mines across Wilson Creek Listie Landstreet McDonaldton Niverton Wells Creek and more are back on reduced 65 cent wages with no prior union activity reported.
New York reports January disbursements by railroads banks trusts and traction firms plus government debt interest will total 134 million dollars. The figure is about 3 million more than January 1903 but below the July semi annual total of 136 million. Railroad interest gains were softened by issuers delaying new payments to other times to avoid disturbing the money market.

In the police court this morning Mary Metcalf, 37, of Mammoth Road, was found guilty of shoplifting after a tense hearing. Judge Hadley fined her $15 with an appeal to the superior court. Officer Counihan testified to observing the thefts at Bon Marche and other stores as Metcalf used a Boston bag to conceal items. Metcalf claimed her memory failed and gave varying identities before admitting to some purchases. The case was advanced to the superior court after the fine.
