In thick fog the Erastus Corning of the Starin line struck Copp's island rocks near Norwalk harbor. The steamer settled in 15 feet of water . six passengers left in a small boat, one woman was rescued after jumping overboard. All others reached shore aboard a tug or the vessel. Passengers and crew then traveled to New York, with a full list of names provided by purser E. E. Mathews.

Great send off on his way home from Manila
Governor Taft received an enthusiastic farewell in Manila as a 5000 troops guard escorted him from the palace to the luneta for a review. A civilian procession followed with a dozen bands while thousands lined the route and delegations arrived from outside provinces. Several boats accompanied Taft's launch to the steamer at midnight.

Fire destroys cottage near Bliss Mine road in Newport
Newport firemen responded to a blaze today at a cottage on Bliss Mine road occupied by Arthur W. Potter. With the nearest hydrant over a mile away the efforts were unavailing though the greenhouse and barn nearby were saved. A boy, Arthur Marshall, jumped from the second story to escape. Loss estimated at 6000 dollars, partly insured.
