He leaves a widow and one daughter.
The Hamburg American liner Deutschland arrived at Sandy Hook lightship today after a Cherbourg Mole voyage of 3045 miles in 5 days 12 hours 23 minutes at 23 knots. It marks the fastest westward passage over the shortest route, smashing previous times.
San Francisco residents learn that the $25,000 reward for the Selby Smelting Works bullion theft will not be paid. Detected by investigators and others involved in recovering the treasure and sending robber John Winters to prison received generous compensation.
Whitehall Aug 29 The steamer Ticonderoga of the Champlain Transportation company plying between Baldwin and Caldwell on Lake George was destroyed by fire this morning.
Washington reports President McKinley will appoint William Barrett Ridgley, son-in-law of Senator Cullom, as the new Controller of the Currency to succeed Dawes. Ridgley, though not a Wall Street figure, comes from a banking family and is trained in finance, following a pattern set by Cleveland with Eckels.
Ridgley, long linked with financial ventures, serves as secretary and treasurer of Chicago’s large steel firm that declined to join the trust. He has the support of Senators Cullom and Mason and Controller Dawes, and the President is expected to name him as Dawes’ successor shortly before October 1 when Dawes retires.
In Nashua on August 28 two youths pled guilty to breaking and entering Miss Maria Earley's Allds street store and were held on 700 bonds. Charles E. Greeley a Boston and Maine switchman faced charges of receiving and concealing stolen goods and was ordered to bond for the September superior court term. Police allege he aided thieves and disposed of plunder.
Rev Samuel G Bettes of Yale Michigan was set upon by about 300 workers while lecturing on temperance on the court house esplanade. Police rescued him as a rope gang gathered to hang him. He was beaten and nearly killed, then jailed for safety until reinforcements dispersed the mob.
Mertie Henry and Ida Luce, 16 and 14, who fled the Hallowell girls industrial school, were captured in Gardiner. They tried to jump into the river and one nearly strangled herself after being brought back to the police station. The pair were later returned to the Hallowell institution, declaring they would rather die than be returned.
Rev J H MacDonald warned at Sterling Junction camp meeting that modern life values money and machinery over life and souls. He argued conscience is bent by profits and that pennies in the till drown cries of the wronged and mothers, urging action over expediency to save boys and girls from vice and ruin.
At the Supreme Order of Foresters convention in Baltimore on August 28, T. F. Donahue of Rhode Island was elected chief ranger after 139 ballots, with 83 votes. Other officers elected include W. A. Hogan, H. W. Mace, E. M. McMurtry, Wm. Dage, J. J. Doyle, and Dr. M. S. Clark, with no change decided on.
Invitations read from Rhode Island and Court Mount City No 2 St Louis urged that the next convention be held in Providence or St Louis. The note discusses the ratio of representation and the mode of electing representatives as part of the deliberations.
Officer Markham arrested Fred Melecon on a warrant for larceny after his employer Lang A Merrill reported that 190 dollars entrusted for deposit were missing. Melecon, who had left town, was apprehended on Branch street and booked at the station.
In South Acton Miss Mary Maguire 35 leapt into a brook to save her 5 year old nephew Homer Stone who had fallen in. The swift current swept both downstream and they drowned, despite an effort to rescue them.
Thomas Sullivan street department employee was injured at the city lodge on Fletcher street when a rock blast shattered his right leg in three places. He was rushed to St. John's hospital. Sullivan lives on Broadway street.
Dennis Crowley and Elizabeth E Curley married Wednesday at St Patrick’s parish residence. Fr Calahan officiated with Theresa Martin as bridesmaid and Michael Leary as best man.

Mary Henderson aged 40 was assaulted and killed by William Francis at the Hyatt farm near Columbus Missouri. Francis fled and hundreds search the countryside with his capture and death deemed almost certain. Henderson identified her assailant before dying.
The marine cable from Skagway to Juneau was completed and is now in operation. When the Vancouver to Ashcroft link is built, direct communication from Skagway to Seattle will exist. The signal corps line is permitted for commercial use at seven cents a word by Congress.

In a morning police court session, John Moran was found not guilty of non support for his wife, who has spent years jailed for drunkenness. He faced his wife over her claim of neglect, insisting he would help only if she changed ways. Judge Hadley discharged Moran and released him.
Public schools start September 9 as the department readies for old and new pupils. Janitors finish annual interior washups while 6000 grammar books and other supplies are ordered. Four teachers married over summer. several will be absent next month on leave. some substitute positions may open later in the year.
At the Second regiment annual meeting at The Weirs Elmer R. Fife of Lowell was named to the committee. Capt. J. W. Hough, of the Ninth New Hampshire, now living in North Adams, presented a framed crayon portrait of himself to the Lowell veterans on Wednesday.
Capt. Pitt Moses of the Ninth delivered the presentation. Frank C Wasley, president of the Lowell association, received the gift. Remarks followed from Capt. Babbitt, Captain Wilcox, Captain Hough, and Charles Flanders. The occasion proved very successful.
Paul Hamel of Lowell is jailed in Haverhill on $500 bond charged with stealing $52 from a Chinaman during a scheme to fix water pipes for his laundry in Georgetown, Mass. A young man named Brier is alleged to have aided the theft. Hume, a Lowell hostler, testified about travel and timing, including car trips to Lawrence, Haverhill, and Newburyport.
Supt. Saunders of the city farm received seven inmates from Worcester insane asylum. Declared harmless yet incurable, they were moved to the home institution to cut care costs. The mayor’s office received an unknown menacing request to be sent to the city farm, but no action was taken as the mayor was away.
The Boston Post despatch quotes Judge Charles S Lilley declaring he is not a candidate and has “graduated from politics” He notes Hamlin of Westford as the Democratic possibility in the region with Gaston closely observed Bradford less strong He adds prospects look bright for the Democrats this fall and that Hamlin’s candidacy would leave a favorable impression.

The Franklin Debating Club held its regular meeting in the Shattuck block rooms last night. Two new members were admitted and the resignations of Drain and Chadwick were accepted, making them honorary members. Essays on Life of Jaz by Daniel Dilworth and on Coal by John M. O'Donoghue were read, with recitations by T. J. Sullivan and John Wallace.
Mrs Miller of 148 Hale Street broke her right wrist and bruised a thumb after slipping on stairs while visiting friends on Bellevue Street last night. She was transported to her home by ambulance.
An alarm from box 85 at 1 10 pm reported a minor fire in a house owned by Charles McEvoy at 154 Charles Street. The blaze started from an oil stove left burning. No damage was reported.
