A rail accident near Udine during King Victor Emmanuel’s visit to the grand army manoeuvres killed fifteen soldiers and a captain and injured over sixty as a troop train collided with a freight train. The king visited the hospital and aid was organized by local authorities.
Memphis report on Mississippi second Democratic primary shows James K. Vardaman ahead of Judge Critz but without a majority. Interior county returns awaited could swing the result, with totals likely below the first primary. Indications point to a close contest and possible majority change from late counts.
Lawrence Aug 28 Timothy J Daly was elected assistant clerk of the board of overseers of the poor on the 10th ballot at a meeting yesterday afternoon. The election settles the case that had dragged since June. A temporary clerk was appointed with civil service approval. Assistant Clerk McEneany withdrew after being told to stop payments by the civil service commission. Daly had passed the civil service exam and was elected without friction among the overseers.
The Olympia, flagship of Rear Admiral Coghlan, ran aground for 45 minutes in Lucke's Sound near Harpswell during maneuvers. A board of inquiry found bottom damage and leakage but no officers were found at fault. the ship refloated with the tide and resumed drills after repairs and pumping.
In Chicago on August 28 Judge Wheatley and a jury ordered Mrs Anna Olovitch aged 50 and her daughter Ada aged 20 from the detained hospital to be committed to the insane asylum. They share a fear of unknown enemies and believe a mysterious powder aims to suffocate them through holes and crevices. Ada was born in England. their father is deceased.
New York August 28. The Medal of Honor Legion executive committee has chosen Gettysburg as the reunion site for this year with events planned for October 12 and 13.
In Suffolk street court four Greeks were fined three dollars each for obstructing the sidewalk and dancing on Thursday night. Edward Donohoe faced larceny charges for boot theft, found guilty after evidence linked to his son John, and jailed for six months. Two drink offenses were recorded as well.
John Boyle 37 suffered a nasal fracture at Spalding & Swett shoe factory on Rock and Willie streets and was taken to the Emergency hospital after the injury occurred while adjusting a belt. Dennis Maher of 171 Suffolk street injured his right hand at J P Quinn's woodyard on Gorham street and was also treated at the Emergency hospital.

Cleveland date Aug 28 Mrs Alexander Winton wife of Winton Automobile Company president killed herself by leaping into the lake after a period of ill health. Her body was recovered from the water after she disappeared from her bed early this morning while nurse was away.
