The day features M D Whitman former champion versus R P Huntington of New York while H L Doherty meets L E Ware of Boston. Rumors swirl that Whitman may retire the title if he wins and the Dohertys could default.

Nahant August 25 An immense crowd is expected to hear President Roosevelt address the public library today in Nahant before moving to Lynn and then Boston. The president, rested and refreshed by New England air, noted the strong goodwill toward both himself and Senator Lodge. He will be met by Mayor Shepard at the Nahant Lynn line and escorted through Lynn before taking the 4:49 p.m. train to Boston.
The Trades and Labor council committee met to organize Labor Day events naming Chief Marshal Frank J. Simonds and staff roles. Divisions cover local unions, federal unions, building trades, out of town unions, and merchant floats with floats planned by Granite Cutters. Prizes total 88 dollars across best feature, appearance, and mottoes.

Hazleton Pennsylvania August 25 police man August Sheach aged 66 special officer for Lehigh Valley Coal was stabbed and beaten while rescuing his son William Sheuch from a mob of about 3000 strikers gathered to halt a partial resumption of operations at No 40 colliery. William escaped with most non union workers transported to the mine by special train.
Boston August 25 The Cramp built battleship Maine the first of a new class did not meet expected speed in a trial run off Cape Ann Captain Train reported uncorrected mean speed 17.96 knots with tidal adjustments possible to raise or lower the figure The four hour run showed 18 knots as a possible threshold but not clearly attained despite a later leg at about 18.9 knots The ship faced head seas and a light gale with notable guests including Gov Hill of Maine and several congressmen The vessel will be commissioned in a few months and will receive a silver service from Maine
Pottsville Pa Aug 25 George Wheatley an outside foreman at Brookside colliery of Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron company is under 1000 bail charged with shooting Geo Seavar aged 19 of West City Wheatley says he was followed through streets by a crowd of strikers and sympathizers who jeered him Becoming enraged he drew a revolver and fired into the crowd The bullet struck Seavar in the leg Wheatley has been a miner for years
Inspector Walsh arrested Alvin G. Davis on a Fitchburg warrant for concealing mortgaged property valued at $200. The arrest occurred on Middlesex Street and Davis will be taken to Fitchburg Police Court to answer the charge.
General Gobin meets coal mine operators and miners in Shenandoah Pennsylvania as the strike drags on. Operators show tentative willingness to concede if a way is found to do so without harming their position. Gobin continues daily rides with his staff, urging a conservative settlement while maintaining good relations.
Lynn August 25 pickpockets struck as crowds gathered for President Roosevelt’s train. Victims across Central square and Mt. Vernon street reported losses from 10 to 100 dollars, with a diamond shirt stud valued at 100 dollars also stolen. Police were on duty but could not prevent the thefts.
James Cahill died yesterday morning at seven from pneumonia. A member of the Fenians band that attacked the prison yard where Sgt. Brett was killed at Manchester, England. Cahill born in Manchester in 1841 came to Lawrence about 1867 and lived here since. Survived by a wife four sons and two daughters.
Ellen Ashworth of 212 State Street New Bedford Massachusetts says she was run down and treated by nine doctors without help. Her stomach pain and heart trouble improved after using Father John’s Medicine, which she praises as the best remedy for consumption throat and lung troubles and all run down conditions. It is not a patent medicine and contains no poisonous drugs.
A crowded police court heard multiple cases Monday with Frederick Lister pleading guilty to burglary in North Chelmsford and being bound over for the grand jury. Michael Quinn faced larceny charges and possible future actions. Dozens of Poles, many drunk, required an interpreter, with fines from two to five dollars and several suspended sentences. A Davidson Street wedding was cited as the source of arrests.
Miss Vinnie Tucker of Dechard fell over a cliff on a mountain trip at Forest Point Mont Eagle Tennessee. Sidney Cowan of Nashville sprang to her aid catching her as they slid down the incline 35 or 40 feet before stopping three feet from a 300 foot drop. Cowan was shaken but conscious clinging to a bush while rescuers reached them. Tucker lay senseless and bleeding.
Battle Abbey in Sussex has been leased for years to Michael P Grace brother of former New York mayor William R Grace. Grace plans to use it as a winter residence joining his Hertfordshire estate as a second winter home. The abbey, once owned by the late Duchess of Cleveland and tied to Lord Rosebery, was sold at auction last autumn to Sir Augustus Webster.
The abbey was purchased from the sixth Viscount Montague in 1719 and remained in his family for 130 years. The price measured about 1 million dollars in today’s equivalent value.
Milford New Hampshire August 24 John Romain is under arrest for attacking Louis Calderara with a knife causing a deep cut near the jugular. Romain has two chest wounds and both men lie in bed under medical care after the knife fight attended by a physician.
