Arthur Hazen, 45, East Cambridge, arrested for felonious assault on his 11 year old stepdaughter. Clarence B Kendall, 20, of Gardner, injured after attempting to board a freight train. arm amputated, skull fractures.
Astronomers note only 18 first magnitude stars exist and their light requires about three years to reach Earth. There are fifty five stars of second magnitude known.

It provides safety deposit boxes private rooms and savings with 4 percent per annum compounded semi annually. Banking hours 8 to 4 and 7 to 9 evenings. Pittsburg August 23 steel strike shows no material change with non union mills hiring similar numbers as yesterday. Preparations to start other mills proceed. A high level meeting in Chicago involving Shaffer Mitchell Sargeant White and Easley aims to devise ways to aid steel strikers.
Officer Carley was attacked by prisoner Daniel Leary with a long iron-hooked pole during a struggle at the house of correction. Leary, who received five scalp wounds, vowed to kill Carley and two other officers. he is indicted for last month’s murder of Warden Fuller after striking him with a maul.
James W. Lyall of New York inventor of the positive motion loom, which aided cotton goods manufacture, was found dead at his home. Gas was on. family says he fainted, struck the gas jet, and fell into the tub. He was reported wealthy and not to have taken his own life.
In Constantinople on August 23 the French ambassador M. Constans sent a personal ultimatum to the Sultan, warning that he will depart with his staff unless the outstanding issues are settled immediately. The demands were presented in the brief ultimatum.
Lord Kitchener reports Col Williams after a sharp fight on the 19th captured an entire Boer convoy near Klerksdorp Transvaal. Eighty six wagons loaded with ammunition and supplies and much stock were seized. Eighteen prisoners were taken including the leader of Bloemfoof and a telegrapher with a complete wire tapping outfit.
Boston on August 23 welcomed 18 athletes from Oxford and Cambridge universities. The contenders are to compete against Canadians in Montreal and later with Harvard and Yale in New York. They arrived aboard the Commonwealth and were greeted by Harvard representatives.
A mob gathered at a mill this morning attacking non-union girls who entered the building. Stones were thrown and the crowd now surrounds the mill threatening forcible entry and removal of the workers from the looms. Serious trouble is anticipated before night.
Rev Edward Bell pastor of New Canaan Baptist church is jailed in Bridgeport’s county jail, charged with slander against Judge G D Nichols. Parishioner Deacon Erastus Tuttle failed to qualify as surety after transferring his property to his wife, who refused to help. Bell defends himself, claiming no such remarks were made as Nichols alleges.
A three year old girl named Anna Heath drowned herself at the Albany shore of the Hudson after her mother refused to let her play with colored children. Eyewitnesses say she walked into the river deliberately. boats searched, but she could not be saved. Her body later surfaced and was taken to her home after coroner’s exam.
Washington New Jersey papers found among Reverend George B. Harringtons effects show he was about 600 in debt. Worries over debt likely contributed to his suicide in the church bell tower at Oxford. Part of the money was owed to Drew Seminary in Madison.
A Galatz despatch reports 20 Russian torpedo boats and several despatch boats reaching the Dniester Delta. Russian troops begin mobilization along the Turkish frontier, signaling rising tensions on the front.
George W. Jackson, 27, a brakeman on the Consolidated local freight between New Bedford and Mansfield, fell from the top of a car at the upper Weir street crossing in Taunton. He died hours later at Morton hospital. He leaves a widow and three children.

A south bound freight from Manchester reached the Western avenue yard last night when four men who joined at Manchester argued with the crew and one fired several shots. A brakeman alerted Officer Dooley and one suspect, Dennis O Connell, was found drunk aboard a bumper. He was jailed for drunkenness. other three escaped and were not yet arrested. Police expect to question them.
Massachusetts state police officers Rhoades and Proctor arrived at Matane Quebec to aid the hunt for Joseph Wilfred Blondin. Reports place Blondin in the woods around Ste. Felicite as he travels toward Gaspe, with sightings at Leggett's Point and several farmhouses. Residents describe a ragged, weary man. investigators plan to press deeper into Ste. Felicite for clues.
Chief Wade expects definite information soon on the mysterious figure Joseph Wilfred Blondin, sought by officers who have been close to Matane Quebec for weeks. Catcher Coveney appeared at the police court seeking a warrant for Manager Fred Lake on the charge of assaults and battery. The request was refused due to lack of witnesses. The incident stems from a Thursday ball game mix up when Coveney, running home from third on a hit to right field, tried to force the ball from Lake’s hand as Cassidy threw it to him.
Coveney intended to punch him, and Coveney asserts that Lake struck him. No damage was done.
Visitors to national conventions praised Miss Kate Lunden and the sisterhood. she announced her marriage to Mr. John C. Sunderlin on June 27, 1901, in Flemington New Jersey. The ceremony was witnessed by immediate relatives and a few friends including Mrs. Emma Bourne, state president of New Jersey W C T U. After a wedding journey they will reside in Flemington.

Methuen assessors announced the tax rate for the year, setting it at $18.50 per $1000, the highest in town history, marking a $2 increase from last year.

Five year old Alfred Lessard fell from a window on Gorham Street yesterday afternoon. He struck his head on the concrete walk and needed three stitches to close the wound.

Other defendants included Mary Harrington, ordered on probation for five months with a possible seven months jail sentence. Bernard Gannon, fined $3 for drunkenness and battery claim. Francis McGaughey and Joseph Jacobs, each fined $7 for stealing hammocks. John Sullivan placed on probation for two months after lacking $6. Bridget Holland jailed one month with two months suspended. Dennis O'Connell pleaded guilty to drunkenness with a $2 fine and found a letter from Ottawa. James H. Duffy and James Mahoney fined $2 each for drunkenness. Patrick O'Keefe defaulted. Patrick McLean to be tried later for illegally keeping liquor on Chapel street.
