Lebanon Ky Aug 23 an unsuccessful effort to lynch Dan Hotten and Charles Shipp, jailed on murder charges, occurred early today at the Marion county jail. The incident underscores tensions surrounding the case as authorities secure the prisoners.
Patrick McLean was found guilty of illegally keeping liquor in police court Friday afternoon and fined 50 dollars on appeal. Thomas F. Foley and Edward Murray, arrested as suspicious characters after a B M freight train shooting, were discharged for lack of evidence.

Mont Vernon New Hampshire August 24 Royce and Henry Stuckler reach the old home week championship golf tourney final with strong semi final showings. Royce beat Stratton 3 up 1 to play and H Stucklen defeated Caldwell 4 up 2 to play. Marshall edged Wight 7 up 5 to Bancroft beat Begeley 6 up 4 to Wifth Prize Ed Bates won 4 up 3 to Trow defeated Colburn 8 up 6 to Sixth Prize Allen defeated Young 6 up 4 to play. A Stucklen beat Guerineau 2 up 1 to play.

A severe thunder, lightning, and rain storm swept the Oranges yesterday afternoon lasting nearly three hours. The Big Seven tendered a complimentary social to friends at Varnum's Landing Friday evening with about 300 attendees, many from Lawrence. A literary and musical programme featured songs by Dalton and Shea of Lowell and Bartrow and Daly of Lawrence, and recitations by John Paine and Otto Fritchie. Music was by the Big Seven orchestra under manager James Gookin, aided by John Simpson, John Crowe, John Cox, William Ryan, James McLaughlin, and Charles McGrail.
Lawrence reports Friday night that Franklin Woodman superintendent of the Haverhill division of the Lowell Lawrence and Haverhill Street railway has resigned to take the Ha verhill and Nashua Street railway superintendency, but the report is not verified.
The funeral for Samuel Jones was held this afternoon at the Edson cemetery chapel. Rev. J. F. Allen of Worthen Street Methodist church officiated. Bearers were Herd man, Carmen, Clees, and Taylor, fellow workers at the Bigelow Carpet company. C. M. Young oversaw burial arrangements.

Officials of the New York and New Haven rail road issue a rule forbidding baggage masters to check paper parcels of any description. Previously bundles and packages were checked like trunks and handbags but the new rule prohibits such checks by the railroad.
