Col Robert Knight of B B Knight plants and Col William Goddard of Lonsdale deny plans to reduce pay. Knight mills employ about 8 000 and run nearly 500 000 spindles. Some towns rely on mill operatives for prosperity.
Three hundred delegates from Massachusetts Connecticut Pennsylvania New York and New Jersey gathered in Binghamton New York to form the Five States Milk Producers association. They aim to secure a higher milk price by uniting against large contractors in New York Philadelphia and Boston and to create independent cooperatives for consumer deliveries. Boston dispatch says Mutual Mercantile Agency of New York announced today that a receiver will be appointed soon. The company, capitalized at two million dollars with branches in many cities, operates as a financial concern. In a separate item, eight year old William O Hearn of Roxbury drowned Tuesday after falling from the Swett street bridge into a South Bay arm while jumping on and off the railing with a companion.
Five men were drowned when a gas explosion in a tunnel leading from water works crib No 3 near Cleveland crushed the tunnel casing. Work on sinking the shaft had just finished and the men had begun tunneling this morning before a torrent of water halted escape.
Pittsburg August 21 reports the strike situation unchanged with no new workers out and no mills reopening. Local irritation rises at several points as the stalemate continues without new developments.
Sing Lee and George Mon once ran laundries on East Merrimack Street. Mon disappeared taking $35, triggering a police warrant. Sing recovered the money via friends and requested dismissal. the warrant was canceled.
James H Blake, a well known Nashua dry goods dealer, has sold his business to Lowell buyers due to ill health. Blake has been ill for several months and has not been in good condition since. The firm of J H Blake is a longtime local retailer.
American canoeist Hermann D. Murphy sailed the Uncle Sam for Thomas W. Lawson in three races with England's China canoe sweeping the contests. Murphy finished second in the first race seven minutes back, placed fourth in the second race two minutes behind the leader, and did not finish the third after capsizing near the first buoy in strong winds.
During a milk shortage in Lowell the Milkmen's Association discussed raising the price from five to six cents per quart. No action was taken as supplies returned and a winter price plan remains possible. In Manchester, New Hampshire the association is moving toward an immediate six cent per quart rise.
Newport R I August 21 cloudy skies failed to dampen enthusiasm for the championship final of the tournament. The match features tennis experts Wright and Larned with much excitement surrounding the final.
Francestown Academy in New Boston New Hampshire marked its hundredth anniversary with many graduates attending today's ceremony.
The Bar Harbor horse show opened on August 20 with dogs, poultry and horses competing. Notable horse winners included entries owned by Gen. Edward Morrell of Philadelphia.
Judge Pickman sent J Patrick J Holland to the workhouse for two months for drunkenness. J W McGtin chey to the state farm for an indefinite period on a similar charge. Charles McCarthy William M Lewis and William McDonald fined two dollars. Nellie L Howe to the workhouse for beer inclination. Assault charge against Charles Markarian dismissed. Thomas Sullivan and William Ford larceny cases continued to Friday. A few first offenders were released.
Hugh Armstrong of 7 Woodward Avenue Pawtucketville employed by Whittet and McDonald sustained a severe wrist laceration when a ladder slipped while lowering a paint can from a house. The can cut the wrist, five stitches were required at Emergency hospital.
Max Goldstein of Riter-Conley fell thirty five feet from a steg ing installation at the new fas ometer this morning and suffered a severe hip contusion. He was rushed to Emergency hospital for treatment.
Miss Fanny Reed was a guest at Mrs William Astor s dinner last Tuesday at Beechwood Newport.
Mayor Charles A. R. Dimon of Lowell urges department heads to spend remaining appropriations quickly to boost employment and local circulation. He notes underused sums for street and sewer work and asks for unity with the executive to carry out approved projects, accelerate bids, and employ workers this summer.
Albert Jackson a 19 Albion street Boston colored man attempted to clean out the entire street on Tuesday and began by beating his wife and throwing her out of a window. Louis Kolinsky neighbor assisting the wife was badly beaten and sent to a hospital by ambulance. Jackson is jailed on two charges of assault and battery.
