Victoria August 19 The steamer Islander flagship of Canadian Pacific navigation fleet struck an iceberg and sank with 65 dead. Many passengers escaped on improvised lumber rafts. Survivors report doors jammed in state rooms and some travellers tossed valuables overboard. Names and totals of victims and rescuers listed. committees formed for a Willow Dale parade and related events.
The Executive board of the Ladies' Shirt Waist union in New York unanimously approves a strike by about 4000 workers. Grievances cited include fines for tardiness and a 12 cent weekly charge for elevator use in the buildings.

Thieves entered the Mau rice W. Mulcahy bakery on Concord Street Sunday afternoon and helped themselves to pies cake and about 3 dollars in money. This marks a second break in the bakery within a short period.

An outing of the East End social club at Rafferty island ended in a double drowning. David Rafferty and Frank Judge, both 22, disappeared as strong currents and eel grass hindered rescues. Martin Worcester and George Roach barely survived while helping, and Herbert Swanson narrowly escaped. Police searched the river but bodies remained unrecovered at 6:30. Judge lived at 65 Union street, Rafferty at 75 Union street, both connected to Pemberton mills.

A. D. Puffer, a long time Lowell grocer and public figure, died suddenly at 81 at his home 62 Highland street. Neuralgia of the heart is suspected. Born Sudbury 1820, he moved to Lowell at age five and built a lifelong business on Middlesex and Branch streets. He served in the common council and state legislature and held roles in fire and banking groups. He survived by his wife Elizabeth Watson and three children Abbie, Grace, and Fred.
The Sunday Telegram reports belief that powerful influences may seek to defeat justice in the Urban Hall prize fight killing of John Dion, suggesting efforts to obstruct the case and undermine investigators.
Daniel Coakley, 231 years old, left home on Market Street about 12:15 PM and plunged into the Northern canal near Ford Street after weeks of illness and despondency. He was found submerged about an hour later and died. he leaves a wife and four children. His sister Mrs Morris Spillane and a brother in Ireland are noted as relatives.
Liquor officers conducted four seizures around the city yesterday. At 97 Adams Street they found four quarts of whiskey in a milk can in a rear room of Frank McMahon’s home, witnessed only by Mrs McMahon. Patrick McLean at 108 Chapel Street lost three cases of lager after a morning visit. John J. Foley at 145 Charles Street missed a milk can of whiskey. Benjamin Dienl in the Waiman block faced three quarts of whiskey and two quarts of wine. Seizure squad members included Supt. Moffatt and inspectors Gonawin Donaldson Ottisar Walsh Duncan and Bumps.
Police conducted Sunday raids on suspected bars in Lawrence as part of the crusade against illicit liquor. No liquor found in any location. Thomas Keller of Boylston station lies in Boston City Hospital after a Sunday Forest Hills square crash that fractured his skull. he remains on the dangerous list.
