Burlington Vermont August 15 Dr F8 8 Patenaude of Lowell Massachusetts a former Winooski resident and a man who claimed to be his brother faced charges of drunkenness in court yesterday. The pair said they came to the county jail Tuesday night “to look things over” and were allegedly very intoxicated during a scuffle with the sheriff who forcibly ejected them. Judge Hawkins ordered them jailed until they reveal where they obtained their liquor.
Four year old Alice Ryan of South Boston was killed after being struck by a wagon while playing in the street on Wednesday. The wagon driver James Kelley was detained and to be arraigned on a charge of manslaughter.
The Traders National Bank transacts general banking business. Offers foreign exchange in English French German and Swedish money. Provides safety deposit boxes private rooms. Pays 4 percent interest on savings compounded semi annually with monthly start. Has ladies banking rooms and serves as depository for U S and Massachusetts. Manila Aug 15 Second Lieutenant Walter S Grant of the Sixth Cavalry reports the capture near Taal Batangas of Col Martin Cabrera his adjutant and six insurgents Cabrera had led southern Batangas forces Col Panganiban with 20 men surrendered near Luzon did oath of allegiance Capt Policarpio a Malvar lieutenant and five men also surrendered none paid for rifles and Mindoro has no insurgents seen recently
Pittsburg August 15. No material change in the strike situation today. There are no moves by either side near Pittsburg and quiet persists at other centers. Officials of the Amalgamated are said to be considering plans to extend the strike to Western mills despite lodges' decision to stay at work. A secret conference is in progress at strikes headquarters. President Shaffer said at noon that the Amalgamated had submitted no proposition to the steel corporation and had received none from the corporation. He knew of no plan for settlement.
Harrisburg August 15. Democratic state convention nominates a ticket aligned with state issues only. No reference to Bryan free silver or imperialism. The platform condemns the last state Legislature as the most corrupt ever convened in the country.
The United Fruit Co vessel Ethelwold with bananas aboard ran ashore on Middle Breakers Baker's Island in a dense fog at 5 this morning. The propeller broke but the ship was otherwise unharmed and floated at high water. Capt. Thomas commanded the vessel from Puerto Plata Jamaica to Boston.
Buffalo N Y Aug 15 The League of American Wheelmen has elected officers for the coming year M M Belding New York president C H Van Hoon Chicago vice president Ab bott Bassett Boston secretary and treasurer.

Boston August 15 Harry Vardon features in a civil suit filed in the superior civil court against American Tobacco company with McGreenery Bros. Manning as trustees. Plaintiff James Shields Murphy editor of the Golf er claims breach of contract for promised ads valued at 1000 for a Vardon testimonial and 85 for each page from 14 other golfers, seeking 5000.
In Cataumet on August 15 Mrs. Irving F Gibbs died at home, completing a tragic sequence that claimed all four members of the Davis Gibbs family within six weeks. Earlier, Mrs. Davis died July 4 after a fall, daughter Mrs. Harry Gordon of Chicago died July 31, and Mr. Davis suffered a paralytic stroke last Friday, leaving only Mrs. Gibbs.
Baltimore August 14 Isidore Raynor attorney general of Maryland has been retained as one of the attorneys for Rear Admiral Schley in the court of inquiry hearing. He received a letter from Admiral Schley Sunday asking him to act and accepted. He said the case will be prepared in four weeks and covers nine days from Key West to Cienfuegos to the Yucatan passage for coal ships.
In Nashua New Hampshire on August 15 residents observe the gypsy moth outbreak. Isaac C Johnson warns natives that the pest has appeared in the maple trees along Mulberry street and anticipates action to exterminate the first arrivals to protect local trees.
In Detroit on August 14 the Catholic Order of Foresters held its annual convention and elected officers. Thomas Cannon of Chicago was chosen president and Thomas B Thiele of Chicago high secretary. Bishop Foley of Detroit gave the welcome address at the session opening.
A 17 year old Maurice Kennedy from Lawrence died at 8 Cedar street amid disputed claims of police involvement. A man was fatally hit by a train at New York New Haven and Hartford’s Back Bay station, his body mutilated, while Boston incidents included a man narrowly escaping a third rail injury on Washington street, and Sidney Shea of Somerville struck in the hand by a cartridge bullet at Shawmut avenue.

Two months in jail followed for David Maloney after a Lawrence street pocketbook theft from Michael Cohen. Judge Pickman suspended judgment for appeal, ruling no intent to steal at discovery. Maloney was held for the grand jury after appealing.
Labor notes report forty tackers left their jobs at the American Hide and Leather plant at 10 30 yesterday after two were discharged for refusing to tack dipped patent stock. They claim inability to meet piece work rates and asked for deficiency pay. A committee met with manager White but was ignored. Frank McCarthy of the Federation of Labor will arrive to intervene.
The Bricklayers union No 31 voted to call out all bricklayers working on catch basins and sewers, protesting Supt Brady for hiring stone pavers to lay bricks. About six workers will be affected as unionists seek to assert stance on Labor Day parade. A general order from Labor Day Chief Marshal Thos F Delehanty calls for full attendance at 8 pm Aug 16 1901 to ensure a red-letter gala day in Lowell.
Supt. Brady says he will ignore the strike and continue pavement work in Aiken street. He calls bricklaying ordinary street labor with no mortar, arguing there is no reason to employ bricklayers for this job versus unloading bricks.
Word arrived Wednesday night of the death of Frank Blyde at the Presidio in San Francisco from malaria. A about 20 year old YMCA member, he enlisted in 1900, served in cavalry with postings in New York Fort Leavenworth and San Francisco, and was to sail to Manila with the Sixth Cavalry. He is survived by his mother in this city.
Louis H. Kileski a prominent lawyer and former Republican city committee chairman vacationing at Point Allerton near Hull and Pemberton Nantasket line was struck by a trolley car Tuesday morning. He sustained serious bruises and shock but later reports from a physician said recovery was certain.
The feast of the Assumption was observed as a holy day of obligation with high church attendance. Hundreds participated in jubilee communions as the period continues through Sunday.
