The city advances repairs at the rifle range and an electric car sprinkler purchase, with preliminary steps required. Pittsburg August 12 The Char tiers rolling mill at Carnegie did not resume work with no employees reporting. National Tube works departments at McKeesport closed today the National Rolling mill with 2000 men Boston Iron Steel mill 500 and Monongahela Steel mill 400. Amalgamated association failed to make good threats to stop the upper and lower Union mills. they were operating with no opposition.
Boston Globe correspondent reports state officers Letteney and Dunham nearly caught the fugitive J W Blondin in a field near Matane Quebec on August 11. Vaillancourt identified the stranger as Blondin and said he earlier appeared at St Flavie July 16. A larger posse will renew the search tomorrow as officers stay alert near the Matane river and village.
In Pittsburg on August 12 the National Tin Plate mill at Monessen Pa began with a full complement of non union workers. Strike leaders after an all night session decided to abandon all opposition for the present. The Republic Painters Lindsay and McCutcheon mills of the National Tube Co were also closed.
In Wheeling West Virginia on August 12 the Riverside Plate mill of the National Tube Company was set to begin operation this morning yet no workers showed up.
The Shamrock towed by Lipton's yacht passed Sandy Hook at 6 30 this morning and anchored off Tompkinsville. A crew of 39 men, pleasant weather, and a smooth sea marked the voyage of 3769 miles with 14 days 10 hours actual running time. One mishap occurred as two topsail sheets were carried away in an August 4 gale.
Newport R I Aug 12 The wind NW six knots and cloudy sky. The triangular course used. The Constitution started 12 00 10 and led the Columbia by a quarter mile at 12 15. Yawls began at 12 10 with Navahoe Vigilant Rainbow Virginia starting times. The Ailsa was handicapped.
The Plant liner Halifax under Capt Pye from Charlottetown and Halifax struck the ledge off Minot's Light at five this morning in dense fog. Floated at flood tide and beached sinking. Four compartments full of water. Passengers are safe. Vessel now on Georges Island flats. Mails brought to city by officer.
Miss Nettie I. Ryan of 124 Moore Street remains missing though her mother obtained information about her whereabouts. Maud Ryan, her sister, reportedly received a letter stating the absentee's present address and requesting all letters be forwarded there. William Cushing of the Globe hotel is blamed by Mrs. Ryan for her daughter's absence.
Emperor William and other imperial party members have reached New Palace in Potsdam. King Edward and Queen Alexandra departed Homburg for Potsdam this morning as part of the royal visit.
An advertisement for Ayer's Hair Vigor promises to revitalize hair with color restoration if gray hairs appear. The claim is that the tonic feeds the hair and life returns, priced at $1, distributed by J C Ayer Co of Lowell Massachusetts.
The Oaklands grove welcomed about 6000 children for the annual day with 3500 tickets. They enjoyed lunch boxes ice cream swings and 120 swings while 27 guards supervised order and games. Prizes of toys were awarded in junior and senior races and relays as the mayor handed out the largest prize.
Buffalo Aug 12 Fred Wier Gibson 20 son of William Gibson of Williamsport Pa was shot and killed at Derby-on-the-Lake yesterday afternoon by a farmhand during revolver practice a bullet that went high struck him in the heart.
John A. MacPhail pleaded not guilty to arson in Lowell police court with bail set at 1000. He allegedly set fire to a Chelmsford street grocery to gain insurance proceeds. The case, with attorney John J. Hogan, was continued to August 20 before Judge Pickman.
Revered priest Rev Peter M Gagnon O M I died suddenly at the Oblates residence on Merrimack Street aged 84 after a brief illness marked by a cough. Born 1860 in L Assomption Quebec he served mostly in Lowell area including St Jean Baptiste church and Sacred Heart Moore Street. His death shocks English and French communities alike.
Worcester August 12 Mrs Frank H Leach 40 wife of a morning newspaper compositor died after a kerosene stove exploded. She tried to drop the burning stove outside but flames blew back and her clothing burned away. She remained conscious until admitted to St Vincent hospital where she died in the afternoon. She leaves a husband and a 16 year old daughter.
