Major Richard O. Greenleaf, Civil War veteran and Nashua Manufacturing bookkeeper, died from a lingering shock. Born January 31, 1826 in South Berwick Maine, he served in the 1st New Hampshire volunteers rising to major and was mustered out in 1864. He held positions with the Nashua board of trade and belonged to G A R Rising Sun Lodge and the Church of the Good Shepherd. survived by his widow.
Concord New Hampshire August 9 Charles L Gilmore ticket agent at the Boston and Maine passenger station has resigned. E L Goodwin his assistant will be promoted to the position and Charles Lane will take Goodwins former place. Gilmore has served 85 years at the station and 5 as Western Union superintendent. He retires with an exceptional record though impaired health ends his long tenure.
The body of a 55-year-old man was recovered from the Public Garden pond at 6 30 am by a Division 16 officer. He wore a black coat and vest, black trousers, black stockings, Congress shoes and a white straw hat. In his pockets were a razor a knife and 35 cents. No identification or letters were found and police suspect death by suicide with no signs of violence.
William Van Orsdall a hackman died from concussion after a runaway in New Haven on Friday. He was seized by a fainting spell and fell from the box to the toe board where his body dangled as frightened horses ran. The collision with another team caused his fatal injuries. He was about 65 and a Civil War veteran.
The Traders National Bank advertises foreign exchange, letters of credit, travelers cheques, and a general banking business. It offers safety deposit boxes with private rooms, a savings department at four percent, and monthly compounding. A ladies banking room is featured. Located at 30 to 46 Middlesex Street and 11 to 24 Post Office Avenue.
Pittsburg Aug 10 A general strike order from President Shaffer takes effect and workers are leaving to join strikers. Talks of settlement continue with appeals to Shaffer and Gompers, possible injunctions discussed but not filed. Shaffer heads to Newcastle and McKeesport event while Riverside iron works in Wheeling begins strike.
San Francisco on Aug 10 reports actor Lewis Morrison husband of Florence Roberts was attacked by footpads Thursday night. He suffered a broken nose, deep facial cuts, and multiple bruises. The assailants fled without stealing anything, leaving Morrison unconscious on the sidewalk before seeking help at Alcazar Theatre. Medical staff fear nerve shock may be serious.
Agent Knapp requests the State board compel the city to provide a contagious hospital. He cites a lack of suitable facilities for diphtheria and notes smallpox patients have no occupants avoidant to admit. Washington dispatch reports Chief Wilkie of the secret service receiving a telegram from San Francisco announcing the arrest of Walter Dimmick former chief clerk of the United States mint there On July fourth it was found that six sacks containing $30 000 were missing Dimmick was among four people known to have access to the vault.
San Francisco August 10. The Selby Smelting works bullion theft may be solved tonight as John Winters, a prisoner, confesses the treasure lies in shallow water near Casquintz Strait. A tug boat is scouring the area for recovery.
Boston August 10. Hon. Tilly Haynes, proprietor of the United States hotel in Boston and the Broadway Central in New York, died at 11.25 this morning from general breakdown of the system. He was 73 years old.
Commander Mei reports returning from an expedition and says he killed or dispersed hundreds of Boxers and brigands. Harvest prospects in Chili's southwestern districts and Honan province are reported as excellent.
A new partnership Knox Currier Frothingham begins operation in Boston. Partners include W. Knox of Lawrence now serving his third term in Congress. Guy W. Currier of Methuen a two term State Senator noted Democrat. Louis A. Frothingham of Boston Harvard educated, former Legislature member and Varsity football captain in 1898.

State detectives Dunham and Letteney lead guns in woods with Bailiff Joncas to capture him while locals fear and aid w the search. Reports describe a torn clothing stranger asking boat questions as two women and several locals corroborate.

A Massachusetts unit carried out hazardous scouting while officers grew more confident of capturing a man they have pursued for 10 days. William Doherty, identified by a grizzly white beard, was released this morning as he was arrested only to prevent further arrest up river as a suspect. He left on foot for Quebec, about 200 miles away.
Still missing is Nettie I Ryan whose July 31 disappearance from 124 Moore Street was first announced in the Courier. Her mother believes a man is involved and plans to hire a lawyer to compel disclosure. A reporter found the man denying knowledge, and Superintendent Moffatt had previously ordered him to reveal information.
In Suffolk probate court Elizabeth E. Harvey widow of Peter Harvey filed her will and codicil. It lists charitable bequests exceeding 40 thousand dollars to Episcopal institutions in Boston. She bequeaths portraits of Daniel Webster and Peter Harvey to the New Hampshire Historical Society with Webster letters and related papers.
Paris reports a second balloon is under construction for M. Santos-Dumont after yesterday’s burst damaged the previous envelope beyond repair. The new ellipsoidal design, similar in volume to the failed craft, is being built by M. La Chambre who made the Andre polar expedition balloon and aims for completion by September 1.
Maximilian Manasse, nephew of a former Berlin banker, killed himself at his Philadelphia boarding house after learning his uncle cut him from a will and left only $40. The clerk had anticipated a $40,000 bequest and had spoken of his uncle before the tragedy.

Edward Connelly a granite cutter died in Fitchburg hospital Friday morning from injuries after a fall on the stairs. He suffered a fracture at the base of the skull and is said to have a brother in Boston.
Bessie Ryan pleaded guilty to drunkenness and paid a $2 fine after bank books valued at about $5000 were seized. Peter Paris received a $2 fine for assault and battery on a boy. Judge Pickman noted anger from carelessness rather than malice. Other prisoners faced various sentences including workhouse terms and state farm parole, with multiple cases carried to next hearings.
At a directors meeting in Lowell last week Merrimack Manufacturing voted to transfer the selling agency of its mill products from Wheelwright Eldridge and Co to Lawrence and Co. Brown Bessie's progeny traces to the Hood Farm cow Brown Bessie, famed for the 90 and 30 days tests at Chicago world’s fair 1893.
